The Game
Currently in a four-way tie for first place in Big South North Division, the Liberty men’s
basketball team returns to action Saturday to host High Point. After the Panthers swept
the regular season meetings, last year, the Flames returned the favor with a 61-60 victory in the 2013 Big South Championship quarterfinals. Liberty looks to improve to 3-1 in
the conference standings with a third straight win, while the Panthers hope to build on an
83-75 win over Longwood. Game time for the 33rd meeting between the two squads is
slated for 7 p.m., with the contest airing live on the Liberty Flames Sports Network, MASN,
ESPN3 and the Big South Network.
“Andrew Jam” … He’s Heating Up! – Retro video game references aside, up until recently, Andrew Smith had not had consecutive double-figure scoring performances. The
junior now has three in a row, including a career-high 15 points against Campbell, Tuesday. Smith is averaging 13.0 ppg since beginning conference play, and is tied with Davon
Marshall as the Flames’ leader scorer during the three-game span.
He’s on Fire – Tomasz Gielo continues to establish himself as a consistent scorer for the
Flames, this season. In the last eight games, the Polish product has paced the Liberty
offense, averaging 13.8 ppg. Gielo also has averaged 6.4 rebounds per game during the
stretch, the second most of any Flame. The junior is coming off a 17-point, seven rebound
performance versus Campbell.
Boards! Boards! – JR Coronado is averaging 10.7 rebounds per game in conference
games, sitting third behind UNC Asheville’s D.J. Cunningham (11.7 rpg) and VMI’s D.J.
Convington (11.3 rpg). On the offensive glass, Coronado leads the way, averaging 5.7
boards, which includes 11 offensive rebounds at VMI.
Brotherly Milestone – John Caleb Sanders (1,233 points) needs three more points to
surpass older brother Jesse Sanders (1,235 points) for 15th on Liberty’s all-time scoring
list.

New Kids on the Block
Three new players join the Flames’ roster this season – Joe Retic, Ryan Kemrite and
Devon Pekas. Retic, a transfer from Owens Community College, averaged 11.3 points,
3.5 rebounds and a team-high 5.1 assists, last season. Look for the Indianapolis, Ind., native to see action at point guard and provide Liberty with solid defense.
Kemrite, a four-year letter winner for the SATCH Mavericks, averaged 22.6 points per
game, 7.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists as a senior. The home schooler also tallied 3,771
points during his high school career, leaving SATCH as its all-time leader in points scored,
three-pointers made and rebounds.
Pekas, a three-year letterwinner at Hawley High School in Hawley, Minn., averaged
19.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.4 blocks, and 2.7 steals per game his senior year.
Pekas was also a two-year captain, three-time all-conference selection and a member of
the Minnesota All-Star team.
Queens University of Charlotte Names Court in Honor of Layer
While Layer was in attendance with his former players from the 1989-90 Royals men’s
basketball team for a Queens University of Charlotte Hall of Fame induction ceremony,
(Nov. 1) the university unveiled a new name for the performance court at Curry Arena –
Dale Layer Court.
“To have the court named for me was almost surreal,” Layer said. “I’m very thankful
and humbled. It’s a special honor that I’m not sure I’m deserving of, but I’m very appreciative and thankful.”
In regards to the surprise, Layer added, “I didn’t know what was going to happen. My
parents and [Marquette head coach] Buzz Williams showed up unexpectedly. We had all
13 of our players come back, which was almost a miracle in itself. To have 25 years pass
and 13 players all willing and able to come back to Charlotte was a treat. I had the chance
to see a lot of people I spent a lot of years with.”
Layer, who was inducted into the Queens Hall of Fame in 2010 as an individual, is
credited with pioneering the men’s basketball program at Queens and helping the institution’s athletics department transition from an all-women’s department to a co-ed program.
At the helm of Queens men’s basketball, Layer posted winning records in eight of his nine
seasons, finishing with an all-time NCAA Division II record of 168-88 (.656).
Under the skipper’s guidance, the Royals captured two regular-season Carolinas Virginias Conference (CVC) Championships, three CVC Tournament titles and appeared in
the NCAA Division II Tournament twice (1996, 1998). During the Royals’ run in the 199596 campaign, Queens reached the Division II Sweet 16, finishing out the season with
25-6 posting. Layer’s players achieved a 100 percent graduation rate during his time at
Queens. While Layer served as director of athletics, Queens also earned its first Hawn
Cup, an all-sport conference award.
Senior Citizens
Liberty’s lineup contains an abundance of veteran leadership, featuring six seniors on
the squad – Antwan Burrus, JR Coronado, Davon Marshall, Casey Roberts, John Caleb
Sanders and Joel Vander Pol. Apart from Burrus, who was inactive last season, the group
accounted for 60 percent of the team’s scoring (1,497-of-2,489 points) and 54 percent of
rebounds (695-of-1,278 boards) in 2012-13.
Been there, done that, got the T-shirt ... Let’s do it again!
Liberty returns 12-of-14 players from its 2013 Big South Championship team, including nine players who were active along with Antwan Burrus, Ethan Layer and Wesley
Alcegaire (each redshirted 2012-13 season).
Layer Signs Five for 2014-15
Liberty head coach Dale Layer has announced the signing of five players for the 201415 academic year – Stavian Allen (F, 6-8, 195, Cary, N.C.), Braxton Bonds (G, 6-1, 170,
Nashville, Tenn.), Evan Maxwell, (C, 6-10, 240, Scranton, Pa.), A.C. Reid (G/F, 6-5, 190,
Spring Branch, Texas) and Ezra Talbert (F, 6-8, 190, Olathe, Kan.).

Notes from Liberty’s Big South Championship Run - March 5-10, 2013
First Round - March 5 - Liberty 78, Coastal Carolina 61
- Despite an early lead by Coastal Carolina, No. 5 North seed Liberty capitalized on the
Chanticleers’ 11:36 second-half field goal drought, which included a decisive 23-3 run, to
defeat the host team, 78-61, in the first round.
- The Flames’ tournament victory was their first since defeating Gardner-Webb in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Big South Championship, 88-77 (March 3, 2009). Liberty is now 4-0
all-time in postseason play against Coastal Carolina.
- Davon Marshall paced the Flames with a game-high 28 points, going 7-of-12 from the
field, including 5-of-7 from three-point land and 9-of-10 at the charity stripe. Marshall’s 28
points were the most by a Liberty player in the Big South Championship since Seth Curry
recorded 30 in the Flames’ 88-77 victory over Gardner-Webb in the 2009 quarterfinals.
- Tomasz Gielo added 14 points against Coastal Carolina, while John Caleb Sanders had
10 tallies.
- Liberty shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field, including 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from
the three-point arc. Coastal Carolina finished the night with 38.6 percent shooting (22-of57). The Liberty defense held the Chanticleers to a season-low 6.3 percent (1-of-16) from
three-point range.
Quarterfinals - March 7 - Liberty 61, High Point 60
- Looking for its first win against the Panthers after being swept in the regular season, the
Flames led by 17 at halftime before the Panthers answered in the second half.
- With Liberty up by one with 4.5 seconds remaining, High Point, who trailed the entire
game, had the final possession. However, the Panthers could not get the potential gamewinning shot off before the buzzer sounded, leading to a 61-60 Flames victory.
- Tavares Speaks led the Flames with 17 points, followed by Davon Marshall (16) and
John Caleb Sanders (12).
- Liberty shot 44.4 percent (20-of-45) from the field, while holding High Point to 33.3 percent (19-of-57). Head coach Dale Layer’s squad also won the rebounding battle, 37-30.
Semifinals - March 9 - Liberty 65, Gardner-Webb 62
- The Flames ended a nine-year streak without a finals appearance with the victory.
- John Caleb Sanders paced the Flames’ offense with 19 points, followed by Joel Vander
Pol (11) and Tavares Speaks (10). Vander Pol also collected seven boards to go with his
scoring effort off the bench.
- The Flames shot 46.8 percent (22-of-47) from the field, compared to 39.2 percent (20of-51) for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Dale Layer’s squad outscored Gardner-Webb in the paint,
26-8. Gardner-Webb made up for the difference from the three-point arc, going 10-of-26
from downtown. Liberty finished the night shooting 62.5 percent from three-point land (5of-8).
Championship Game - March 10 - Liberty 87, Charleston Southern 76
- The victory, which capped off a remarkable run of four wins in six days, marked Liberty’s
(15-20) third Big South championship in program history and the first since 2004.
- The Flames’ NCAA Tournament bid came after starting the season, 0-8. According to
STATS, Inc., since the 1996-97 season, three other teams have started the season 0-8 or
worse and made the NCAA Tournament – 2009-10 Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-11), 2007-08
Mississippi Valley State (0-8) and 1998-99 Florida A&M (0-10).
- With its record on the year, Liberty was just the second team in history to make the
tournament with 20-plus losses. The other was 2007-08 Coppin State (16-20 entering
tourney).
- John Caleb Sanders led all scorers with 27 points, tying his career high. The Sugar Land,
Texas native entered the NCAA Tournament needing eight more points to become the
23rd member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club.
- Davon Marshall followed with 20 points, going 6-of-7 from three-point range and 2-of-2 at
the foul line. The junior set a new Big South Championship record for most three-pointers
during the tournament, going 17-of-24 from beyond the arc during the Flames’ four wins.
- Tavares Speaks rounded out Liberty’s double digit scorers with 18 points, adding a career-high nine rebounds.
- Marshall was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Sanders and Speaks
and were named to the all-tournament team.
- Liberty shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) on the afternoon, including 9-of-18 (50.0 percent)
from three-point land. Charleston Southern concluded the contest with 41.7 percent shooting (25-of-60), going 9-of-28 (32.1 percent) from long distance.

Coach’s Comments
“Devon is a point guard from Minnesota. He understands the game and has great length.
He has the ability to make his teammates better and make open shots. I’m encouraged
by what he can give our team at both ends of the floor and I think he’s going to be a welcomed addition.”

Coach’s Comments
“Joe is a junior college transfer with a great feel for the game. He will have a chance to
earn minutes at the point position and can defend two or three different spots. He can
score it, pass it and defend his position very well. He’s a guy we’re counting on to make
a major contribution.”
