The Camels enter the meeting 2-0 in Big South action, with wins over Longwood (75-67) and High Point (74-71). Liberty has won the last three meetings with the Camels and holds a slight 11-10 edge in the all-time series. Tipoff for the 22nd installment is slated for 7 p.m. with the contest airing live on the Liberty Flames Sports Network, MASN, ESPN3 and the Big South Network. Venezuelan Invasion – JR Coronado’s 20-point performance at VMI was the fourth double-digit scoring performance of his Liberty career and first this season. Prior to Saturday, the last time the Caracas, Venezuela native finished with double-digit scoring figures was during Liberty’s BracketBusters game versus Austin Peay (Feb. 23, 2013). Saturday’s performance also marked the first time Coronado has led the Flames in scoring outright. Coronado’s 13 rebounds were also a season-high and the most since grabbing a careerhigh and Liberty Vines Center record 18 boards in the game versus Austin Peay. Big Brother is Watching – John Caleb Sanders (1,223 points) needs 13 more points to surpass his older brother Jesse Sanders (1,235 points) for 15th on Liberty’s all-time scoring list. The younger Sanders’ chances are high in accomplishing the feat on Tuesday, as he has posted double-digit scoring figures in each of the last six games. Two for Drew – Andrew Smith is averaging 12 points in the last two games, marking the first time he has posted double-digit scoring figures in consecutive games.. In fact, Smith’s 25 points during the span matches his season total from his freshman year (2011-12 season). Liberty’s Probable Starters No. 1 11 12 32 33 Name Pos. Queens University of Charlotte Names Court in Honor of Layer While Layer was in attendance with his former players from the 1989-90 Royals men’s basketball team for a Queens University of Charlotte Hall of Fame induction ceremony, (Nov. 1) the university unveiled a new name for the performance court at Curry Arena – Dale Layer Court. “To have the court named for me was almost surreal,” Layer said. “I’m very thankful and humbled. It’s a special honor that I’m not sure I’m deserving of, but I’m very appreciative and thankful.” In regards to the surprise, Layer added, “I didn’t know what was going to happen. My parents and [Marquette head coach] Buzz Williams showed up unexpectedly. We had all 13 of our players come back, which was almost a miracle in itself. To have 25 years pass and 13 players all willing and able to come back to Charlotte was a treat. I had the chance to see a lot of people I spent a lot of years with.” Layer, who was inducted into the Queens Hall of Fame in 2010 as an individual, is credited with pioneering the men’s basketball program at Queens and helping the institution’s athletics department transition from an all-women’s department to a co-ed program. At the helm of Queens men’s basketball, Layer posted winning records in eight of his nine seasons, finishing with an all-time NCAA Division II record of 168-88 (.656). Under the skipper’s guidance, the Royals captured two regular-season Carolinas Virginias Conference (CVC) Championships, three CVC Tournament titles and appeared in the NCAA Division II Tournament twice (1996, 1998). During the Royals’ run in the 199596 campaign, Queens reached the Division II Sweet 16, finishing out the season with 25-6 posting. Layer’s players achieved a 100 percent graduation rate during his time at Queens. While Layer served as director of athletics, Queens also earned its first Hawn Cup, an all-sport conference award. Senior Citizens Liberty’s lineup contains an abundance of veteran leadership, featuring six seniors on the squad – Antwan Burrus, JR Coronado, Davon Marshall, Casey Roberts, John Caleb Sanders and Joel Vander Pol. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt ... Let’s do it again! Liberty returns 12-of-14 players from its 2013 Big South Championship team, including nine players who were active along with Antwan Burrus, Ethan Layer and Wesley Alcegaire (each redshirted 2012-13 season).
