The Game
Liberty (1-6, 0-0 Big South) completes a quick, two-game homestand Saturday at 2
p.m., when Commonwealth opponent Saint Paul’s (3-3, 0-1 CIAA) visits the Vines Center.
The Lady Flames and Lady Tigers will be meeting for the first time since Jan. 6, 1988,
even though their campuses are separated by only 107 miles.
What to Watch
Liberty is attempting to snap a five-game losing streak, which is the Lady Flames’ longest losing skid since a seven-game streak in December 2000. The Lady Flames are also
seeking their first-ever victory against Saint Paul’s. The Lady Tigers took a pair of twopoint decisions from Liberty during the 1987-88 campaign, in the teams’ only two headto-head meetings. Liberty will try to curtail the high-scoring Tatiana Ellis, who is averaging
25.8 ppg through the first six games of the season, including 44 points in the Lady Tigers’
season opener against Lincoln (Pa.) on Nov. 18.
Lady Flames On The Air
All Lady Flames basketball games may be heard LIVE on WWMC 90.9 FM “The
Light.” Jamie Hall, celebrating his 15th year of broadcasting Lady Flames basketball, will
once again be handling the courtside play-by-play duties for most road games. Josh Wood
will serve as the primary commentator for home contests and will provide color analysis on
the road.
Lady Flames On TV
For the sixth season in a row, the Flames Television Network (FTN) plans to broadcast
all 12 home women’s basketball games. FTN’s regular announcing team will consist of
Ray Jones on play-by-play and Jamie Hall on color.

Liberty head women’s basketball coach Carey Green, beginning his 10th season with
the Lady Flames, has instilled quite a winning tradition during his tenure at the institution.
His teams have averaged more than 23 victories per year during his time at Liberty, putting his name alongside the nation’s premier women’s basketball coaches.
Green has accumulated a 214-74 record on the Liberty bench, good for a winning
percentage of .743. He entered the season ranked 10th among active NCAA Division I
women’s basketball coaches in winning percentage, ahead of renowned coaching names
like Rutgers’ Vivian Stringer, LSU’s Van Chancellor and North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell.
More importantly, Liberty has won the Big South Tournament title and advanced to the
NCAA Tournament eight times with Green as head coach. Liberty has totaled 23 or more
victories during seven of those years, including the 2004-05 season, which saw the Lady
Flames reach the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.
Green has actually been to the postseason on 20 occasions as a women’s basketball
coach, a span which includes a dozen years as an assistant coach at Clemson. In all but
one of the 20 appearances, he has experienced the NCAA Tournament.
Last season, Green led the Lady Flames to one of the best seasons in program history. Liberty tied a school record for victories, finishing the year 28-4. Along the way, the
Lady Flames captured three tournament titles—the National City Xavier Invitational, the
UNLV Lady Rebel Christmas Classic and their eighth Big South Championship in Green’s
nine years as head coach. The latter championship earned Liberty a spot in the NCAA
Tournament for the 11th time. Green won his 200th career game, Jan. 19 at Charleston
Southern, and became the first four-time Big South Women’s Basketball Coach of the
Year in conference history.
Rebounding and defense have always been staples of Green-coached teams, and
the 2007-08 Lady Flames were no exception. Liberty outrebounded opponents by an average of 10.2 caroms per game, ranking fifth nationally. The Lady Flames have now been
listed among the nation’s top five teams in rebounding margin for five-straight years. Liberty led the nation in the category in 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Lady Flames also ended
the season ranked in the top 15 in the nation for field goal percentage defense (fourth) and
scoring defense (15th).
A key late-season conference victory over High Point in 2006 made Green the winningest coach in Big South Conference history. He is also Liberty’s career wins leader.
The record-setting victory was just one of the many reasons the 2004-05 year was a
special one on Liberty Mountain. A senior-laden Lady Flames team recorded upset wins
over No. 4 seed Penn State (78-70) and No. 5 seed DePaul (88-79) in the first two rounds
of the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the second team ever to advance to the Sweet
16 as a No. 13 seed. The Lady Flames ended the season with their highest national ranking to date, 21st (USA Today/ESPN).
Green’s track record shows he has the ability to meet strong challenges. The Lady
Flames have recorded two wins over UNLV, Virginia and West Virginia and solo victories
over No. 19 DePaul, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 25 Penn State and Wake Forest during
Green’s tenure. The upset victory over No. 25 Virginia in 2003 marked Liberty’s first win
over a Top 25 team.
His record against conference foes is equally impressive. He led the Lady Flames on
a Big South record 47-game winning streak and currently owns a .913 (136-13) winning
percentage against conference teams. Green has marched through conference play with
one or fewer setbacks six times, while guiding the Lady Flames to two undefeated conference seasons.

Scouting Saint Paul’s
The Saint Paul’s Lady Tigers were picked to finish third in the CIAA East Division, after
going 11-15 last season, including 6-12 in conference play. Saint Paul’s has opened the
2008-09 campaign with a 3-3 mark, but dropped its conference opener at home to Bowie
State on Nov. 25, 80-69.
The Lady Tigers are leading the CIAA in scoring, at 77.8 points per game. Leading
the Saint Paul’s offensive onslaught is Tatiana Ellis, a 5-9 junior guard. She opened the
year with a bang, tallying a career-high 44 points in a 97-67 victory over Lincoln (Pa.) and
garnering CIAA Player of the Week honors. Ellis, who already has four 20-point games to
her credit, leads the conference with 25.8 ppg.
Allukesha Guy, a 5-9 freshman guard, has enjoyed a stellar start to her collegiate
career. She is contributing 10.2 ppg and a team-high 5.5 rpg, through her first six games
with the Lady Tigers.

The Coaching Matchup
Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his 10th season with the Lady Flames, and has
led his team to eight Big South titles. A four-time Big South Coach of the Year, Green owns
a 214-74 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South
women’s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.743) ranked 10th among
active NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaches at the season’s outset.
Serena King-Coleman is 29-88 in her fifth season as the Saint Paul’s head women’s
basketball coach. The Lady Tigers have increased their victory total each season, under
her direction. King-Coleman also served one season (2003-04) as Gardner-Webb’s head
coach, tallying a 5-22 record at the helm of the Bulldogs.
Liberty-Saint Paul’s Series Notes
Saturday’s game will mark the third meeting between Liberty and Saint Paul’s in
women’s basketball, with the Lady Tigers taking both previous matchups. Saint Paul’s
won both ends of a home-and-home series with Liberty during the 1987-88 season, by a
combined four points.
Renee Jones was the top Saint Paul’s performer, as she posted 35 points and 11
rebounds during the Lady Tigers’ 81-79 triumph at Liberty Gym on Dec. 5, 1987. Jones
added 22 points and 14 caroms on Jan. 6, 1988 in Lawrenceville, sparking the Lady Tigers
to a slim, 82-80 win over the Lady Flames.
Head coach Mike Goad’s Lady Flames were paced by Annetta Paraham’s doubledouble (20 points, 12 rebounds) in the squads’ December meeting. During the teams’ second contest, Tracey Larose tossed in a game-high 27 points, while Pam Stanfield nabbed
a season-high 20 boards.
Liberty Versus the CIAA
Liberty is 4-6 all-time against the current CIAA members, but the Lady Flames are 4-0
versus CIAA opposition since joining the NCAA Division I ranks. Liberty has defeated Virginia Union in each of the past four seasons. The Lady Flames are also 0-1 versus Bowie
State, 0-2 versus Saint Paul’s and 0-3 versus Virginia State.

All-Time Record in December
The Lady Flames are 0-2 to open the month of December, after dropping a 64-53 decision to No. 13/14 Auburn on Sunday. Liberty is now 74-100 all-time during the calendar
year’s final month, including 30-31 under head coach Carey Green. The Lady Flames
have five more games scheduled this December.
Last season, the Lady Flames won five of six games in December, including a home
victory over James Madison and the UNLV Lady Rebel Christmas Classic title. Liberty’s
lone loss for the month came at No. 4 North Carolina.
Competing with the Commonwealth
Liberty is seeking its first win versus a Commonwealth opponent this season during
Saturday’s contest, after suffering setbacks to VCU (Nov. 14) and James Madison (Dec.
2). The Lady Flames also have a pair of games scheduled against Big South rival Radford
(Feb. 2 and March 6). Last season, Liberty went 7-2 against Commonwealth foes.
Going the Distance
During each of Liberty’s last three home games at the Vines Center, a Lady Flame has
played all 40 minutes. Megan Frazee never came off the floor during Liberty’s contests
against Radford (March 7) and VCU (Nov. 14), while Amber Mays played every second of
Sunday’s game against No. 13/14 Auburn.
A New, Familiar Face
Jessica Nelson just wrapped up a stellar volleyball career during Liberty’s first-round
NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship matchup with No. 4 Nebraska on Dec.
5. Now, she is set to make her collegiate hardwood debut for the Lady Flames, just eight
days later.
Nelson is the Lady Flames’ first two-sport athlete since 2005 graduate Stephanie
Walker, who also competed for the Liberty women’s track & field team.
Nelson is believed to be the first athlete to compete in both volleyball and women’s
hoops at Liberty since Theresa Bream, who played basketball for the Lady Flames in
1989-90, 1990-91 and 1992-93.
A-MAYS-ing Amber
Junior point guard Amber Mays was voted to the all-tournament team at the Nov. 2829 GW Thanksgiving Classic, after a pair of stellar performances for the Lady Flames in
the nation’s capital.
Mays opened her weekend with an eight-point, four-assist outing versus Hartford on
Nov. 28. She then came back with a career-high 14-point effort against South Alabama the
following day, sinking six of her seven field goal attempts.
Mays capped the weekend by celebrating her 20th birthday on Nov. 30.
Block Party
The Lady Flames rank third in the Big South with an average of 3.3 blocked shots per
game, through the first seven contests of the 2008-09 season. Leading the way are senior
Moriah Frazee and redshirt freshman Avery Warley, with seven rejections apiece, for a 1.0
bpg average. They are tied for third in the conference.
Four of Warley’s blocks came during Liberty’s 45-44 win over UC Riverside on Nov.
21, marking a new career-high. Only one Lady Flame blocked four shots during a game
last season, as Moriah Frazee turned away four Radford shot attempts on Feb. 6, 2008.
Halfway There?
Liberty had won 23 consecutive games when holding a halftime lead, until the Nov.
28-29 GW Thanksgiving Classic. The Lady Flames owned a small halftime advantage
over both Hartford and South Alabama, before losing both contests. After Auburn overcame a one-point halftime deficit to defeat Liberty on Sunday, the Lady Flames are only
1-3 when holding an advantage at halftime this season.
Liberty only lost once last season when leading at the intermission. The Lady Flames
owned a 10-point halftime edge at Virginia Tech on Nov. 19, 2007, before the Hokies
stormed back to win, 73-68.

Fabulous Freshmen
Freshman guard Brittany Campbell’s career-high 11 points against Hartford on Nov.
28 paced all players, making her the first freshman to lead Liberty in scoring since Moriah
Frazee had 11 points against DePaul in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament
(March 18, 2006).
Campbell earned her first career start on Dec. 2 at James Madison, sinking three
triples against the Dukes for nine total points. She was the first true freshman to start for
the Lady Flames since the 2005-06 season, when Alexandria Bream, Megan Frazee,
Moriah Frazee and Rebecca Lightfoot all started at least once.
Fellow freshman Kylee Beecher started for the first time on Dec. 7, versus No. 13/14
Auburn. Beecher corralled a game-high nine rebounds against the Tigers, pacing Liberty
in rebounds for the second time in her first seven collegiate appearances. Beecher also
recorded a team-high 10 boards versus South Alabama on Nov. 29.
Turning Up the Heat in the Furnace
The 2008-09 campaign is the 17th season the Liberty University women’s basketball
team has called the Vines Center its full-time home. Liberty’s first-ever contest at the
Vines Center was an 86-74 loss to East Tennessee State, on Dec. 7, 1990, but the “Furnace” has served as a favorable venue for the Lady Flames over the years. Liberty is 17851 (.777) all-time at the Vines Center, including 13-0 last season. The Lady Flames, 0-2
at the Vines Center in 2008-09, have 12 home games scheduled this season. Liberty has
not lost three straight contests at the Vines Center since dropping four home decisions in
a row, between Jan. 20 and Feb. 3, 1996.
Liberty Versus Non-Conference Opposition
The Lady Flames are 1-6 to open the non-conference portion of their 2008-09 slate.
Liberty is 261-291 all-time in non-conference outings.
Last season, Liberty went 15-3 versus non-conference opponents. The Lady Flames
won all six of their non-conference home games in 2007-08.
Liberty’s best-ever season against non-conference foes came in 1997-98, when the
Lady Flames went 14-1 outside the Big South. Liberty’s non-conference setback that season came to national champion Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
A Seasoned Bunch
Head coach Carey Green has the rare luxury of featuring six seniors on this season’s
roster--Alexandria Bream, Megan Frazee, Molly Frazee, Moriah Frazee, Rachel Hammond and Rebecca Lightfoot. The seniors have all started at least once during their career
at Liberty, combining for 238 career starts.
The last time Liberty had six seniors was during the 1997-98 season. That year, Lisa
Bateman, Erma Jackson, Mari Kong, Tiffany Ratcliff, Erin Wall and Flori Willie helped the
Lady Flames record the only undefeated regular-season in program history. Liberty ended
the year at 28-1, losing only to national champion Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament.
Tournament Time
Liberty could play as many as 10 tournament contests in 2008-09. The Lady Flames
already competed in the Preseason WNIT and GW Thanksgiving Classic. They are still
scheduled to participate in the Hokie Hardwood Classic (Dec. 29-30) and the Big South
Women’s Basketball Championship (March 13-15).
Liberty’s Dec. 2 game against James Madison was Liberty’s first non-tournament contest of the year, after the Lady Flames opened up the 2008-09 campaign by going 1-4 in
the Preseason WNIT and GW Thanksgiving Classic.
Dial Three Digits for Long Distance
The Lady Flames have been able to continue a long-standing streak, so far this season. The Lady Flames have made at least one three-pointer in a school-record 110 straight
games, a run which began on Feb. 26, 2005. None of the current Lady Flames were in
college when the streak began.
Freshman Danika Dale kept the streak alive on Sunday versus Auburn, sinking the
first two three-pointers of her collegiate career during the second half.

Longest-Tenured Assistant Coaches
The 2008-09 season is Heather Stephens’ sixth campaign as an assistant on Carey
Green’s coaching staff. She is now tied with Jeri (Wiley) Porter as the longest-tenured
assistant coach in Liberty women’s basketball history. Porter is now the head coach at
George Mason. The Lady Flames have gone 124-42 and won four Big South titles during
Stephens’ tenure and made the “Sweet 16” of the 2005 NCAA Tournament.

Lady Flames Excel in the Classroom
Liberty has received national recognition numerous times for its work in the classroom. Last season, the Lady Flames tallied a 3.354 GPA, ranking 14th in the Women’s
Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Team Honor Roll.
It was the third straight season and the fifth time in program history that Liberty has
been included in the Top 25 Team Honor Roll. The Lady Flames were listed a programbest seventh in 2006-07 and tied for 14th in 2005-06. Liberty was rated 13th in 1999-2000,
which was Carey Green’s first season as head coach, and came in 12th during the 199899 campaign.
Liberty was one of only three teams to be included in last season’s WBCA Top 25
Honor Roll and play in the NCAA Tournament, joining Kansas State and New Mexico.

Start Me Up
Head coach Carey Green used only four different starting lineups in Liberty’s 32
games last season. The most common starting five consisted of Allyson Fasnacht, Courtney Watkins, Megan Frazee, Rebecca Lightfoot and Moriah Frazee. The unit went 18-2 in
their 20 games as a starting unit.
The Lady Flames’ most successful grouping, which won all six games in 2007-08,
featured Fasnacht, Watkins, Megan Frazee, Molly Frazee and Moriah Frazee.
This year, Liberty has already used four different starting lineups in the first seven
games of the season. Their most successful lineup--Rachel McLeod, Rachel Hammond,
Megan Frazee, Moriah Frazee and Avery Warley--has gone 1-1.
Counting Up the Votes
Liberty was listed among the “Others Receiving Votes” in the Nov. 25 ESPN/USA
Today Coaches Top 25 poll, for the third straight week, receiving one vote.
Last season, the Lady Flames regularly received votes in both national polls, but did
not quite crack the Top 25. Liberty’s most recent Top 25 ranking came in the final ESPN/
USA Today Coaches poll of the 2004-05 season. The Lady Flames were listed No. 21,
after reaching the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament.
2008-09 Opponents in the National Rankings
Two of Liberty’s 2008-09 opponents appear in the current Top 25 polls. Auburn is listed No. 11 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 poll and No. 13 in the AP Top 25 poll,
while fellow SEC member Vanderbilt is ranked No. 19 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches
poll and No. 20 by the AP.
Two other opponents are receiving votes in the national polls, as Hartford and North
Carolina A&T are both listed in the “Others Receiving Votes” section of the ESPN/USA
Today Coaches Top 25 poll.
Bombs Away
After making only six three-pointers during the season’s first five games, Liberty exploded for eight triples at James Madison on Dec. 2. Starting guards Brittany Campbell
and Rachel Hammond connected on a trio of three-pointers each, while senior forward
Moriah Frazee hit two trifectas for the first time in her career. She only made one threepointer during the entire 2007-08 campaign.
Lack of Overtime
Liberty has played only one overtime game in its last 153 outings, a 64-62 setback at
High Point on Jan. 20, 2007.
The Lady Flames’ most recent overtime victory came on Jan. 6, 2004, when Liberty
defeated American, 76-72, on the road in double overtime. No current Lady Flame has
won an overtime contest in college.
Liberty’s most recent overtime contest at the Vines Center was a memorable one. The
Lady Flames defeated Virginia, 77-69, in overtime on Nov. 26, 2002, to claim their firstever win over the Cavaliers. It also marked Liberty’s first win over a ranked opponent, as
Virginia entered the game with a No. 25 national ranking.
Double the Fun
Megan Frazee’s 28 points and 11 rebounds versus VCU on Nov. 14 gave the senior
37 career double-doubles, ranking second on the Lady Flames’ career list during the
NCAA Division I era. Katie Feenstra, now of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, owns the program Division I record with 49 double-doubles.
Frazee’s fellow seniors, Moriah Frazee and Rebecca Lightfoot, have crafted one double-double apiece during their time at Liberty.
The Container is Half Full
The Lady Flames went 9-0 last season when shooting 50 percent or higher. Liberty is
now 49-0 in such contests under head coach Carey Green.

Big South Preseason Favorites
The Lady Flames were tabbed an overwhelming favorite to repeat as Big South Conference champions in the preseason coaches and media poll. Liberty claimed 17 of 19
first-place votes and earned 169 total points. Winthrop was second with 143 points.
Individually, Megan Frazee was voted Big South Preseason Player of the Year for the
third season in a row. Sister Moriah Frazee joined her on the preseason all-conference
roster.

Triple the Trouble
Liberty sports the only set of triplets currently playing for the same NCAA Division I
women’s basketball team--seniors Megan, Molly and Moriah Frazee. Last season, the
Frazees averaged 37.6 points and 19.0 rebounds per outing, good for 52.5 percent of the
Lady Flames’ total scoring output and 44.8 percent of the team’s boards. Collectively, the
Frazee triplets have totaled 2,908 career points and 1,532 career rebounds.
Megan, Molly and Moriah Frazee started together six times last season and have
done so 14 times in their career. One of the Frazees led the Lady Flames in scoring in 30
out of 32 games during the 2007-08 campaign.
Miss Consistency
Megan Frazee has scored in double figures in each of her last 46 games, dating back
to Jan. 27, 2007. It is the longest such streak of her career and the longest by a Liberty
player since Elena Kisseleva tallied 10 or more points in 62 straight contests, spanning the
1996-97, 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons.
Frazee has only scored nine or fewer points on four occasions at Liberty, and has
never done so in consecutive outings.
Clamping Down on Defense
The Lady Flames have held 58 consecutive opponents under 50 percent field goal
shooting. The last Liberty foe to sink more than half of its field goal attempts was Marist,
at the Maryland Terrapin Classic on Dec. 29, 2006.
Liberty is off to a good start defensively in 2008-09. Three of the Lady Flames’ first
seven opponents have shot below 40 percent from the floor. Liberty ranks fourth in the Big
South with a .380 opponents field goal percentage.
A Short Commute
Freshman guard Brittany Campbell attended high school literally right down the street
from Liberty University at Brookville High School. She is the first Lynchburg-area player to
suit up for the Lady Flames since Tekita Butler in the 2002-03 season.

International Flavor
The addition of Tokyo, Japan native Jessica Nelson to the Lady Flames’ roster gives
Liberty an international player for the 15th consecutive season. The last time the Lady
Flames’ roster consisted solely of American-born players was the 1993-94 campaign. Every Carey Green-coached team at Liberty has featured at least one international player.
An Outstanding Opener
Megan Frazee tallied a game-high 28 points against VCU on Nov. 14, marking the
most points she has ever scored in a season-opening game. It was also the most points
tallied by a Lady Flame in a season opener since Nov. 23, 1996, when freshman Elena
Kisseleva dropped 30 markers on Bluefield in an 89-45 Liberty victory at the Vines Center.
A Lucky 13
As a result of Megan Frazee’s big performance versus VCU, which also included a
game-high 11 rebounds, she was tabbed this season’s inaugural Big South Women’s
Basketball Player of the Week. It is the 13th time in Frazee’s career she has captured the
conference’s weekly honor.
Only former Liberty standout Katie Feenstra has collected more Big South Women’s
Basketball Player of the Week awards in conference history. Feenstra finished her Liberty
career with 15 weekly plaques.
Anything You Can Do ...
Last season, Megan Frazee became the 11th player in program history to score 1,000
career points, eclipsing the magical mark at North Carolina on Dec. 30, 2007. This year,
she could get some company from within her own family. Sister Moriah Frazee enters the
Saint Paul’s contest with 904 points, leaving her 96 shy of 1,000.
If Frazee scores at her current season average of 11.4 points per contest, she is due
to hit the milestone on Jan. 17, during the Lady Flames’ road game at Presbyterian.
Frazee is also climbing Liberty’s career rebounding chart. She currently ranks 21st in
program history with 489 boards, leaving her five behind Helen Gomes for the 20th spot.
The senior also needs 11 caroms to become the 20th player in Liberty history to nab 500
career rebounds.
The Frazees would not be the first sister duo to score over 1,000 points at Liberty.
Sharon and Sarah Wilkerson, who graduated in 2000, totaled 1,733 and 1,331 points,
respectively.
First Time Since Feenstra
Redshirt freshman Avery Warley established a pair of career highs during Liberty’s
Nov. 21 victory over UC Riverside, coming up with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. In
the process, she became the first Liberty to tally at least 10 rebounds and four blocks in
the same contest since the final game of Katie Feenstra’s brilliant Liberty career. The 6-8

No. 1 seed LSU in the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament, on March 26, 2005.
Finding a Way in the 40s
Remarkably, Liberty is 2-1 over the past two seasons, when scoring fewer than 50
points in a game. Most recently, the Lady Flames defeated UC Riverside by a 45-44
score, on Nov. 21. Last season, Liberty posted a 45-38 home triumph over Richmond on
Jan. 5, 2008.
Breakout Season
Senior guard Rachel Hammond is shining during her final season at Liberty. She
entered the year with career averages of 4.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest, but is
posting 8.1 points and 4.9 boards through the first six games of 2008-09. Hammond, who
is also tied for ninth in the Big South with 1.6 steals per outing, has set career highs in
points twice in the last five games, scoring 15 points at Western Carolina (Nov. 22) and
tossing in 17 markers at James Madison (Dec. 2).

Liberty battled back from a 21-4 deficit in
its season opener to take a pair of secondhalf leads. However, visiting VCU edged
the Lady Flames, 59-57, in a first-round
Preseason WNIT contest, as Radoslava
Bachvarova drained three free throws with
just 2.1 seconds left. VCU tallied the evening’s first 12 points, before Megan Frazee
canned a one-handed floater from six feet,
at the 14:10 mark of the opening half. The
Rams later notched nine straight points,
bolstering their advantage to 21-4 at 10:48.
Liberty limited VCU to one field goal over the
final 4:20 of the opening stanza, running off
an 11-2 surge in the meantime and closing
the gap to 31-27 at the intermission. Megan
Frazee finally gave Liberty its initial lead of
the contest, 45-44, draining a three-pointer
from the right wing at the 11:02 mark. The
Lady Flames’ next lead did not come until
4:30 remained on the game clock, when Megan Frazee found Avery Warley for an open
layup. Warley’s basket was part of a 7-0
Liberty burst. Megan Frazee’s reverse layup
at 3:11 capped the run, increasing the Lady
Flames’ lead to 54-51. VCU came back to tie
things up again, 54-54, when Quanitra Hollingsworth split a pair of free throws with 2:18
remaining, setting the stage for a frenetic final minute of play. Mays put Liberty on top,
56-54, with a driving layup at the 44-second
mark, before Hollingsworth answered with a
hoop from in close, 10 seconds later. Warley went to the free throw line on the Lady
Flames’ ensuing possession, splitting a pair
of free throws with 6.4 seconds remaining.
Her connection briefly put Liberty in front,
57-56, before Bachvarova’s clutch charity
tosses for the Rams.

Megan Frazee banked in a layup from the
left side of the lane as the buzzer sounded,
giving the Lady Flames a thrilling, 45-44 win
over UC Riverside in a Preseason WNIT
consolation contest at the Ramsey Center in
Cullowhee, N.C. The Highlanders had taken
a 44-43 advantage with just 3.3 seconds left,
when Alyssa Morris made a tightly-contested
three-pointer from the right wing. Her hoop
capped a 9-0 UC Riverside surge, consisting
solely of triples. UC Riverside appeared to
seal its first victory of the year, when Roney
Friend intercepted Liberty’s inbounds pass
with 0.9 ticks remaining. However, Friend
shuffled her feet, giving the Lady Flames
one final opportunity, with the ball out of
bounds under the basket. Rachel Hammond
bounced the inbounds pass to a cutting
Frazee, who calmly sank the game-winning
shot from close range. Liberty notched the
evening’s first seven points, keeping the
Highlanders off the scoreboard for the first
5:29 of play. The game was deadlocked at
15 apiece, before the Highlanders suffered
another extended scoring drought. Liberty
kept UC Riverside scoreless for 4:19, reeling
off seven consecutive points in the meantime. Amber Mays split a pair of free throws
2:25 before halftime, giving the Lady Flames
a 22-15 edge. Liberty led 22-17 at the intermission. It was UC Riverside which opened
the second half on a roll. The Highlanders
recorded the first nine points of the stanza.
Tainoisouti Lott’s layup at the 15:53 mark
increased UC Riverside’s first advantage of
the contest to 26-22. Four straight tallies by
Friend boosted the Highlanders to their largest lead , 32-26, with 12:26 showing on the
second-half clock. Liberty later went back on
top with a 13-0 run between UC Riverside
hoops. Mays’ pair of free throws made the
score 43-35, Liberty, with 4:10 remaining.

The Western Carolina Catamounts fashioned a 16-0 run, spanning the first and
second halves, boosting them to a 73-53
victory over Liberty, Saturday evening at the
Ramsey Center. The triumph gave Western
Carolina the championship of this four-team
Preseason WNIT consolation bracket. Both
teams got off to a slow start at the offensive
end. When the buzzer sounded for the contest’s first media timeout at 14:42, the homestanding Catamounts owned a 5-2 advantage. Liberty did not get on the scoreboard
until the 15:30 mark, when Hammond sank
a layup. Western Carolina’s edge bulged to
six points, 16-10, after Brooke Johnson’s
layup 9:54 before the half. The Lady Flames
then knotted the game at 16-16 with six consecutive markers. A Brittany Campbell threepointer from the right corner, marking her
first collegiate points, evened the score at
7:58. However, Liberty only made one more
basket during the remainder of the opening
stanza, Moriah Frazee’s first triple of the
season. The Catamounts closed the half on
an 8-0 surge, taking a 30-19 advantage into
the locker room. The Catamounts notched
the first eight tallies of the second half, including a pair of three-pointers, extending
their overall run to 16-0 and their lead to
38-19. Liberty trimmed its deficit to 13 points,
42-29, with 14:15 remaining. Rachel Hammond contributed four points to the Lady
Flames’ 6-0 run. The red-clad Lady Flames
got to within 47-37 at 10:11, after another 6-0
surge, capped by consecutive Avery Warley
layups. Liberty was unable to shave the lead
to single digits, though, and the hot-shooting
Catamounts pulled away during the final 10
minutes.

A late 13-2 run enabled Hartford to emerge
victorious from its defensive struggle with
Liberty. The Hawks prevailed by a 46-39
count in the opening game of the GW
Thanksgiving Classic, at the Smith Center
in Washington, D.C. Liberty tallied eight of
the contest’s first 11 points over the opening
4:43 of play. Rachel McLeod provided six of
the Lady Flames’ markers, including a short
baseline jumper at 15:17 which put Liberty
on top, 8-3. The Lady Flames managed only
two points during the next 8:55. During the
meantime, Hartford tallied 13 markers, building its initial lead of the game to 16-10 on
Lisa Etienne’s pair of free throws, 6:32 before
halftime. Liberty quickly leveled the score at
16-16, by scoring on each of its next three
possessions. Avery Warley contributed four
points to the Lady Flames’ 6-0 burst, tying
the score with her putback with 5:05 showing
on the first-half clock. The Lady Flames kept
the Hawks off the scoreboard for the final
2:58 of the opening stanza. Liberty recorded
the half’s last four points during Hartford’s
drought, taking a 22-20 lead into the locker
room.Hartford emerged from halftime with a
10-0 surge. Amanda Weaver’s layup at 12:50
capped the run, giving the Hawks their largest advantage up to that point, 30-22. Brittany Campbell then posted five points and an
assist during a 9-0 surge, which put Liberty
back on top. Amber Mays finished off the run
with two free throws at the 8:15 mark, making the score 31-30, Liberty. Shortly thereafter, MaryLynne Schaefer keyed Hartford’s

a pair of three-pointers. Her triple from the
left wing boosted the Hawks’ lead to 45-35.
With only 1:22 remaining, the edge proved to

The South Alabama Jaguars connected on
nine three-pointers, pushing them past Liberty, 65-61, in the GW Thanksgiving Classic consolation game at the Smith Center
in Washington, D.C. Amber Mays, later
named to the all-tournament team, opened
the game’s scoring by canning a pair of lefthanded layups in the first 1:36 of play, staking
the Lady Flames to an early 4-0 lead.South
Alabama answered with five straight markers, claiming its first advantage, 5-4, when
Shakira Nettles made two free throws at
16:30. The Jaguars’ Karina Sproal tallied five
points in a row, opening up a bit of breathing room for her team. Her long three-pointer
at the 8:20 mark pushed South Alabama’s
edge to 18-14. South Alabama did not trail
again until only 1:48 remained in the stanza,
when Rachel McLeod went two-for-two from
the foul line for the Lady Flames, putting
her team in front, 29-27. The sophomore’s
free throws finished a 6-0 Liberty run. Liberty took a 31-30 lead into the locker room.
Back-to-back triples initiated an 8-0 burst by
the Jaguars, early in the second half. Brittney Rutledge’s long jumper from the corner
with 17:53 remaining closed the run with
South Alabama owning a 38-32 edge. Moriah Frazee made both the first and the last
baskets of Liberty’s ensuing 8-0 surge. Her
layup from the right block reclaimed the lead
for the Lady Flames, 40-38, with 14:05 showing on the second-half clock. South Alabama
bounced right back, and gained a four-point
lead, 50-46, on Siedah Banks’ old-fashioned
three-point play at 7:48. Liberty could get no
closer than two for the remainder of the contest. South Alabama sealed its win by sinking
five of six foul shots in the final minute.

Rebounding and stellar free throw shooting down the stretch enabled the James
Madison Dukes to claim a 77-64 victory
over Liberty at the JMU Convocation Center. Back-to-back baskets by JMU’s Dawn
Evans, the nation’s leading scorer entering
the contest, finished an 8-0 Dukes run. The
surge built the home team’s early lead to
nine points, 17-8. The Lady Flames clawed
back to within three points, 21-18, after Moriah Frazee’s three-pointer at the 9:43 mark
punctuated Liberty’s 5-0 run. Evans nailed
a triple on the Dukes’ ensuing possession,
beginning a 9-3 surge by the home squad.
Sarah Williams’ layup closed the run, boosting her team’s advantage back up to 30-21,
with 6:39 on the clock. Liberty took its first
lead since 4-2, when Moriah Frazee’s hoop
at 1:29 capped an 11-0 Lady Flames run.
Her connection made the score 38-36, Liberty. JMU then tallied the stanza’s final three
points, taking a 39-38 advantage into the
locker room. Liberty opened the second half
by scoring four points in the first 47 seconds.
The Lady Flames reclaimed the edge, 4239, after Moriah Frazee’s pair of made charity tosses. James Madison quickly bounced
back with six consecutive markers of its own.
The Dukes went ahead once again, 47-44,
on Evans’ three-pointer with 15:13 left. The
Dukes’ edge ballooned to nine, 56-47, after
a run of seven consecutive points. Moriah
Frazee’s second three-pointer of the game,
at 6:43, trimmed JMU’s lead to six, 60-54.
However, that was Liberty’s last made field
goal for the next five minutes. During the
Lady Flames’ drought, the Dukes put together a 10-2 surge. Another Evans triple, with
just 2:28 remaining, gave JMU its largest
lead of the evening, 70-56. Evans scored the
Dukes’ final 14 points, nine of which came
from the free throw line, enabling her team to
finish off a 13-point victory.

An 11-0, late second-half run helped No.
13/14 Auburn to pull away from Liberty in a
tightly-played contest. The Tigers were able
to remain undefeated on the season with a
64-53 triumph over the Lady Flames. Lady
Flame Amber Mays came up with four steals
during the game’s first five minutes. Two of
her thefts came during a 10-0 Liberty surge,
which turned a 7-5 deficit into a 15-7 advantage, at 14:08. Liberty’s edge eventually
reached 10 points, 23-13, after Kittery Maine
put back her own missed shot, 10:54 before
the intermission. The Tigers’ defense then
kept Liberty off the scoreboard for nearly
seven minutes, while Auburn reeled off a
15-0 run. Alli Smalley, who hit a pair of threepointers during the surge, capped the burst
with a made jumper at 5:05. Her connection
lifted Auburn to a 28-23 edge. The Lady
Flames bounced right back, fashioning a
10-2 spurt. Moriah Frazee notched five of the
run’s points, and the senior’s old-fashioned
three-point play with 55 seconds remaining
put Liberty up, 33-30. Liberty took a 33-32
lead into the break. Rachel Hammond’s
layup with 17:28 showing on the second-half
clock increased the Liberty advantage to 3733. The Lady Flames were still in front, 4139, after another Hammond basket, coming
at the 14:11 mark. However, those were Liberty’s last points for 9:23. In the meantime,
Auburn crafted its previously mentioned
11-0 surge. Sherell Hobbs tallied five points
during the run, which increased the Tigers’
lead to 50-41. Danika Dale canned a threepointer on Liberty’s next possession, ending
the drought and trimming the Lady Flames’
deficit to six, 50-44. It was close as Liberty
would get for the remainder of the contest,
though, as Auburn put the Lady Flames
away by hitting nine-of-12 free throws during
the last 1:32.
