Last Meeting: Radford 4, Liberty 3 (10 innings) (March 28, 2012 - Radford, Va.)
Last Liberty Win: Liberty 3, Radford 1 (May 14, 2011 - Big South Championship game)
Last Liberty Win at Radford: Liberty 5, Radford 3 (May 9, 2009 - Big South Tourney)
Radford (7-14), the four-time defending Big South regular season champion, opened
the season with a 3-13 record, but went 4-1 at the USF Spring Invitational this past weekend. First-year head coach Maggie Johnson’s roster includes nine freshmen. Two-time
Big South Pitcher of the Year Jackie Jenkins returns, although Allie Reid leads the team
with a 3.62 ERA. Becky Mantel (.309) paces Radford with 14 runs scored, while Morgan
Eye (.306) has stolen 11 bases and Jessie Hutchens (.258) has driven in 13 runs.
The Highlanders hold a 43-25 edge in the all-time series with Liberty, including a
sweep of the 2012 season series. The Lady Flames, however, downed Radford, 3-1, in
the final of the 2011 Big South Championship in Rock Hill, S.C., to claim their second
conference tournament title.
Liberty vs. Radford - 2012 Recap
Radford won all three games against Liberty in 2012, including a 6-3 win on March 21
in Lynchburg and a doubleheader sweep at Radford one week later, March 28.
A pair of homers during the fifth inning gave Liberty a 3-2 lead on March 21, but the
Highlanders responded with four runs in the top of the sixth to gain the victory, 6-3.
Jill Stephens hit a leadoff homer in game one at Radford, March 28, 2012. The Highlanders then scored seven runs in the second inning on the way to a 9-1 win.
In game two, Liberty’s Alyssa DiMartino went the distance in a 10-inning, 4-3 Radford
victory, with Nichole Beall stealing home for the winning run in the 10th frame.
Conference Openers
Liberty softball is 7-12 in conference openers since starting competition in the Big
South in 1994.
Liberty opens the conference schedule against Radford for the fifth time, and fourth
year in a row. The Lady Flames’ most recent conference-opening victory came April 4,
2008 against Birmingham Southern.
In last year’s conference opener, March 20, 2012 Radford rallied from a 3-2 deficit to
defeat Liberty, 6-3, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning at Liberty Softball Field.
Commonwealth Championship Contenders
For every season from 2006 through 2011, either Liberty and/or Radford appeared in
the Big South final, with the two Commonwealth rivals meeting in the conference championship game in both 2009 and 2011.
The Highlanders won the 2009 Big South title, defeating Liberty in the final. The Lady
Flames then beat Radford, 3-1, in the 2011 Big South Championship title contest. Sammi
Shivock and Katie Zavodny both made key contributions in the 2011 final, with Shivock
hitting a homer and Zavodny going 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.

Weekly Recap
Liberty posted a 3-3 record last week in Florida, falling to 2012 NCAA Tournament
participant UCF before going 3-2 at the USF Spring Invitational. The Lady Flames’ time
in Clearwater, Fla., began with losses to Iowa State and 2012 Women’s College World
Series team USF, and ended with three straight wins over Temple, Maine and Dartmouth.
On Saturday, Liberty defeated Temple, 6-5, in eight innings, scoring the final run on a
bases-loaded walk to Grace Nordan. Later that same day, the Lady Flames scored four
runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Maine, 4-3.
In Liberty’s most recent game, on Sunday, the Lady Flames recorded a season-high
15 hits, including eight for extra bases, in a 10-4 win over Dartmouth.
Zavodny Races Into National Lead in Stolen Bases
Zavodny is the conference and national leader in steals, having stolen 23 bases in 22
games played this season, already the fifth-most stolen bases by a Liberty softball player
in a single season. She is ranked first in the NCAA Division I national stolen bases listing,
at 1.05 steals per game.
She stole 26 bases as a freshman, and is the only player in program history with two
20-steal seasons in her career. Zavodny is on pace to break Liberty’s single-season program record for stolen bases, 39, set by Stacy Radulovich in 1996.
Walk (Off) This Way
Liberty won both of its games on Saturday on the final pitch. The Lady Flames defeated Temple, 6-5, rallying for two runs in the bottom of the ninth, including a literal walk-off
game winner, when Grace Nordan walked with the bases loaded for the winning run.
The Lady Flames then rallied from a 3-0 deficit, with a four-run rally in the seventh
inning to defeat Maine. Liberty scored the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh, when Maine’s third baseman dropped a popup that would have been the third out.
Earlier this season, Nordan hit a walk-off, two-run homer in a 9-8, eight-inning win
over Fairfield on Feb. 22.
15/8
Liberty recorded a season-high 15 hits on Sunday in a 10-4 win over Dartmouth, registering eight extra-base hits. Liberty’s eight extra-base hits were its most since April 19,
2011, when the team hit three doubles and six homers in a 16-3 win over Hampton.
Kelby Allen hit a triple and a homer, while Hanna Nichols doubled and homered. The

On the Road Again
Liberty is closing out a stretch of 11 straight games away from Lynchburg. In total, the
Lady Flames will play 20 out of its first 23 games on the road.
The Lady Flames will have a long homestand to end its regular-season schedule this
year, with its last seven regular-season games slated to be played at the Liberty Softball
Field. One for the Record Books
Katie Zavodny went 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs, one run scored and two stolen bases on Feb. 27 against Hampton. In the process, she set a single-game program
record for hits. Prior to Feb. 27, a four-hit game had been recorded 27 times in program
history, but never a five-hit game.
Zavodny then singled during her first at bat in the second game, giving her hits in six
straight at bats. The last Lady Flame with hits in six straight at bats was Meredith Crisante,
who did so April 10-11, 2012, getting three hits each against N.C. A&T and Hampton.
Back-to-Back
During the first inning of Liberty’s 5-4 win over East Carolina on Feb. 24, Liberty got
back-to-back homers from Holly Seiz and Sammi Shivock.
Prior to Feb. 24, the last time that the Lady Flames hit back-to-back homers was Feb.
24, 2012, against Savannah State, when Meredith Crisante and Amber Donovan hit consecutive round trippers in the fourth inning.
Welcome Freshmen
Three freshmen - pitcher Annah Jo Brittingham, first baseman Katie Han and third
baseman Blair Lawrence - appeared in Coach Wetmore’s opening-day starting lineup
against Tennessee Tech on Feb. 16. The last time three or more freshmen started the
season opener also came against Tennessee Tech, on Feb. 22, 2008.
Current volunteer assistant coach Keely McMillon started at catcher in the 2008 opener, joined by fellow freshmen Cassie Hendrix, Amber DePasquale and Elena Lampman.
Since opening day, three additional freshmen, Holly Seiz, Kassidy McCoy and Kenzie
Friesen, all drew starting assignments. This marks the third year in a row in which six
freshmen - true or redshirt - have cracked the starting lineup at some point in the season.
Bat Around
On March 10, Liberty scored nine runs during the fourth inning of a 16-3 win over N.C.
Central. The Lady Flames sent 12 batters to the plate, including one, Amber Donovan,
who scored two runs in the inning. Donovan had a two-run double, and Katie Han posted
a three-run triple, as Liberty capitalized on four NCCU errors during the frame.
Liberty’s nine-run fourth inning on March 10 was its biggest inning since scoring 10
runs in the fourth inning of a 14-13 win over East Tennessee State, March 6, 2012.
Early Trends
So far this season, Liberty is 11-1 when scoring four or more runs, and is 0-10 when
held to three runs or less. The Lady Flames are 8-2 when scoring first, and 3-9 when their
opponent scores first. Liberty has been good in one-run games, at 4-1.
Fantastic Freshmen (now Sophomores)
Last season, several freshmen made an immediate impact for the Lady Flames.
Catcher Kelby Allen stepped in and hit .306 with four homers and 21 RBIs, posting
the highest batting average by a Liberty freshman since 2005. She was then named to the
VaSID All-State second team.
Amber Donovan led the Lady Flames with 10 doubles, including an NCAA Division
I record-tying three doubles on Feb. 24 against Savannah State. She then hit a gamewinning three-run homer to seal a series sweep at Gardner-Webb (March 25).
Chandler Ball won a team-high 10 games, pacing Liberty with 110 strikeouts. She was
one of just six Big South pitchers with 10 wins and 100 strikeouts last season.
Hanna Nichols had some clutch hits, with a game-winning sacrifice fly against East
Tennessee State and a game-tying, seventh-inning double versus Charleston Southern.
