UNC Wilmington’s first-year head coach Kristy Norton, is familiar with the Lady Flames, after serving as the top assistant coach at James Madison for the last eight years. Back to North Carolina The Lady Flames are scheduled to play nine games in North Carolina this season, including a conference series at Campbell and a midweek doubleheader at UNCG. Last year, Liberty went 5-2 in the Tar Heel State, and the Lady Flames are 85-96 in North Carolina as an NCAA Division I program (since 1994). Katie Zavodny went 5-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, setting a new program single-game record for hits. In game two versus the Pirates, Liberty won, 10-1, in five innings. Sophomore pitcher Chandler Ball allowed four hits and one unearned run. Sammi Shivock and Kelby Allen both drove in three runs in the nightcap. Liberty then shut out Manhattan, 7-0, on Saturday, behind a two-hitter from freshman Annah Jo Brittingham. Zavodny tied her career high with three stolen bases, while Megan Robinson hit her first career homer, a three-run shot in the fifth inning. One for the Record Books Katie Zavodny went 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs, one run scored and two stolen bases on Wednesday against Hampton. In the process, she set a single-game program record for hits. Prior to Wednesday, a four-hit game had been recorded 27 times in program history, but never a five-hit game. Zavodny then singled during her first at bat in the second game, giving her hits in six straight at bats. The last Lady Flame with hits in six straight at bats was Meredith Crisante, who did so April 10-11, 2012, getting three hits each against N.C. A&T and Hampton. Shutting the Door Since allowing 10 runs (nine earned) in the home opener against Hampton, Liberty has not allowed an earned run in its last 12 2/3 innings pitched. That marks the team’s longest stretch without yielding an earned run since going 26 2/3 straight innings without allowing an earned run in May 2011. Freshman Annah Jo Brittingham followed up a four-hitter by Chandler Ball by pitching a two-hit shutout against Manhattan on Saturday. It marked the first complete-game shutout by a Lady Flame since Kat Johnson blanked Gardner-Webb, 1-0, on May 13, 2011. On a Tear During the last five games, Sammi Shivock is batting .588 with two doubles, one homer, eight RBIs and six runs scored, connecting for hits in each game. Jill Stephens is hitting .500 during that same span, with two doubles and a homer. Katie Zavodny has a .474 average over the last five games, stealing seven bases while scoring six runs and recording two doubles. Liberty has averaged over three extra-base hits in its most recent five games, connecting for 11 doubles and five home runs, while batting .307 as a team. Get On/Over/In The Lady Flames have shown the ability to manufacture runs lately, scoring a total of 25 runs on 24 hits in their last three games. During its recently-completed three-game homestand, Liberty scored two runs on double-steal plays. The team also drove in two runs on successful squeeze bunts, and cashed in on one sacrifice fly. Off and Running Katie Zavodny has stolen 13 bases in 12 games played this season, making her the Big South leader in stolen bases this season. She has already posted four multiple-steal games this year, including two three-steal games. Zavodny is now ranked fourth in program history with 51 career stolen bases. Although still early in the season, Zavodny is on pace to break Liberty’s single-season program record for stolen bases, 39, set by Stacy Radulovich in 1996. Good Timing Three Lady Flames - Sophomore Megan Robinson, along with freshmen Blair Lawrence and Katie Han - all registered their first career RBIs on Saturday against Manhattan. With the bases loaded and Liberty clinging two a 2-0 lead in the fourth, Han laced a pinch-hit RBI single. Robinson then went deep with her first career homer, a three-run shot in the fifth, and Lawrence plated Zavodny on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Curiously, Liberty’s previous extra-innings win was also won by a 9-8 score in eight innings. On April 7, 2012, the Lady Flames erased two four-run deficits against Charleston Southern. Jenny Law registered a walk-off single in the eighth, winning the game, 9-8. Law also recorded a walk-off base hit to down Winthrop, 4-3, one week earlier, on March 31, 2012. Back-to-Back During the first inning of Liberty’s 5-4 win over East Carolina on Feb. 24, Liberty got back-to-back homers from Holly Seiz and Sammi Shivock. Prior to Feb. 24, the last time that the Lady Flames hit back-to-back homers was Feb. 24, 2012, against Savannah State, when Meredith Crisante and Amber Donovan hit consecutive round trippers in the fourth inning. Going Yard Power hitting has been one hallmark of Liberty softball over the last several years. Liberty has hit 40 or more home runs in each of the last three seasons, including 52 home runs in 2010, 61 in 2011 and 44 homers last season. So far this season, the Lady Flames have hit 11 home runs in 12 games. All 11 of those homers have come over the span of the last nine games, during which time Liberty is 5-4. Four Lady Flames - Sammi Shivock, Hanna Nichols, Grace Nordan and Jill Stephens - have registered two home runs apiece. A total of seven Lady Flames have hit homers so far this season, and two more - Amber Donovan and Sydnei Lester - also have hit home runs during their careers. Welcome Freshmen Three freshmen - pitcher Annah Jo Brittingham, first baseman Katie Han and third baseman Blair Lawrence - appeared in Coach Wetmore’s opening-day starting lineup against Tennessee Tech on Feb. 16. The last time three or more freshmen started the season opener also came against Tennessee Tech, on Feb. 22, 2008. Current volunteer assistant coach Keely McMillon started at catcher in the 2008 opener, joined by fellow freshmen Cassie Hendrix, Amber DePasquale and Elena Lampman. Fantastic Freshmen (now Sophomores) Last season, several freshmen made an immediate impact for the Lady Flames. Catcher Kelby Allen stepped in and hit .306 with four homers and 21 RBIs, posting the highest batting average by a Liberty freshman since 2005. She was then named to the VaSID All-State second team. Amber Donovan led the Lady Flames with 10 doubles, including an NCAA Division I record-tying three doubles on Feb. 24 against Savannah State. She then hit a gamewinning three-run homer to seal a series sweep at Gardner-Webb (March 25). Chandler Ball won a team-high 10 games, pacing Liberty with 110 strikeouts. She was one of just six Big South pitchers with 10 wins and 100 strikeouts last season. Hanna Nichols had some clutch hits, with a game-winning sacrifice fly against East Tennessee State and a game-tying, seventh-inning double versus Charleston Southern. New Faces Liberty said goodbye to a 2012 senior class that included five starters, with three (Kelly Strickland, Meredith Crisante, Kaylee West) who were all-conference players. Strickland was the 2011 Big South Co-Player of the Year. This year’s team has no seniors, with a roster breakdown of seven juniors, six sophomores and nine freshmen. The last time that Liberty had no seniors on its softball roster was 2006, when the Lady Flames posted a 41-23 record, tying the program record for victories. Liberty’s 2013 freshman class is its largest since 2004, when the team also had nine freshmen. That class included pitcher Sarah Swor, an all-conference selection in 2004.
