Liberty opens the 2013 campaign looking to regain championship form, as the Lady
Flames won the 2011 Big South title before posting a sixth-place finish in 2012. Last season, the team went 19-36, including 9-12 in conference play. This year’s team features no
seniors, but a large, talented freshman class has been brought in. Liberty’s top returners
include a pair of 2012 VaSID All-State players, Katie Zavodny and Kelby Allen.
The Games
Liberty’s first three opponents all hail from the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), while
IUPUI competes in the Summit League. Tennessee Tech finished second at the 2012
OVC Softball Championship, and is predicted to finish second in the OVC East, followed
in third in the preseason poll by Eastern Kentucky.
Liberty is 3-2-1 all-time against Tennessee Tech, including a rare tie to open the 2008
season. The Lady Flames have won all five previous meetings against Eastern Kentucky
and are 1-0 versus IUPUI. Liberty and 2007 NCAA Division II national champion SIU Edwardsville will meet for the first time in softball.

Season Opening
Liberty is 12-14-1 all-time in softball season openers, including a 10-8-1 mark in the
NCAA Division I era. The only team that Liberty has opened two seasons against is Hampton, who the Lady Flames defeated to open the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
The Lady Flames have gone 0-4-1 in their last five season openers, with their last
season-opening win coming Feb. 17, 2007, a 5-3 victory over Appalachian State. A 2-2 tie
against this year’s season-opening opponent, Tennessee Tech, the second tie in program
history, led off the 2008 season.
Shining Under the Lights
The Lady Flames played their first home night game in program history on March 6,
2012, a 14-13 victory over East Tennessee State. Liberty trailed 12-2 during the fourth inning, but scored 10 runs on 11 hits in the bottom of the fourth to tie it at 12-all. Freshman
Hanna Nichols provided the game-winning sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Liberty’s 10-run comeback was the largest deficit overcome in the team’s NCAA Division I softball history. The Lady Flames set a stadium record with 18 base hits, and posted
a 10-run inning for the first time since April 1, 2006.
Strong Start
Last season, the Lady Flames went on a five-game winning streak from Feb. 11-25,
during which the team averaged 9.2 runs and 13 hits per game.
During the first two games of the winning streak, Liberty set program records for most
hits in a single game (19 versus N.C. Central) and in a two-game span (33).
Liberty went 5-3 during the month of February, 2012, tying the program record (2004,
2006) for most wins in the year’s second month.
Following the first 10 games in 2012, the Lady Flames were 6-4 with a .344 batting
average, scoring seven runs per game.
Fantastic Freshmen
Last season, several freshmen made an immediate impact for the Lady Flames.
Catcher Kelby Allen stepped in and hit .306 with four homers and 21 RBIs, posting
the highest batting average by a Liberty freshman since 2005. She was then named to the
VaSID All-State second team.
Amber Donovan led the Lady Flames with 10 doubles, including an NCAA Division
I record-tying three doubles on Feb. 24 against Savannah State. She then hit a gamewinning three-run homer to seal a series sweep at Gardner-Webb (March 25).
Chandler Ball won a team-high 10 games, pacing Liberty with 110 strikeouts. She was
one of just six Big South pitchers with 10 wins and 100 strikeouts last season.
Hanna Nichols had some clutch hits, with a game-winning sacrifice fly against East
Tennessee State and a game-tying, seventh-inning double versus Charleston Southern.
Impact Returnees
Katie Zavodny and Sammi Shivock return as starters for the third year in a row. Both
players played a key role as freshmen in Liberty’s 2011 Big South championship run.
Shivock set a program freshman record with nine homers in 2011, and was named to
the Big South All-Tournament team. Last year, she led the Lady Flames with 32 RBIs and
tied for the team lead with 31 runs scored.
Zavodny swiped 26 bases as a freshman in 2011, the third-most steals in a single season in program history. In 2012, she was named to the Big South All-Conference second
team, hitting .351 with 22 runs scored prior to a season-ending injury in April.
Power Surge
Liberty has hit 40 or more home runs in each of the last three seasons, including 52
home runs in 2010, 61 in 2011 and 44 homers last season.
The Lady Flames hit 28 homers over the final 28 games of the 2012 campaign. A total
of 11 Liberty players connected for at least one homer, led by Meredith Crisante’s nine.
Jill Stephens hit a career-high two home runs on April 10 against North Carolina A&T,
while Kelby Allen went yard twice in Liberty’s regular-season finale versus Longwood.

Back to Georgia
Liberty returns to Georgia, the home state of sophomore pitcher Chandler Ball, for the
first time since 2010. The Lady Flames are 7-11 all-time in the Peach State, highlighted by
a 4-1 showing at the 2010 Georgia Tech Buzz Classic, held in Woodstock, Ga.
This will be the first time in program history in which the Lady Flames’ season opener
will be held in Georgia.
New Faces
Liberty says goodbye to a 2012 senior class that included five starters, with three (Kelly Strickland, Meredith Crisante, Kaylee West) who were all-conference players. Strickland was the 2011 Big South Co-Player of the Year.
This year’s team has no seniors, with a roster breakdown of seven juniors, six sophomores and nine freshmen.
The last time that Liberty had no seniors on its softball roster was 2006, when the
Lady Flames posted a 41-23 record, tying the program record for victories.
Liberty’s 2013 freshman class is its largest since 2004, when the team also had nine
freshmen. That class included pitcher Sarah Swor, an all-conference selection in 2004.
That’s a Wrap
The Lady Flames won four Big South series finales in dramatic fashion last season.
Liberty downed Coastal Carolina, 4-2, on April 15. Sammi Shivock hit the game-winner, a two-RBI double in the seventh, while Chandler Ball pitched a four-hitter.
On April 7, the Lady Flames erased two four-run deficits against Charleston Southern,
tying the game on a Kelly Strickland grand slam in the sixth. Jenny Law registered a walkoff single in the eighth, winning the game for Liberty, 9-8.
The previous Saturday, March 31, saw Liberty rally from a 3-2 deficit with two outs in
the seventh, as Law came through with a walk-off single for a 4-3 win over Winthrop.
On March 25, Amber Donovan hit a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the seventh
inning to down Gardner-Webb, 7-5, in the series finale.
Go the Distance
Chandler Ball and Alyssa DiMartino shared an even workload last season, with 11
complete games apiece. However, both pitchers shouldered a heavy load at times.
Ball fashioned four straight complete games, stretching from April 6 until the first game
of a doubleheader against North Carolina A&T, April 10.
She was the second Lady Flames pitcher last season to have pitched three complete
games in a row. Alyssa DiMartino tossed three straight complete games, March 28-30.
The last time that two Lady Flames pitchers both tossed three or more consecutive
complete games during the same year was 2009.
Best in the Class
The Lady Flames earned the NFCA All-Academic Team Award, posting the 20th best
GPA (3.43) among NCAA Division I softball teams during the 2011-12 academic year.
Seven Liberty players were named NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes, in Meredith
Crisante, Alyssa DiMartino, Amber Donovan, Sydnei Lester, Grace Nordan, Megan Robinson and Sammi Shivock.
First Things First
Four current Lady Flames have reached base during their first career plate appearance. Grace Nordan hit a homer in her first career at bat, while Kelby Allen and Jill Stephens both singled during their first at bat. Marybeth Sciolino made her first career start
on April 4, and drew a walk during her first time to the plate.
