ACCURATE MEASUREMENT
Flow up the tapered tube lifts the float to an equilibrium position.
Flow rate is then measured against the flat top edge of the float.
FLOWMETER CHOICE
A complete VA flowmeter consists of a glass flow tube and float
scaled to the flow units required, and a frame to provide the end
block supports and to cover and protect the tube. The NGX Series
frames use flow tubes with nominally 100mm long scales,
whereas the smaller LGX frames use flow tubes with nominally
30mm scales.
To choose a complete flowmeter select the frame code required,
and separately specify the fluid flow range needed on the flow
tube scale.
NGX and LGX Series frames are designed to fit your process. The options available allow easy installation, usually
surface mounted on a vertical panel. Process connections and labelling can be customised to suit the application.

DFM PLASTIC VA FLOWMETER
FLOWMETERS
All plastic construction VA flowmeters providing excellent chemical resistance
and readability, supplied complete with end connections, either for solvent
welding to PVC pipe or threaded. Up to three bi-stable alarms can be fitted to
each unit, or if required a 4-20mA transmitter is available. Over the last ten years
many thousands of DFM units have been supplied to practically every industry

NG/LG SERIES GLASS VA FLOWMETER
FLOWMETERS
Improved for 2007, the NG & LG Series are
low cost frames for the standard 100mm
scale or reduced 30mm scale glass tubes.
Ideal for panel mounting. Both series are
supplied with mounting studs. Models
available with in-line or rear-facing process
connections; the latter available with an
optional needle valve for flow control. Float
and scale visibility is improved through the
use of a clear polycarbonate cover set
against a white background.

Shunt Orifice Flowmeters
are direct reading flow
measurement systems for
clean liquids and gases in
pipes from 1 1⁄4" to 24" diameter.
By introducing a standard sharp edge
orifice plate between flanges in the line, a
proportion of the main flow is diverted around
the external pipework, through a locally mounted

100mm SCALE GLASS TUBE & FLOAT
The Platon range of Glass Tube Flowmeters typically uses the 100mm
scale length borosilicate glass tube and a float. Based on the well known
variable area (VA) principle of flow measurement, these flowmeters
provide clear, simple and reliable operation.
FLOWMETERS
Principle of Operation
Fluid flowing vertically upwards through the tapered glass tube
causes the float to rise to an equilibrium position. Flow rate is
measured by reading the top edge of the float against the scaled tube
(see diagram below).
Platon Glass Tubes from RM&C are individually scaled and calibrated
according to customer’s requirements. Custom scales are produced
using our "Reynolds Curve" prediction software, which uses air or
water calibration data corrected for the effects of temperature and
pressure on the density and viscosity of the working fluid.

GIR (FLOSCAN) INFRA-RED FLOW ALARM
FLOWMETERS
Floscan Flow Alarms use an infra-red beam across the
glass flowtube of a VA meter. Passage of the float
between the sensor arms is detected and logic within
the electronics determines whether the float is above
or below the sensor position. Clipped to the rear of the
frame, the sensor can be adjusted up and down to the
required position. The sensor is 12Vdc powered with a
transistor switch output to drive external logic circuits.
A mains operated power unit and slave relay can be
used to drive either one or two Floscan sensors.

GMT SERIES METAL TUBE VA FLOWMETER
FLOWMETERS
Platon GMT Metal Tube Flowmeters are magnetically
coupled VA meters for liquids or gases. Fluid flow
lifts the float assembly (with its encapsulated
magnet) inside the tapered flow tube. The meters
external pointer follows the magnetic field indicating
flow against a clear 150° scale, typically displaying a
10:1 flow range.
Its robust construction with no
glands or seals makes the GMT
ideal for arduous service;
particularly
high
pressure
applications or extremes of
temperature.
It has particular advantages where opaque or staining
fluids would make glass tube flowmeters unsuitable.
Available in standard sizes from 1/2" - 4", with Brass or
Stainless Steel bodies.
Custom scales can be
produced to suit other
flows and conditions.
Alternative material options such
as Hastelloy,Monel and PTFE-lined
versions are available on request.
High and low flow alarm versions are also available

GMT SERIES METAL TUBE VA FLOWMETER
A permanent magnet encapsulated within the
stainless steel float drives the external
magnetically coupled pointer. Float movement
is related to flow rate, and the indicator scale is
marked in the correct units of flow for the
process conditions.
The standard unit requires no electrical power.
As the measuring element is a sharp edged
disc, the meter is relatively insensitive to
viscosity changes in the fluid and to pipe
bends in the external pipework. The only
moving part in the flow is the float which is
retained in place by float guides at either end
of the meter.

GMT SERIES TRANSMITTER/ALARM OPTIONS
GMTX (Vampire) is an electronic version of the standard GMT metal tube flowmeter,
where the mechanical pointer and scale is replaced with an LCD to give local meter and
digital display of flow rate and flow total. The totally solid state indicator is either loop
powered, or mains AC powered with a 4-20mA output. High and low alarms are shown
on the liquid crystal display panel, and can be signalled to the plant control system.

The Floscan Mains Interface Relay Module is a DIN rail/surface mounted unit that
provides DC power for one or two GIR (Floscan) Infra-red flow alarm sensors (page
28), from any mains power source. Each sensor output drives a relay in the module,
allowing external signalling via the 8 Amp voltage free relay contacts. The two
Floscan sensors can be high or low flow alarms (dictated by the sensor orientation)
and can be on the same
flowmeter tube, or on separate
flowmeters. Energised relay
normal conditions are displayed
by LED indicators. The module
can also be used to power and
monitor alarm outputs from the
GMTXD Transmitter (page 34).

VARIABLE ORIFICE/SWING VANE
FLOWMETERS
Manufactured in a wide range of sizes and specification options but all having the
same basic function. A dial and mechanical indicator continuously monitor the flow
rate, whilst electrical switches can be specified to signal when a particular level has
been reached during increasing or decreasing flows. Switches are field adjustable
over the full range. Where batching, trending, totalisation or recording is required, all
units can be supplied with a 0-10V or 4-20mA output.

Specification
The flow switch body houses a spring loaded valve plate (vane) which pivots off-centre in a hemispherical cavity.
Thus, the vane and cavity have a variable area orifice relationship. This gives both a high flow range and a linear
relationship between flow rate and vane displacement. The vane indirectly operates both the indicating needle
and an adjustable cam, which in turn triggers the micro-switch at any chosen setting of flow-rate. Two switches can
be supplied to provide high and low (or low-low) flow switching.

STAINLESS STEEL TURBINE & PELTON WHEEL
FLOWMETERS
A range of Stainless Steel turbine flowmeters capable of
measuring flow rates of water and low to medium viscosity
oils and other liquids in high pressure applications.
Providing an electrical pulse output, these meters when
linked to a display unit provide accurate and high
repeatability flow measurement.
The NS Series utilises the Pelton Wheel principle to provide
accurate flow measurement down to 0.18 L/min. High
accuracy measurement is provided by the NT Series for up
to 6" lines. For hygienic applications, the BNO series offers
the same high accuracy, in a ‘bug-trap’ free design. Stem
mounted displays are available on page 41.

The FW Series of digital indicators is specially

The MagX1 flowmeter has an advantage over conventional electromagnetic
technologies in that the sensor element converts the sensed signal into digital
format. This enables the signal to be transmitted over much longer distances (up to
500 metres) than possible with analogue transmission. The sensor also has an

Solid state flow switch provides a highly accurate monitoring and control solution for
water-based fluids. Our UQS7 combines two built-in switchpoints, a 4-20mA
analogue output, and a digital display in a single, compact unit. Ultrasonic sensing
technology measures time of flight between two discrete points, assuring highly
accurate measurement with low insertion loss as compared to other types of flow
sensor. Setpoints and dead-band are easily adjusted by using a built-in, userfriendly menu. Analogue output is scalable from 25% to 100% of full scale range,
providing a high degree of flexibility for a wide range of applications. A 10 -bit
microprocessor provides built-in self diagnostics and allows for switch time delays up
to 9.9 seconds. For applications requiring accurate monitoring of water-based fluids,
the UQS7 is an ideal choice.

LAMINAR WATER FLOW TRANSMITTER
FLOWMETERS
The L Series Water Flow Transmitters are designed
for demanding DI Water, or other clean water
applications. Differential pressure, fluid pressure
and temperature are measured in the laminar flow
channel. This information is then used to calculate
the volumetric flow rate of the liquid. All of the

Flow control valves for pure liquid applications which provide a constant pre-set flow
rate, independent of line pressure changes. Operation is by means of a rubber orifice
that reduces in size as the pressure increases, thus balancing the flow. Installation is
possible on pipework in any plane to fit existing pipework. Available either screwed,

SWITCHES
The body of the flowswitch is a standard pipe
tee, BSP threaded, which contains a paddle type
vane. Flow pushes the vane against magnetic
forces: when flow exceeds a critical value the
magnet actuates a reed switch. By coarse
adjustment of the reed switch position, the
output is changed between N/O & N/C
contacts: fine adjustment changes the flow
sensitivity and switch rate.

EXPLOSION PROOF ADJUSTABLE FLOW SWITCH
SWITCHES
For pipelines from 1 1/2" to 20", this paddle operated flow
switch uses magnetic coupling to transmit the vane
movement across a solid metal diaphragm to the electrical
switch output. Suitable for general purpose use. They are
supplied with a multi-layer vane suitable for all pipe sizes, on
liquids or gases. Normal mounting is vertical, via a 11/2" NPT
Threadolet welded to the horizontal pipeline.

LEVEL CONTROL
For site adjustable liquid level control
points on aqueous liquids, this four
electrode probe is mounted on the
tank top. Electrodes are cut to length
on site to define a) high or low level
alarm, b) pump “on” level, c) pump “off”
level, or similar functions, with the last
electrode left as the common or earth.
Electronic output is then made using
relay module RLM48T, with simple
electrical connections to the terminal

control valve for 1⁄4" or 1⁄2" lines. The
interchangeable plug and seat trims are

The standard actuator is available with

DP Gauge With Transmitter
Based on the Magnehelic® design,
this gauge retains the low DP
sensitivity and accuracy - and adds
two relay outputs for high & low DP
alarms. The Photohelic® principle
uses the standard gauge pointer to
interrupt infra-red beams at the
adjustable set points, which then
drive the output relays. High and
low set points are adjustable using
the front mounted knobs.

TRANSMITTERS
The Micro-Bar range are two-wire loop powered 4 - 20mA transmitters based on a
built-in capacitance based differential pressure cell for low range measurement on air
and other dry gases. Standard pressure connections are push-fit sockets but units are
also available with 1/4" NPTF threads or 6mm O/D stainless steel compression fittings.
The liquid crystal display shows the measured pressure and status of the alarm outputs. Alternatively, when used in conjunction with orifice plates, pitots or other DP
based flow sensors, units can be configured to provide root extraction of the pressure
measurement to display flow rate. Two switch outputs are programmable as flow or
pressure setpoints or, for flow measurement, to
provide a totaliser output pulse.
