Flow rate is then measured against the flat top edge of the float. FLOWMETER CHOICE A complete VA flowmeter consists of a glass flow tube and float scaled to the flow units required, and a frame to provide the end block supports and to cover and protect the tube. The NGX Series frames use flow tubes with nominally 100mm long scales, whereas the smaller LGX frames use flow tubes with nominally 30mm scales. To choose a complete flowmeter select the frame code required, and separately specify the fluid flow range needed on the flow tube scale. NGX and LGX Series frames are designed to fit your process. The options available allow easy installation, usually surface mounted on a vertical panel. Based on the well known variable area (VA) principle of flow measurement, these flowmeters provide clear, simple and reliable operation. FLOWMETERS Principle of Operation Fluid flowing vertically upwards through the tapered glass tube causes the float to rise to an equilibrium position. Flow rate is measured by reading the top edge of the float against the scaled tube (see diagram below). Passage of the float between the sensor arms is detected and logic within the electronics determines whether the float is above or below the sensor position. Fluid flow lifts the float assembly (with its encapsulated magnet) inside the tapered flow tube. The meters external pointer follows the magnetic field indicating flow against a clear 150° scale, typically displaying a 10:1 flow range. Its robust construction with no glands or seals makes the GMT ideal for arduous service; particularly high pressure applications or extremes of temperature. It has particular advantages where opaque or staining fluids would make glass tube flowmeters unsuitable. Available in standard sizes from 1/2" - 4", with Brass or Stainless Steel bodies. Float movement is related to flow rate, and the indicator scale is marked in the correct units of flow for the process conditions. The standard unit requires no electrical power. As the measuring element is a sharp edged disc, the meter is relatively insensitive to viscosity changes in the fluid and to pipe bends in the external pipework. The only moving part in the flow is the float which is retained in place by float guides at either end of the meter. The Photohelic® principle uses the standard gauge pointer to interrupt infra-red beams at the adjustable set points, which then drive the output relays. High and low set points are adjustable using the front mounted knobs.
