PromotionfromtherankofInstructortoSeniorInstructormaybeconsideredafterfour yearsoffull‐time
service,calculatedfromthehiredatetoDecember31ofthecalendaryearpriortothepromotiondecision
(promotiondecisionsaremadeinJuneofthefollowingyear). Forpart‐timeinstructorsat0.50FTEor
greater,promotiontoSeniorInstructormaybeconsideredafteraccumulatingtheequivalentoffouryearsof
full‐timeserviceinrelationtotheirappointmenttype(9or12month.)Forfixed ‐terminstructorswith
extendedpriorservice,promotiontotherankof SeniorInstructorcannotbemadeeffectivebeforetheendof
thethirdyearoffull‐timeservice. ,ortheaccumulationofitsequivalentforpart‐timeinstructorsat0.50FTE
orgreater.
Tobepromoted,acandidatemust:
• haveagraduatedegreeappropriatetotheassignedduties,orcomparableeducationalor
professionalexperience;
• havespecialskillsorexperienceneededintheunit;
• haveanexceptionalrecordofachievementintheassignedduties.
PromotiontotherankofSeniorIIInstructormaybeconsideredafterfouryearsoffull‐timeserviceatthe
rankofSeniorInstructor,ortheaccumulationofitsequivalentforpart‐timeSeniorInstructorsat0.50FTEor
greaterinrelationtheirappointmenttype(9or12‐month.)Tobepromoted,acandidatemusthavea
sustainedrecordofexceptionalachievementandevidenceofprofessionalgrowthandinnovationinassigned
duties.
ThecriteriaforTeaching,Advising,andOtherAssignmentsinthisdocumentcanprovideguidelinesfor
documentingandevaluatingthelevelofachievement.Promotionscannotbemadefromnon‐professorialto
professorialranks.SeniorInstructorsandSeniorIIInstructorsareeligibleforextendedfixedterm

CriteriaforPromotionofFacultyResearchAssistants
Facultymemberswithnon‐professorialrankarehiredinpositionstomeetunits'specificneeds.Criteriafor
promotionwillthereforebespecifictothecandidate'spositiondescription.
PromotionfromFacultyResearchAssistanttoSeniorFacultyResearchAssistantmaybeconsideredafter
four yearsoffull‐timeservice,calculatedfromthehiredatetoDecember31ofthecalendaryearpriortothe
promotiondecision(promotiondecisionsaremadeinJuneofthefollowingyear). Forpart‐timeFaculty
ResearchAssistantsat0.50FTEorgreater,promotiontoSeniorFacultyResearchAssistantmaybe
consideredafteraccumulatingtheequivalentoffouryearsoffull‐timeserviceinrelationtotheir
appointmenttype(9or12‐month.)ForFacultyResearchAssistantswithextendedpriorservice,promotion
totherankof SeniorFacultyResearchAssistantcannotbemadeeffectivebeforetheendofthethirdyearof

Tobepromoted,acandidatemust:
• haveagraduatedegreeappropriatetothefieldinwhichtheresearchactivitiesareperformed,or
comparableeducationalorprofessionalexperience;
• demonstrateahighlevelofcompetence,achievement,andpotentialinresearch,orserveeffectively
inapositionrequiringhighindividualresponsibilityorspecialprofessionalexpertise;
• demonstrateahighdegreeofinitiativeinresearchandleadershipamongresearchcolleaguesinthe
department,asdocumentedinauthorship,managementresponsibilities,andcreativeapproachesto
research.
PromotiontotherankofSeniorIIFacultyResearchAssistantmaybeconsideredafterfouryearsoffull‐time
serviceattherankofSeniorFacultyResearchAssistant,ortheaccumulationofitsequivalentforpart‐time
SeniorFacultyResearchAssistantsat0.50FTEorgreaterinrelationtotheirappointmenttype(9or12‐
month.)Tobepromoted,acandidatemusthaveasustainedrecordofexceptionalachievementand
