Dear 7th Grade Families,
Our 7th grade World Studies students at Loiederman have been selected to participate in an
exciting pilot program for MCPS known as JA Finance Park. Our students are participating in lessons
over the upcoming weeks that have centered on financial literacy. Through these lessons, we’ve provided
students with different ways to look at money so that they ultimately have a much more thorough
understanding of concepts like careers, income, taxes, savings, managing risk, debit vs. credit,
budgeting, and much more!
As a 7th grade team of Social Studies teachers, we combined the JA Finance Park curriculum and
additional materials we designed to create an experience that allowed our students to apply their growing
knowledge of the financial concepts to real life scenarios. These lessons also created the platform for
students to discuss economics in relevant and meaningful ways.
The culminating activity of the JA Finance Park program is for students to participate in a simulation at the
JA Finance Park facility in Fairfax, VA. During this experience, students must apply the financial
knowledge they’ve acquired in their World Studies classes to successfully navigate the life situation they
are provided.
The trip is scheduled for Thursday, March 10th and Friday, March 11th, 2016 Students will arrive at school
at the regular time (homeroom starts at 8:15 AM) and they will depart by charter bus at 8:45 AM to JA
Finance Park in Fairfax, VA. Students must bring a BAGGED LUNCH (no refrigerators at Finance Park).
Students should wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes, as they will be all day. Expected arrival
back at Loiederman is 2:45 PM and students will be dismissed from school at regular 3:00 PM time.
There is no cost for the trip. The permission slip is the only requirement to attend.
