GOING FOURTH!
Welcome to November and the beginning of the second quarter for 4th grade. As we
enter the season of giving and giving thanks for what we have, let us remember
that education is itself a gift to be cherished. As B.B. King once said,
“ The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.”
Introducing Mrs. Natalia Barber
Mrs. Barber is the 4th grade ESOL teacher. She was born in Russia where she
began her teaching career, teaching English as a foreign language. She has lived in
the United States for 17 years. She lives in Clarksburg with her husband and three
children who attend high school, middle school and elementary school. Other than
teaching she enjoys biking, swimming, watching movies and spending time with her
family. Mrs. Barber works in our classrooms providing support to our students in
vocabulary, language development and fluency both orally and in written form.
ESOL teachers are a cultural bridge for students who come from different countries
and whose first language is not English. We are lucky to have her in 4th grade.
READING NOTES:
In the second quarter students will be reading a variety of different genres and
types of literature including drama, poetry and prose. They will be examining
literary elements like character, setting, plot and theme. They will be exploring
how authors use language like figurative language to help them get their message
across to the reader. In the second half of the quarter students will be reading
informational texts in science on environmental issues and in social studies on the
explorers who in their quest for spices and riches ended up “discovering” the new
world and the native Americans who had lived there for thousands of years. The
European contact with the Native Americans changed both their worlds forever and
led to many of the customs and rituals we celebrate today including Thanksgiving.
MATH NOTES:
In the second quarter students will be focusing on learning to multiply numbers.
By the end of the second quarter all students should be multiplying 4 digit by 1
digit. It is important for students to be practicing their basic math facts every
night. Students should be aware of the basic multiplication facts that they do not
know and practice at least 2 different facts each week until they know them well.
Learning their basic multiplication facts in 4th grade will greatly help students as
they navigate higher order math in 5th grade and beyond.
Students will also be solving word problems involving area and perimeter,
measurement, and algebraic thinking.
HOMEWORK NOTES:
Students should be reading for at least 30 minutes each night. Help your students
get into a regular pattern of reading by providing a quiet place for them to read and
have them read at the same time each evening. Ask them questions about their
reading or when you have time, read with them. Helping your child foster a love of
reading will help them in their educational journey.
If students are having difficulty with their homework, write the teacher a note and
let them know. All the 4th grade teachers are ready and willing to help your
students when they encounter difficulty with their homework.
PARENT CONFERENCES:
Although you may request a parent conference any time you want to discuss your
child’s progress in 4th grade, November 11th and 12th have been set aside to allow
you a chance to meet with your child’s teacher. The conference is for you to discuss
the first quarter report card and any questions you many have. Please sign up for a
conference with your child’s teacher. If you cannot attend the conference and wish
to meet at another time, please let your child’s teacher know. We are looking
forward to talking with you during the parent conferences.
FALL FIELD TRIP:
The students enjoyed a wonderful field trip to the Derwood Agricultural Farm
where they learned about the environmental issues concerning run-off water, good
nutrition and observed farm animals. They learned that you can get 600 Big Macs
from 1 steer, that squirrels and other animals compete for limited resources in their
habitats and that topsoil is important for keeping the water level balanced in the
ecosystems. They also took home an abundance of goodies including apples, potted
flowers and a goodie bag. Special thanks to Mrs. Dinsmore who planned the trip
and to all the parent volunteers who helped. It was a great day despite the rain!
CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS
We are looking for parent volunteers to work with students in the classroom. If you
can spare an hour or two per week we can use you to read to students, help students
with vocabulary words and help them practice their computation skills and learn
their basic math facts. Please contact your child’s teacher for more information.
HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD BECOME A STRONGER
READER
Read to your child – even children who are good readers enjoy snuggling with a
parent and reading a book. Read your favorite childhood book to your child.
Talk and listen to your child about the books they are reading.
Have your child summarize the story they are reading both orally and also in
writing.
Help your child build a home library by giving your child books as gifts.
Get into the library habit. Go to the library regularly and make it a celebration. Go
to the library and then make a snack and have everyone read quietly for an hour.

November 2, 2015 – No school for students – Teachers prepare report cards.
November 11th and 12th Parent Conferences (These days are early release days)
November 17th – PTA fundraiser at California Tortilla.
November 25th – Early Release Day
November 26th and 27th – Thanksgiving Holiday.
REMINDER: Remember to check your child’s backpack for information coming
home or get into the habit of asking them if there are any papers from school they
need to look at. Most information goes home on Tuesday Newsday!

Bienvenidos al mez de Noviembre y el inicio del segundo trimestre para el cuarto
grado. Al entrar en la temporada de dar y dar gracias por lo que tenemos,
recordemos que la educación es, en sí mismo, un regalo para ser apreciado. Como
dijo una vez B. B. King,
"Lo bonito de aprender es que nadie se lo puede quitar de ti."
PRESENTACÍON DE LA SEÑORA NATALIE BARBER
Sra. Barber es la maestra de ESOL para cuarto grado. Ella nació en Rusia, donde
comenzó su carrera de enseñanza de Inglés como lengua extranjera. Ella ha vivido
en los Estados Unidos por 17 años. Ella vive en Clarksburg con su esposo y tres
hijos que asisten a la escuela secundaria, la escuela media y la escuela primaria.
Aparte de enseñar, le gusta andar en bicicleta, nadar, ver películas y pasar tiempo
con su familia. Sra Barber trabaja en nuestras aulas para apoyar a nuestros
estudiantes en el vocabulario, el desarrollo del lenguaje y la fluidez, tanto oralmente
como por escrito. Maestros de ESOL son un puente cultural para los estudiantes
que vienen de diferentes países y cuyo primer idioma no es el Inglés. Somos muy
afortunados de tenerla en cuarto grado.
NOTAS DE LECTURA:
En el segundo trimestre los estudiantes leerán una variedad de diferentes géneros y
tipos de literatura, incluyendo teatro, la poesía y la prosa. Ellos van a examinar los
elementos literarios como personaje, escenario, trama y el tema. Los estudiantes
estarán explorando cómo los autores usan el lenguaje como lenguaje figurativo para
ayudarles a conseguir la mensaje para el lector. En la segunda mitad, los
estudiantes leerán lectura de textos informativos de ciencia en temas ambientales.
En los estudios sociales leerán lectura de los exploradores, que en su búsqueda de
especias y riquezas, terminaron "descubriendo" el nuevo mundo y los americanos
Americanos Nativos que habían vivido allí por miles de años. El contacto europeo
con los Nativos Americanos cambió su mundo para siempre y dio lugar a muchas de
las costumbres y rituales que celebramos hoy, incluyendo Acción de Gracias.
NOTAS DE MATEMÁTICAS:
En el segundo trimester, los estudiantes se centra en aprender a multiplicar
números. Al final del segundo trimestre todos los estudiantes deben estar
multiplicando 4 dígitos por 1 dígito. Es importante que los estudiantes estan
practicando sus matemáticas básicas cada noche. Los estudiantes deben ser
conscientes de las operaciones básicas de multiplicación que no conocen y tienen que
practicar, al menos, 2 operaciones diferentes cada semana hasta que los conocen
bien. Aprender sus tablas de multiplicación básicas en 4º grado será de gran ayuda
a los estudiantes a medida que van a aprender matemáticas avanzadas en quinto
grado y más allá.
Los estudiantes también encontrará la solución de problemas que involucren área y
perímetro, medición y pensamiento algebraico.
NOTAS DE TAREA:
Los estudiantes deben leer por lo menos 30 minutos cada noche. Ayude a sus
estudiantes a encontrar un patrón regular de la lectura, proporcionando un lugar
tranquilo para ellos para leer a la misma hora cada noche. Hágales preguntas
acerca de su lectura y cuando tienen tiempo, lea con ellos. Esto ayudará a su hijo a
fomentar un amor por la lectura que les ayudará en su viaje educativo.
Si los estudiantes están teniendo dificultad con su tarea, escribe el profesor una
nota y hacerles saber. Todos los profesores de 4º grado están listos y dispuestos a
ayudar a sus estudiantes cuando se encuentran con la dificultad con su tarea.
CONFERENCIAS DE PADRES:
Aunque usted puede solicitar una reunión con los padres cuando usted quiera, el 11
y 12 de Noviembre se han puesto a un lado específicamente para darle la
oportunidad de reunirse con el maestro de su hijo. La conferencia es para discutir la
primera reporte de su hijo y cualquier otra pregunta que tienen. Por favor,
registrarse para una conferencia con el maestro de su hijo. Si no puedes asistir a la
conferencia y desean cumplirlo en otro momento, por favor, deje saber al maestro de
su hijo. Esperamos poder hablar con usted durante las conferencias de padres.
VIAJE DE OTOÑO:
Los estudiantes disfrutaron de una maravillosa excursión a la Granja Agrícola de
Derwood. Ellos aprendieron acerca de las cuestiones ambientales relacionadas con
el agua de escorrentía, la buena nutrición y los animales de la granja. Se enteraron
de que usted puede conseguir 600 Big Macs de solo 1 buey, que las ardillas y otros
animales compiten por recursos limitados en sus habitats, y que la tierra vegetal es
importante para mantener el nivel de agua equilibrado en los ecosistemas. También
se llevaron a casa una gran cantidad de golosinas incluyendo manzanas, flores en
maceta y una bolsa de regalos. Un agradecimiento especial a la Señora Dinsmore
que planearon el viaje y a todos los padres voluntarios que ayudaron. Fue un gran
día a pesar de la lluvia!
VOLUNTARIOS DE SALÓN:
Estamos buscando a los padres voluntarios para trabajar con los estudiantes en el
aula. Si le sobran una o dos horas por semana, entonces podemos utilizarte para
leer a los estudiantes, ayudar a los estudiantes con las palabras del vocabulario y
ayudarles a practicar sus habilidades de computación y aprender sus operaciones
matemáticas básicas. Por favor, póngase en contacto con el maestro de su hijo para
obtener más información.
CÓMO AYUDAR A SU HIJO A SER UN LECTOR FUERTE:
Leer a su hijo - incluso los niños que son buenos lectores disfrutan de leer un libro
con un padre. Lea su libro favorito de su niñez con su hijo.
Hable y escuche a su hijo acerca de los libros que están leyendo.
Haga que su hijo resume la historia que están leyendo en forma oral y también por
escrito.
Ayude a su hijo a construir una biblioteca en casa, dando a su hijo libros como
regalos.
Adquiera el hábito de la biblioteca. Vaya a la biblioteca con regularidad y que sea
una celebración. Usted puede ir a la biblioteca, tomar un aperitivo, y luego tener a
todos leer en silencio durante una hora.

2 de Noviembre, 2015 – No hay clases para los estudiantes - Los profesores
preparan boletas de calificaciones.
11 y 12 de Noviembre Conferencia para Padres (These days are early release days)
17 de Noveimbre – Recaudador de fondos de PTA en California Tortilla.
25 de Noviembre – Día de salida temprana
26 y 27 de Noviembre – Día de Acción de Gracias.
RECORDATORIO: Recuerde revisar la mochila de su hijo para obtener
información volviendo a casa o entrar en el hábito de preguntar si hay alguna
papeles de la escuela que necesitan para mirar. Mayoría de la información se va
a casa en la carpeta amarilla titulado “Tueday Newsday”!
