A strip of tall wheatgraSs was seeded in field VIII below the drain
ditch. This field is highly Tlkaline. pcor stands developed this
year and this will b reseede in ttle ,ring of 1.954c, Some plots
All also be planted on the muck tract,
Lotus corniculatus, An annual planting of Lotus corniculatus was
starte,;':t last year to detaimins the winter survival and the percent
of es'Grblishment,. Last ycar's planting survived the winter quite
well, The plots seeded this fall developed excellent stands. This
trial i2slrldes Granqsr„ Cascade, So Oregon Narrowleaf and Ladino
clover Ladino survived the winter very well©
Introductory( Nursery.
Mety
-ent varieties and strains of grasses and legumes were
plautee in an introducery nursery on the station this summer. These
were seeded in 12 foot

/falfa Variety Trial. This year Ranger a gain was the highest
yieioing alfelta in the trials however, there was no significant
ddfferonoe, statistically, between the varietiesc. This may have
been largely due to the Meadow romtail which was cross-seeded
when the trial was establiShed. , There is considerable difference
between density of stands of alfalfa.
The data from the trial is summarimsd in Tables 2-6. Table
gives surtmary of yield by years for this trial. Tables 5 and
6 give long time yields and averages of varieties still in the
nrsery. Tin new variety trial planted this year is smaller
plot alas than the former trials. By using present handling
on more nnifom soil it is possible to test more varieOy usluns.:::a37e. -!-Tc,ye .. say also help eliminate the
