From the minutes of the December 1949 meeting the committee went on
record as Eavoring the release of Shasta oats providing it maintained
its satisfuotory performance this past year in the Central Oregon trials.
I am enclosing several summary tables bringing the results obtal
from Shasta in comparison with other commonly grown varieties to the
Committeegs attention,
in Table 1 the yields of Shasta and other spring oat varieties or
the period 1944 to 1950 are presentede These yields were obtained from
nursery yield trials at the Klamath Experimental Area„ You will note
that during this period, which included 1948, when Shasta was severely
damaged by a late spring frost, that Shasta was le per cent better than
Victory in yield.
The agronomic data including plant height, bushel weight, and heading data are summarized in Table 2. You will note from these data that
Shasta is as tall„ rather heavy, late maturing oat. Its recommendations
in other areas should definately follow results from trials such as
these.
In Table 2 the nursery yields from three locations including
Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crook counties. of Central Oregon for three
years are shown, Shasta performed exceptionally well and outyielded
Victory, the check variety, by 13 per cent.
Field plot comparisons were made at five locations in Central Oregon
and the averages shown in Table 4,, Again the superiority of Shasta is
evident, The stand was poor in the Shasta plots as a result of frosted
seed with poor germination. Shasta, however, tillered profusely. and the
yield more than compensated for.
These nursery trials were conducted in randomized and replicated
experiments. No level of significance has been attached to these tables
because the analyses are not available at this time.

It is evident from these data that Shasta is a superior yielding oat for
both the Klamath and Central Oregon areas and the committee should give every
consideration to release of this variety and recommend it to growers in areas
where it is adapted.
It should also be emphasized that Shasta has no stem or crown rust
resistance but is resistant to many of the oat smuts. Stem rust has been
observed at Zamath and in Central Oregon but it doeunit seem to be of
serious enough importance to delay the release of Ohasta.
