Other Crop Work
Alfalfa Variety Trials
A series of alfalfa variety trials wa8 planted in late summer of 1937
and the first yields were obtained on them during the current season. These
yields are shown in Table 6. It will be noted that all of the higher yielding
varieties are of the variegated type. Even though these plots have not undergone a particularly severe winter the Chilean and common types produced inferior
yields.
Seed Flax Variety Trials
A seed flax variety trial consisting of six varieties was planted on
May 27, 1938
The yield data for these trials are shown in Table 7. The
variety Newland is outstanding with a single plot yield of 32 bushels per acre,
It is a late maturing variety. Because of its lateness it probably would not
show up so favorably in the average season with earlier fall frosts. This
variety also has the disadvantage of being rather susceptible to flax wilt
Bison is the variety looked upon most favorably by the oil companies. 1'3
is a consistently high yielder, high in oil content, and has the advantage of beiag
quite resistant to wilt.
None of the varieties showed signs of heat canker.

Seed Flax as Nurse Crop
In an attempt to get some information as to the value of flax as a nurse
crop for clover a trial involving duplicate plots of six clovers with flax was
planted. The soil began to dry out rather rapidly shortly after the flax came
up and at a time when irrigation mater could not be gotten on the plots. As a
result only the more vigorous sweet clovers became established. The growth of
white sweet clover and yellow sweet clover was so rapid and abundant as to
compete with the flax. These data are presented in Table 8.
The soil in these plots proved to be very variable with respect to
salinity. There was noticeably more salinity in Series I than in Series II, and
the average seed yield in Series I was approximately half that of the other series

The above table is temporary and the figures are subject to revision
when existing alkali areas have been measured out.
These plots have been recorded but have not been figured in the
average for the reason that alkali and hardpan seriously lowered stand and
yield .

Lemmon alkali grass growing in soil of high salinity in the
alfalfa plots. Saline area e xtends on into sugar beet trial.
These plots are located on the edge of the largest area of
Class V land in Klamath County. Eleven thousand acres under Klamath
irrigation projects are Class V because of salt content.
24
Method of weighing alfalfa plots. Shocks were suspended
from a 500-pound spring scale on a small net.
25
It is planned to install a much more extensive seed flax trial in
1939 involving more replications and rate and date plantings in addition to
variety and nurse crop trials.

Sugar Beets
In late July of 1937 two acres of sugar beets were planted for seed. 1"-ic
stand was good except on a very strongly saline area They were accidentally
grazed off in October but wintered over with a loss of from five to six per ce:r :
winter killing, A yield of approximately eight hundred pounds per acre is ex
pected upon completion of cleaning.

Wheat Rust Nurseries
Three wheat 7:ust•nurseries were planted in widely separated areas in
Klamath county, One dried out for lack of available irrigebion water,, Another
showed no rust on any of the varieties. One showed a relatively light infection
on Fedexation and Marquis and a trace on Ore. M-19, Ore. M-29 and Minor. The
varieties included in the trials are listed below,,,,

Strawberry clover planted in summer of 1937 on strongly saline
land in Klamath county. The tall growing plants are red clover.
This appears to be a strain particularly resistant to saline soils.
