Mill Creek Towne Kindergarten News It is important that you check your child’s green home folder, complete any information, and repack it in his/her backpack. Please remember to return the homework journal on Thursdays. Please remember to check your child’s lunch account regularly and make sure that there is enough money in their lunch account. Reading for Literary Experience Foundational Skills Comprehension is an ongoing focus when teaching reading. We are reading fictional stories. Students are making predictions about the stories from reading the title, and making personal connections to the text as they read. The students are practicing retelling the beginning, middle and end of the story with details. We are practicing all of our 44 kindergarten words and some are practicing first grade words. It is very important that your child knows all of their letters, letter sounds, and word wall words. If you need another copy of the list then let your child’s teacher know. Volume 6, Issue 6 February 12, 2016 Writer’s Workshop Students will continue to draw, dictate, and write in order to narrate a story. Students will spell simple words phonetically and use letters from consonant sounds. We are still working on spacing and punctuation marks. Please continue to work on Words Their Way with your child at home. It is part of our spelling program. Math We have our geometry unit. This unit is on shapes. Students will identify two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Students will also have to describe their attributes. The vocabulary words this month are: square, triangle, circle, rectangle, cone, cube, sphere, cylinder, and rectangular prism. They will also be exposed to the pyramid. Students will have a chance to go on a shape hunt at school and at home. We will continue to discuss external features of some plants and animals. We will start a unit on insects. We will look at the characteristics of insects. We will look at the external features of insects. We will look at the local plants and animals in Maryland and see what external features help them to survive in Maryland. Social Studies This month we will continue to identify jobs and the skills that are needed to perform them. We will discuss what they want to be when they grow-up and why. please let your child’s teacher know. We are looking for a dentist, police officer, and a firefighter. If you know of anyone let us know.
