Mill Creek Towne Kindergarten News It is important that you check your child’s green home folder, complete any information, and repack it in his/her backpack. Please remember to return the homework journal on Thursdays. Please remember to check your child’s lunch account regularly and make sure that there is enough money in their lunch account. Dr. Seuss Birthday Read Across America We celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday during the first week in March. We read several Dr. Seuss books. We discussed rhyming words. Dr. Seuss books are also a great place to find word wall words and to discuss characters, setting, problem, and solution. Please take this time to enjoy reading with your child. Reading Students will read and discuss informative text. Students will continue to ask and answer questions about key details. We will discuss how to determine the main idea of the text. We will also discuss how to retell key details. Please continue to practice the word wall words and letter sounds. It is important that all students know the 44 word wall words and knows how to spell them. This will help them with their writing and reading. Writer’s Workshop Students will write informative text. Students will select an animal, ask questions and find the answer using print and digital sources. Students will gather information to draw, dictate or write an informative sentence about the topic. We will also discuss punctuation marks and how to use them appropriately. Please make sure that you are practicing with your child using the homework journal. It is so important that you are working with your child on their writing. Math We will discuss composing and decomposing shapes. This involves students learning how smaller shapes can be put together to form larger shapes and how larger shapes can be made of smaller shapes. When students take apart and build shapes, students will be able to talk about the number of sides and corners. It gives the students the opportunity to move shapes based on their attributes. This will lead students to a deeper understanding of geometry. We will get a chance to observe our Darkling Beetles. We will identify and describe the body parts of insects. Students will sort and explain what is an insect and what is not an insect. We will continue to discuss the animals that we see in Maryland. We will compare animals that live here and animals that live in other places. Social Studies We will discuss natural resources used to make goods. Our definition of a natural resource is a gift of nature that are used to make a product. For example: an apple is a natural resource as a gift of nature. The product would be apple pie, apple juice, candy apple and apple sauce.
