Qualtrics Overview
Qualtrics University Research Suite: http://qualtrics.com/university/researchsuite/
Qualtrics University offers instructions and video tutorials for how to use any feature within the
software. Here are those which were discussed in the meeting:
Creating a survey:

Collaborating with SAREP and others to plug survey into bigger picture; surveys can be shared at a
variety of levels of access. A process for sharing surveys is under development; we are looking into
creating a group with whom you’ll collaborate in order to plug into the big picture (this will be a very
important step!). By discussing your project with SAREP staff, information will be collected (via the
gateway instrument) on what type of assessment is being done and how it relates to the big picture.
Engaging in this step will allow for your assessment information to be included in the story about the
impact that the Division of Student Affairs has on students.

Display Logic-make questions that don’t apply to all respondents only appear to those who need to
answer the question, based on a previous response or other indicators (consider: the more we “slice”
data, the more the generalizability decreases):

Log into the account via this website, using your OSU credentials (see instructions on the website or
below the link): http://oregonstate.edu/main/online-services/qualtrics
“The OSU Qualtrics has been enabled with Single Sign-On capability. To log into the OSU Qualtrics
system, simply click on the “Qualtrics Login” button above to create a new account or login to your
existing account. By default, Qualtrics will use the OSU username and password you logged into your
computer with if it’s a Windows PC. If you are prompted to enter a username and password, please use
your primary domain login and password. You may have to type your domain followed by a backslash
and then your username (e.g. ONID\beaverosu, CN\john.beaver, FSMAIL\marybeaver, etc.). If you’re
unsure of your domain login and password or have problems logging in, please contact your DCA.”
Learn Qualtrics in 5 steps:

Universal design considerations:
 color usage
 alt tag associated with the picture for folks with screen readers




The auto-next button is ">>" which is not readable by a screen reader
progress bars-use text option (best practice is to just estimate how many minutes it will take)
if a question is required, indicate this in the question
Daniel has more information about this that will be shared with the group
Look & Feel section: It would be nice to have a streamlined look for Student Affairs with a header &
consistent accessibility messages & possibly a “sponsored/approved by OSU’s Divisions of Student
Affairs” message.
Other things that can be accomplished in Qualtrics:
 Embedding video or images
 Can have the survey act as an intervention; if they answer in a certain way, present them with
specific information
 Libraries can be used to standardize questions across groups
 Response validation
 Dynamic reporting features, can control what data is shared; detail or broad, aggregate data
 If you’re planning to conduct more advanced statistical procedures, contact Daniel in advance in
order to ensure that your instrument is set up in a way that lends itself to the analysis.
Question for Assessment Council: What looks exciting? What do you want to learn about?
 General walk-through
 How to link pre/post surveys with unique identifiers to track change over time
 Display Logic
 Piping
 Uses for Qualtrics other than surveys (a lot of interest here)
o conference registration
 It would be great if Council members could have access to peer reviews over the years in
Qualtrics; Enter assessment reports Qualtrics and have it populate the rubric for reviewers with
a built in self-assessment
 General training around writing survey questions & what likert scales to use, other best
practices with other methods (like, focus groups, interviews, etc.)
 Using Qualtrics as a data gathering site for annual report; how can we make it so people can
enter as many points as they need to through the system?
 It would be great if there was a way to embed a pop-up video recorder for collecting video
responses from students (Maureen will pass this along to Qualtrics as a development idea).
