Student Worker Learning Outcomes Project
Building off of the discussion from our previous meeting, assessment council members were asked to
break into groups to discuss their ideas for a research or assessment question.
Group: Gus, Jennica, Melissa, Remi



The big lofty assessment question is: How does student development contribute to wellness?
Use LGGs to hone in on particular question-allows us to explore various aspects
o (SLI students): What is your comfort level in communicating in "x" environment -- same
overarching question can be asked with each of the LGGs
Would provide feedback on training and promote value of working on campus to students &
parents
Group: Rick S., Dave C., Tom W., Kent S., Maureen


We know more involvement = better performance but WHY?
Is there a difference in impact between "low-touch" student workers vs. "high-touch" student
workers?
o What is impact in this case? Maybe start with graduation rates, GPA, etc.
o ID what student worker positions in the division are low/high touch
 Define high/low touch
o Look at data from Stefani's office & EBI data to guide:
 Look at hours worked as one of the factors
 Div of StuAff student workers vs. student workers in academic colleges (could
even look between colleges)
 How are student interns considered?
 Look at "types" of students hired—do we tend to hire high achievers?
o Based on what we see in the data-dig deeper into what causes the impact (engagement
with peers, engagement on campus or with a mentor, etc.)
o Create high impact practices for supervisors of student workers
Group: Daniel C., Kami, Tine, Jodi, Linda, Daniel N., Pat, & Jeff

For those students who hold/held stuaff positions, what are they taking from their employment
in relation to LGGs
o intern vs. student employees
o Why students are there (just for a paycheck?)
o How do we connect the dots? If we do find that there are prominent LGGs, how do we
turn that around into recommendations for supervisors of student workers?
Group: Jo, Juliana, Ozge, Richard A., Michele





There's a perception among employees that there's not enough time to spend 1:1 with
students; what are student perceptions of that and how does that impact their wellbeing?
o Health & wellbeing, tying to strategic plan & LGGs-how can we incorporate these into
our work?
o Consider the changing university & how that impacts student wellness
How do programs in Student Affairs impact retention?
How does the increase of students and reduction of high-touch encounters impact wellbeing?
What kind of learning in alignment with LGGs is developed in student workers in the Division of
Student Affairs?
What factors (specific to OSU) contribute to critical thinking & self-awareness (they picked these
2 LGGs because they are likely to be consistent across the division)
Themes:

LGGs seem to be a theme; focusing on “essential learning outcomes” from the Association of
American Colleges and University’s Liberal Education and America’s Promise campaign (LEAPwhich has informed the LGGs) would allow us to have a national conversation.
o Depending on our data, we may be able to re-fuel LGGs
Next steps: Maureen, Jennica, Richard, & Daniel will discuss the ideas that each group brought forward
and articulate a research or assessment question that aligns with the group’s interests. This will be sent
back out to the Assessment Council for approval.
Meetings for next year
Maureen will soon be making the schedule for next year's assessment council meetings; she asked the
group if they'd like to remain with the same timing in scheduling (2 times per month, 1.5 hours at a
time) or try something different. Members present said they would like to stick with the same timing. A
suggestion was given to remake name tents so that they have names on both sides.
Next Meeting:
March 5, 2014
9:00 am-10:30 am
MU Council Room
Notice: March 19th meeting is cancelled.
