Oregon State University Student Affairs Assessment Council Minutes October 24, 2012 Attendance: Ozge Akcali, Teresita Alvarez, Tina Clawson, Rick DeBellis, Carrie Giese, Kami Hammerschmith, Pat Ketcham, Chrysanthemum Mattison, Remi Nagata, Jodi Nelson, Michele Ribeiro, Ann Robinson, Rebecca Sanderson, Doug Severs, Rick Stoddart, Kent Sumner, Tom Watts, Melissa Yamamoto, Jennica Vincent Review Valley Library Assessment Plan? Rick Stoddard had asked if some of the council members would be willing to review the Library’s assessment plan and provide feedback. Rick has volunteered to review some of the Student Affairs plans. The group agreed and Rick DeBellis, Ann Robinson, and Rebecca Sanderson agreed to review the plan and provide feedback to Rick. He will send the plan to us electronically and then we can set up a time to meet with him and provide our impressions/feedback. Discussion: Learning Outcomes and the LGG’s Rebecca has been asked to begin mapping the Student Affairs learning outcomes to the University Learning Goals for Graduates. Rebecca distributed a grid with the LGG’s and Department Names as well as a list of edited learning outcomes from various units in student affairs (taken from Compliance Assist). One issue Rebecca noted was the learning outcome drift toward using the language of the LGG’s for outcomes. This has muddled in many cases the clarity of the learning outcome and has in some cases made them less measurable. The group discussed learning outcomes, how to match to the LGG’s as we continue to work on this throughout the year. Members were asked to look at their learning outcomes and to make sure that they were specific, observable, and measurable. Next they were asked to match one learning outcome to only one LGG even though there may be some overlap. This is a topic that will continue to be discussed and worked with throughout the year. The outcome will be a matrix where all Student Affairs learning outcomes are mapped to the LGG’s so that we can see our overall contributions as well as any areas in which we may not contribute as much. Copies of handouts available at next meeting or by request. Student Affairs is not expected to cover all LGG’s nor is any academic department expected to cover all LGG’s. This means that we may not contribute to some or may not contribute with the same intensity or dose as we do others. This is expected, anticipated, and clear. Likewise no department is expected to contribute to all of the LGG’s. Remaining questions from the 10/10/2012 Methods discussion? This discussion and educational session will continue at the November 7, 2012 meeting. Announcement: The date, time, and location of Assessment Council meetings are posted on the Student Affairs Assessment web page under Assessment Council Meetings.
