Student Affairs Assessment Council Minutes November 28, 2012 Attendance: Rebecca Sanderson, Maureen Cochran, Melissa Yamamoto, Kami Hammerschmith, Carolyn Killefer, Remi Nagata, Michele Ribeiro, Ozge Akcali, Jennica Vincent, Dave Craig, Carrie Giese, Jeff Kenney, Luke Schalewski, Doug Severs, Rick Stoddart, Jessica Baron Rebecca lead the Assessment Council through an in-depth discussion about Learning Outcomes (LOs), components necessary to make up a learning outcome explained, followed by an open discussion about some example learning outcomes that were provided. After discussing each learning outcome the group discussed which of the Learning Goals for Graduates (LGGs) is the best match. The PowerPoint slides used with this discussion can be found online. Discussion Highlights: Bloom’s Taxonomy is a great resource for considering various levels of cognitive complexity. A list of action verbs associated with each of the 6 stages can be found on page 2. Having clear learning outcomes helps the department to understand what exactly needs to be measured. By the end of this year, Rebecca needs to be able to relate the Division’s LOs to LGGs. Understanding the context of what’s being measured will help to match the LO to the appropriate LGG. One LO may relate to several LGGs, however, it’s important to identify the key LGG with which it most closely relates. No single department is responsible for fulfilling all of the LGGs, nor is anyone responsible for fulfilling one on the LGGs in its entirety. We are, however, expected to contribute so that as a University we can provide these experiences to students.
