Honor Committee Report ACTION REQUIRED: None BACKGROUND: The Honor Committee provides periodic report to the Board on its goals and priorities. DISCUSSION: Nicholas Hine, the 2014-2015 Chair of the Honor Committee, will report on the work planned for the year ahead. He will also report on the effects of recent changes to the Honor Committee’s by-laws. Mr. Hine is a fourth-year in the College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in Political and Social Thought. ACTION REQUIRED: None Athletics Director’s Remarks BACKGROUND: At each meeting, the Athletics Director reports to the Board on current issues and events that affect operations of the Department of Athletics. DISCUSSION: The Athletics Director will provide a wrap up of the 2013-2014 season for U.Va. athletic teams. 2 UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA BOARD OF VISITORS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY BOARD MEETING: June 6, 2014 COMMITTEE: Student Affairs and Athletics AGENDA ITEM: II.B. Report on Women’s Soccer and Women’s Tennis ACTION REQUIRED: None BACKGROUND: The 2013 Women’s Soccer season was the best in school history with the team setting a school record of 24 wins, 78 goals, and 16 shutouts. The team earned the regular season Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) title and received the program’s first bid to the NCAA Women’s College Cup. The recently concluded Women’s Tennis season was also the best in school history. The team finished in a four-way tie for the regular season ACC title, and subsequently won its first ACC tournament title. The UVA women earned a #3 national seed in the NCAA tournament, advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time, finished with a program best record of 24-6, and rising third-year student Danielle Collins won the NCAA Women’s Singles championship. DISCUSSION: Head Coach Steve Swanson and 2013 graduate Kate Norbo will provide a report on the state of the soccer program. Associate Head Coach Troy Porco and Danielle Collins will report on the tennis program’s 2014 record-breaking season. Mr. Swanson joined the U.Va. Women’s Soccer team as Head Coach in 2000; prior to coming to U.Va. he held head coaching positions at Dartmouth College and Stanford University. He is a 1984 graduate of Michigan State University and earned his Master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1989. This year he was named the 2013 NSCAA National Coach of the Year, ACC Coach of the Year, and VaSID State Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his career. Ms. Norbo earned her degree in Kinesiology from the Curry School of Education in 2013; she is from Roanoke, Virginia. Mr. Porco completed his tenth season on the staff of U.Va.’s Women’s Tennis program. Before joining U.Va., Coach Porco was an assistant coach at the University of Miami, head 3 coach at Florida International University (his alma mater), and the head coach at Auburn University where his team won the Southeast Conference Championship (SEC) and he was named the SEC Coach of the Year in 2002. He was named the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Assistant Coach of the Year for his contributions to U.Va.’s program Ms. Collins transferred to the University of Virginia in 2013 after she competed for the University of Florida that season. She played a key role in U.Va.’s success this year and, in addition to being named the 2014 ACC Tennis Tournament MVP, she also won 2014 NCAA Women’s Singles Championship, the first ever title for a U.Va. women’s player. She is a rising thirdyear in the College of Arts and Sciences and is from St. Petersburg, Florida. 4
