BOARD OF VISITORS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY
BOARD MEETING:
June 6, 2014
COMMITTEE:
Student Affairs and Athletics
AGENDA ITEM:
II.B. Report on Women’s Soccer and Women’s
Tennis
ACTION REQUIRED:
None
BACKGROUND: The 2013 Women’s Soccer season was the best in
school history with the team setting a school record of 24 wins,
78 goals, and 16 shutouts. The team earned the regular season
Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) title and received the program’s
first bid to the NCAA Women’s College Cup.
The recently concluded Women’s Tennis season was also the
best in school history. The team finished in a four-way tie for
the regular season ACC title, and subsequently won its first ACC
tournament title. The UVA women earned a #3 national seed in
the NCAA tournament, advanced to the quarterfinals for the first
time, finished with a program best record of 24-6, and rising
third-year student Danielle Collins won the NCAA Women’s Singles
championship.
DISCUSSION: Head Coach Steve Swanson and 2013 graduate Kate
Norbo will provide a report on the state of the soccer program.
Associate Head Coach Troy Porco and Danielle Collins will report
on the tennis program’s 2014 record-breaking season.
Mr. Swanson joined the U.Va. Women’s Soccer team as Head
Coach in 2000; prior to coming to U.Va. he held head coaching
positions at Dartmouth College and Stanford University. He is a
1984 graduate of Michigan State University and earned his
Master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1989. This year
he was named the 2013 NSCAA National Coach of the Year, ACC
Coach of the Year, and VaSID State Coach of the Year for the
seventh time in his career.
Ms. Norbo earned her degree in Kinesiology from the Curry
School of Education in 2013; she is from Roanoke, Virginia.
Mr. Porco completed his tenth season on the staff of
U.Va.’s Women’s Tennis program. Before joining U.Va., Coach
Porco was an assistant coach at the University of Miami, head
3
coach at Florida International University (his alma mater), and
the head coach at Auburn University where his team won the
Southeast Conference Championship (SEC) and he was named the SEC
Coach of the Year in 2002. He was named the 2014
Intercollegiate Tennis Association Assistant Coach of the Year
for his contributions to U.Va.’s program
Ms. Collins transferred to the University of Virginia in
2013 after she competed for the University of Florida that
season. She played a key role in U.Va.’s success this year and,
in addition to being named the 2014 ACC Tennis Tournament MVP,
she also won 2014 NCAA Women’s Singles Championship, the first
ever title for a U.Va. women’s player. She is a rising thirdyear in the College of Arts and Sciences and is from St.
Petersburg, Florida.
