Officer will report on the institutional approach to issues of
student safety beyond the Grounds. Strategies used to
communicate with and educate students about personal
responsibility and safety both on- and off-Grounds will be
reviewed.

Report on U.Va.’s Interdisciplinary
Approach to Alcohol Misuse Prevention
DISCUSSION: Dr. Jim Turner, Executive Director of the Elson
Student Health Center, and Ms. Jamie Leonard, Director of the
Office of Health Promotion at Student Health, will report on
ongoing research and new methodologies that have been adopted at
the University to mitigate abusive use of alcohol among
students. This presentation will address the current status of
drinking among U.Va. students in the context of comparable
national data. The institution’s approach to education and
intervention will be reviewed. Longitudinal assessment data
(e.g., randomized anonymous survey responses, Student Health
clinical data, and U.Va. Emergency Department statistics)
addressing alcohol use and behavior among students will be
reported.
Ms. Laura Long, a U.Va. Peer Health Educator, will discuss
ways in which students are provided with relevant information
that encourages self-reflection, safer decision making and
appropriate health care seeking behaviors. Ms. Long is a
fourth-year in the College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in
cognitive science with concentrations in neuroscience,
linguistics, and cognitive psychology and a minor in biology.
She is from Roanoke, Virginia.

ACTION REQUIRED:

DISCUSSION: Tony Bennett begins his third season as the men's
head basketball coach. He joined the University's staff after
three successful years as the head coach at Washington State
University. In 2007, Coach Bennett was selected the Naismith
Coach of the Year, he received the Henry Iba Award Coach of the
Year, and he also was the recipient of the AP Men's Basketball
Coach of the Year Award.
Director of Athletics, Craig Littlepage, will introduce
Coach Bennett who will speak about the progress that is being
made in building the men's basketball program.
