UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
BOARD OF VISITORS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY
BOARD MEETING:
November 15, 2010
COMMITTEE:
External Affairs
AGENDA ITEM:
II.
ACTION REQUIRED:
None
Vice President’s Remarks
DISCUSSION: Mr. Sweeney will provide updates on public affairs and
engagement efforts, annual giving, philanthropic cash flow, and
Campaign achievement, including future support, and he will report
on strategies for the last phase of the Campaign.
Philanthropic cash flow measures actual gifts received by the
University during a specific fiscal year. It includes cash or cash
equivalents received for philanthropic purposes; it does not
include pledges or future support (bequest expectancies, annuities,
etc.). Through September 30, 2010, cash flow stood at $37.45
million. This reflects a decrease of 3% from the same period in
FY-10 and a decrease of 1% from FY-09.
Through September 30, 2010, the Campaign stood at $2.215
billion, including $243.5 million in future support. This reflects
almost 74% in Campaign achievement in 84% of Campaign time elapsed.
Vital to the University’s campaign efforts is the ongoing plan to
introduce President Sullivan to alumni, prospects, and donors using
various approaches, including one-on-one meetings and alumni engagement
and media events. Mr. Sweeney will report on significant activity in
these areas.

NAMINGS REPORT
EXTERNAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
NOVEMBER 15, 2010
Namings Report
The following Namings do not require Board action; they are
enumerated below as a matter of record.
THE PORTERFIELD FAMILY KITCHEN
Gift of Bill and Linda Porterfield
(Baseball stadium interior space)
H. William Porterfield, M.D. (A&S ’50) and his wife Linda
Porterfield are loyal supporters of the University and its Athletic
programs. As avid sports fans, Bill and Linda attend almost all
football, basketball (men and women) and baseball events. The
Porterfield Family Kitchen is located in the University Baseball
stadium.
THE ARMSTRONG CENTER FOR ALUMNI CAREER SERVICES
Gift of Mr. William H. Goodwin Jr. (MBA ’66)
and fellow alumni of the Class of 1966
The Darden Alumni Career Center (ACS) has been named in honor
of Mr. Beverley W. “Booty” Armstrong (A&S ’64, MBA ’66), who was
the leader in its founding. The Center was developed with the
inspiration and vision of Mr. Armstrong, who was a Trustee and lead
donor at the time of its founding in 1998.
Mr. Armstrong has served as the Chairman of the ACS Advisory
Committee since the center’s inception. Mr. Armstrong is the Vice
Chairman of CCA Industries, a former member of the Darden School
Board of Trustees and a current member of the University of
Virginia Arts & Sciences Board of Trustees. He is the founder and
President of the Frances Campbell Foundation and the Sarah Hollins
Foundation.
The naming of The Armstrong Center for Alumni Career Services
in honor of Mr. Armstrong was made possible through generous
donations from William (MBA ’66) and Alice Goodwin, Richard (MBA
’66) and Nancy Higgerson, G. Gilmer Minor (MBA ’66), Matthew
Thompson (MBA ’66), Donald Wilkinson (MBA ’66), and many other
generous classmates.

LEIGH B. MIDDLEDITCH JR. HALL
(Honorary naming, Miller Center interior space)
This naming recognizes the extraordinary service of Leigh B.
Middleditch Jr. (A&S ’51, LAW ’57, DEX ’58) to the Miller Center of
Public Affairs and acknowledges his major philanthropic support to
the Center since its beginning. Mr. Middleditch and his wife,
Betty Lou, are longtime supporters of the University and its
programs, including Thomas C. Sorensen Institute for Political
Leadership, the Charlottesville and University
Symphony Orchestra, the School of Law, Alderman Library, the
Heritage Repertory Company, Madison House, University Art Museum,
and the Women's Center.
A lawyer by profession, Mr. Middleditch managed the legal work
that created the Miller Center Foundation in 1987. He became both
a member of the Miller Center's Governing Council and a director of
the Miller Center Foundation in spring 2000. Mr. Middleditch was
elected as the first chairman of the Miller Center Foundation on
October 27, 2000, and served continuously in that capacity until
June 30, 2010. As chairman, Mr. Middleditch presided over the
Foundation during the period of its greatest growth. Mr.
Middleditch is currently a co-chair of the $39.5 million Campaign
for the Miller Center.
Leigh B. Middleditch Jr. Hall is a wide hallway that connects
Faulkner House, the core of the Miller Center complex, to the
Center's Kenneth Thompson Pavilion. Since it was built in 2002,
the Hall has been used for seating and small receptions.
