Faculty Senate Presentation

Faculty Report
Joe Garofalo
Chair of the Faculty Senate
Board of Visitors Meeting
March 25, 2015
The Top Ten Reasons to Put a
Non-Voting Faculty Member on
the Board of Visitors
10. Maybe some faculty members
will finally learn how to tie a bowtie
properly
9. Faculty bring relevant
experiences with teaching,
mentoring, and scholarship to the
table
8. The faculty may actually gain
some insight into what L.D. is
short for, and why this light-haired
guy is known as “Rusty.”
7. A faculty member could predict
potential reactions to Board
decisions; we may see fewer
controversial newspaper articles.
6. It can be an effective way to keep
the lines of communication open
between the faculty and the board
5. Schmoozing can lead to dialogue
Frank: Back in Brooklyn, my grandmother made a big pot of
tomato sauce every Sunday
Joe: Hey paisan, my grandmother did the same in the Bronx!
Frank: By the way, what are the major concerns of the faculty?
Joe: Take a look at this report, then call me so we can talk
through it.
4. The UVA Faculty Senate may vote
to add a non-voting BOV member to
the Senate Executive Council.
3. It would trumpet nationally that
the UVA Board of Visitors is
genuinely interested
in hearing faculty
perspectives
2. Because you can; and you have
already done so for students!
1. We are all on the same team!
