Soil Degree-Day Accumula8on -- KBREC and IREC 2012
For Root-knot nematode control, Vydate applica8ons should begin at 800 degree-days (DD5C).
To es8mate that date, add the number of Total degree-days "Total" on the day you planted
to 800. Where that value occurs in the "Total" column es8mates the date on which 800 DD5C
will occur in that field. It is recommended that applica8ons con8nue every 14 days un8l harvest.
For Stubby-root nematode control, Vydate applica8ons should begin at 0 degree-days (at plan8ng)
and followed by an applica8on at the first full irriga8on following emergence. An addi8onal
applica8on is recommended at 800 degree-days (DD5C).

Brian’s Notes
Crop Water Use: Irrigation frequency has accelerated with the onset of hot weather. Proper irrigation during such hot weather is
critical to minimizing internal tuber disorders – namely hollow heart and brown center. Growth cracks and secondary growth can
also be problematic during such hot weather. Check fields regularly as scheduling is likely to be more frequent than past weeks.
Insect Trap Reports: Insect pressure remains relatively low. Aphid numbers in yellow pan traps increased this past week. Expect
numbers to increase in the weeks to come as we typically see population spikes during mid-late July.
Psyllids: We have not found potato psyllids yet this year. However, ‘other psyllids’ have been caught in yellow pan traps but at
very low number. Remember, only potato psyllids transmit Liberibacter, the causal agent, of zebra chip.
Soil Degree-Day Accumulation: Early planted potatoes (May 1) on muck soil reached the 800 degree-day (5C) about 4 days ago
while those planted in mid-May are about 3 days away. Early planted potatoes on mineral soil are about a week from reaching the
target. Remember, these values are derived from automated weather stations at KBREC and IREC and are likely different than
temperatures in your own potato field. To optimize timing it is best to use temperatures from you own field.
P-day Accumulation: Potatoes which emerged around May 15 are approaching 300 p-days and control measures from Early Blight
are advised for Russet Norkotah fields that are highly prone to infection. Potatoes that emerged around June 1 are about 2 weeks
away from reaching this target.
