THIRD GRADE GAZETTE

Dear Parents:
What a busy September we have
had! The students have now adjusted
to our daily routine and are working
enthusiastically.
Reading
Our reading focus for this month will
be primarily on informational (nonfiction) text. The following concepts
will guide our instruction:
 Recognizing text features
(bold print, captions, diagrams,
index, etc.)
 Making connections to describe
cause and effect relationships
 Identifying main idea and
supporting details
 Using context clues to
understand meanings of words
Math
We will be focusing on the
following concepts this month:





Composing and decomposing to
solve 1 and 2 step word
problems
Measuring area of figures
Representing equal groups
using multiplication
Relating multiplication and
addition
Using concrete models to
model multiplication equations
Encourage your child to read every
night and then ask questions about
his/her reading to see if your child
understands the story.
It is essential that the students be
competent in basic addition and
subtraction facts. Any help you can
give at home practicing with your child
will be very beneficial.

Language Arts/Writing
In the writing process, students
will be conducting short research
projects to write informational
paragraphs using facts, definitions
and details.
Later this month, we will be
writing opinion pieces on a given topic
with supporting reasons and a
concluding statement.
Science
We will continue with Physical Science
this month by:
 examining position and changes
in position of an object
 exploring and identifying
causes of change in the motion
of an object
 investigating how gravity
affects the motion of objects
Social Studies
Dress for the Weather!
Our social studies focus will be
Economics and Civics. We will be:
 describing the selection
process and duties of local
officials
 identifying and classifying
goods and services provided by
government and businesses
 examining information about
how people lived in the past
using a variety of resources
