Finding unknowns
Word problems
Relating area to multiplication
Please remember to help your child by
having him/her practice
multiplication/division facts every night.
Homework folders
Please check your child’s folder
regularly. Keep all graded papers at home
(unless stated otherwise). Make sure
your child returns the papers to school if
they are placed on the “return to school”
side. Encourage your child to be
responsible about completing and turning
in his or her homework on time. It is
always a good idea to check over your
child’s work to reinforce any teaching
we’ve done in class.
Reading
Our reading focus for December
will be split between literary text and
informational text. The literary topic
will be plays and their structure.
Concepts that will guide our
instruction will be:
 Central message in a play
 Character’s actions influencing
events
 Main idea and supporting details
 Text features
Interims
If your child receives an interim (will
be sent week of Dec. 8th), please
discuss it with him/her, sign it and return
to the homeroom teacher.
As a supporting activity that relates
to our studies in reading and science,
we will be making candy houses in the
All Purpose Room on Friday,
December 18th. This aligns with
learning about the characteristics of
plays and observing changes to
physical properties of materials.
Parent volunteers are needed to help
with this class activity.
Math
We will continue to study
multiplication and division which will lead
into using multiplication to find area of
rectangles. Specific concepts covered will
be:
 Fact fluency
 Modeling equations

Social Studies
In social studies, our focus for this
marking period is geographical regions and
characteristics. The following concepts
will be included:
 Natural/physical and human-made
features of the world
 People modifying and adapting to
the environment
 Changes of technology over time
Writing
We will continue to develop our
writing skills in both narrative and
informational writing. Skills covered
will be:
 Sequencing events
 Developing a topic with facts and
details
 Connecting ideas using linking
words
 Organizing/researching facts,
definitions, and details to develop
ideas
Science
In science we are studying
temperature’s effects on physical
properties of materials, and technology
used to create products.
Students will learn about observable
properties of materials and how heat
effects matter.
We will continue language and grammar
skills in our classes, and will be focusing
on the proper use of verbs and adjectives
in our writing this month.
