THIRD GRADE GAZETTE Miss Lozinsky, Mrs. Rauf and Mrs. Sheahin March 2016 Parent Night A parent meeting will be held after school on Tuesday, March 15th, at 3:45 to discuss the upcoming third grade play. We hope to see many of you there! Students should be practicing their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts at home daily. Play tryouts began this week during recess for all interested students. Every student who tries out will receive a part in the upcoming play. All third graders will be participating in the chorus. Reading In March, our reading focus has been on historical fiction and literary nonfiction. Our reading objectives are: Distinguishing literal from non-literal language Comparing and contrasting the themes, setting, and plots of stories written by the same author Recounting details in a text to determine the central message Math We will complete our unit on fractions at the end of the month. We have been working on: Recognizing and generating simple equivalent fractions Expressing whole numbers as fractions Comparing fractions by reasoning about their size, and using what we know about fractions to answer deep thinking questions 1 in the APR at 2:00 on the 22nd. Please feel free to stop by and see their wonderful work! Language Arts/Writing We will be developing opinion writing skills this month and continuing with narrative writing. Skills covered will be: Narrative writing to develop real or imagined events Use dialogue to describe actions Use technology to produce and publish writing pieces Science Language instruction will focus on adjectives, adverbs, commas, quotation marks and dialogue. Identify and describe ways in which heat can be produced Define friction and identify examples of heat produced through friction Explore how electricity is used to produce light energy Social Studies In social studies, our focus this month includes: Exploring different types of maps and their purpose Using texts to compare the elements of several cultures Upcoming Events: 3/15 – Play Parent Meeting 3/18 – International Night Students have been assigned a comprehensive Map project due March 22nd. A letter was sent home to parents explaining the project in detail. All 3rd graders will be presenting their maps 3/22 – Map project presentation 3/24 – No school (Professional Day) 3/25 – 4/1 – Spring Break 2
