Dear 2nd Grade Parents,
Welcome to our second grade team! We are looking forward to working
with your children throughout the school year. We plan to work as a team to
support your child’s strengths and abilities as they grow and learn this school year.
It should be a very exciting year for all of us!
At the beginning of each month the second grade team will be sending home a
newsletter that includes an overview of what will be going on in our classrooms
that month.
A vital communication link between parents and teachers is your child’s take home
folder. Please check this each day and return it to your child’s backpack. We will
also be sending home graded work and assessments in the take home folder.
Please remove and review the graded work with your child each week.
If your child will be buying lunch, please send money in a
small wallet or envelope with your child’s name and
teacher’s name on it. Lunch with milk is $2.55. If your child
wants milk only, the cost will be 60 cents. Please note that
we will not be having snack time this year. Please feel free
to contact the second grade team with anything else you
might be concerned about. You can contact by calling the
school, emailing us, or writing a note. Together we can make this a positive and
successful school year for your child!
Reading: Each day your child will be reading in a small group for
guided reading. When your child’s group completes a story, the
reading teacher may send a book home in your child’s backpack.
Please be sure to read the story with your child and send the book
back to school the next day.
Comprehension strategy: During the first marking period we will
be learning how to ask questions about the texts we are reading.
We will also be learning the different parts of a story including characters, setting,
problem, solution and events. We will also be learning about text features in nonfiction texts. Please have your child read for 20 minutes every night.
Math: In math, homework assignments will be sent home on a
daily basis to support the objectives covered in class. We are
currently working on the place value of 3 digit numbers. This
year we will be focusing on basic addition and subtraction facts
from 0-20. We will be sending home weekly practice exercises
and strategies for your child to practice with.
Science: The first science unit is Earth Space Science. Your child will be taking a
hands-on-approach to learn about rocks, soil and water.
Social Studies: We will begin by learning about rules and laws and how they serve
to keep us safe and protect society. We will also be creating classroom rules and
determining goals that will help us to work collaboratively as a class.
Important Upcoming Events: Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday,
September 9th and will start at 7pm. Monday, September 14th and Wednesday
September 24th there is no school.
