Grade 2 Oct 2015

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,
Our school year is off to a great start. Thank you to all the parents who came to Back to School
Night. So far we are pleased with the success of the assignment books and take home folders.
We feel that this is a great way for our second graders to keep organized. Please be sure to
check the homework folder each night and return homework journals on Friday. Below is a
summary of what we are currently working on in each subject area.
Reading: Students will be learning about text features in nonfiction texts. They will be learning how to use the table of contents
and the index to help them locate information in a text. They will
also discover how labels, captions, pictures and bold words help
them to better understand the information they are reading about
in the text. Students will also use this knowledge to construct their
own nutrition book that will include many of the text features
they are learning about. In addition, the children are learning
through teacher modeling, and practice, how to answer written
questions using details in the text to support their reasoning.
Books and Beyond: Please make sure that your child is reading 20
minutes every night for reading homework. The PTA has also started
the Books and Beyond program. This is a great program that provides
students with goals that they can achieve and fun rewards for
reading every night. At the end of the program there will be a
celebration party for all participants who complete the program.
Math: We are working towards learning many
skills such as: place value, counting from 1-100/1-1000, greater than,
less than and equal to, what numbers come before, after and in
between, even and odd and reading and writing numbers. Next we will
begin learning how to collect, display and interpret data using bar graphs
and pictographs. Thank you for all the support you have been providing
in helping your child learn basic fact strategies. We will continue to provide a new strategy
every two weeks. Please continue to work closely with your child to help them achieve their
goals.
Science: We are currently continuing our study of earth
materials such as soil and water! Students are being given
many hands on opportunities to explore these materials.
Social Studies: Students will
continue learning about political
systems in action. So far students
have been learning about rules and laws in our community. They
have also been exploring the rights and responsibilities of citizens
and how it’s important for citizens to obey rules and laws. Some of
the important features of this unit will include rules in a democracy,
citizens and government leaders, and choosing government
leaders.
Halloween: Each 2nd grade class will be having a Halloween party
on Friday October 31st. The whole school parade will begin around
2:00. If you would like to volunteer at the party please contact
your child’s teacher. Please note that all goodies supplied at the
party must be store bought. No home baked goods are allowed
due to allergies. Thank you for all your help and understanding.
We hope to see you there!
Upcoming Events: A reminder that there is no school on Friday, Oct.
16th and Monday November 2nd. October 12th is Open House and we
invite you to spend time in your student’s class. Parent conferences
are November 11th and 12th. These are early release days for
students. If you haven’t already, please be sure to sign up for a time
and day that fits your schedule. We will be sending notes home in
the next few weeks with your scheduled date and time.
Sincerely,
The Second Grade Team
