December 2015

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,
Thank you all for all the support and help you have provided us. We really couldn’t do this
without you!!
Reading: Recently students have been learning about the characteristics
of folktales and fables. We will be reading Cinderella stories from around
the world. Students will compare and contrast the different versions of
Cinderella. In addition, students will be learning about the lessons or morals
that fables teach. Students will be analyzing these short stories and using
characters’ words and actions to determine the lesson in a story. When we
return from winter break we will be learning about asking answering
questions in non-fiction texts.
Writer’s Workshop: In writing, students are currently working on creating
their own version of popular folktales using different settings. As we craft
our narrative we will be focusing on word choice and sentence fluency. This
will help students to add details and enrich the content of their stories.
Math: Students have been working hard to learn about addition with
composing and subtraction with decomposing. Please continue to work on
basic addition and subtraction facts over the winter break. When we
come back we will be learning about money. This will include coins to $1
and bills up to $100. We will also focus on addition and subtraction
situations involving money.
Upcoming Events: There will be no school December 24th- January 3rd.
Have a safe and happy holidays!
Sincerely,
The Second Grade Team
