Gr 2 Jan 2016

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,
Welcome back to a new year, 2016! We are so excited to begin the New Year
with your children. As a reminder, please be sure to check your child’s take home
folder and backpack daily. Also, to begin the New Year off “write”, please make sure
your child has enough pencils to get them through the rest of the year.
Reading: This month, students will be reading informational
texts. We will work on synthesizing key details in text in order
to determine the author’s purpose and main idea.
Writer’s Workshop: Students will continue writing a new
version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Students are
exploring how changes in setting effect the other elements of a
story.
Math: Students are learning how to add and subtract 2 digit
numbers using their knowledge of place value and the relationship
between addition and subtraction. Students have developed
understanding with concrete representations and are now
showing their thinking with more abstract written methods.
Science: In science we are continuing to analyze the smaller
parts of a whole.
Upcoming Events: There will be no school
for students Monday, January 18th for
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There will also
be no school on Monday, January 25th
because of the professional day for teachers. The 2nd marking
period will officially end on January 22nd. Report cards will be
going home Wednesday, February 3rd. There will be a 2nd grade
field trip to Imagination Stage Wednesday, February 3rd as well.
Sincerely,
The Second Grade Team
