February 2016

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,
We have successfully completed the first half of the school year!! A BIG THANK
YOU to all of the parents who have helped make the first half of the year a success.
We are grateful for all your support.
Reading: We are currently working on developing reading
comprehension strategies. Students are learning to ask clarifying
questions and make inferences while reading. We are also learning
the difference between “thin questions” and “thick questions.” Thin
questions have simple straight forward answers, while thick
questions require more critical thinking to answer. Students will also
be focusing on vocabulary strategies that help them understand and learn new words.
Writing: During the 3rd quarter the students will be learning how to
support their opinions using reasoning and supports. We will begin by
understanding what an opinion is and then move on to how opinions
are expressed. Students will then make claims and support them using
facts.
Math: We have begun learning all about measurement. We
are studying inches, feet, centimeters and meters. In the
upcoming weeks students will be learning how to solve
multistep addition and subtraction problems. We will also be
learning how to tell time. Please continue to have your child
practice his or her basic addition and subtraction facts at
home.
Science: In science we are currently learning about the sun, stars
and the moon.
Upcoming Events: This year’s Valentine’s Day party will be held on
Friday, February 12th at 2:15. Class lists will be sent home by each
teacher. Schools will be closed Monday, February 15th. February 26
is an Early Release Day.
Sincerely,
The 2nd Grade Team
