2nd Grade April Newsletter Dear 2nd Grade Parents, The 4th quarter is about to begin and we are all excited about the great learning experiences that we have planned for this spring! Reading: During the fourth quarter students will be learning about the characteristics of poetry. We will be reading poems with alliteration, repetition, similes, sensory images, and metaphors. We will also be introducing students to historical fiction. Our lessons about “reading to be informed” will focus directly on the meaning of words/phrases, text features and the connection between historical events. Math: Our next unit involves exploring 3-digit addition and subtraction. Students will be learning how to solve problems by composing and decomposing tens and hundreds. Please continue to have your child practice basic addition and subtraction facts using the resources that are sent home weekly. Science: We will begin our very exciting unit on butterflies this month. We will be taking a hands-on approach to learn about the life cycle of the butterfly. We will follow the life cycle through study of real living caterpillars and watch the metamorphosis into a butterfly. We will also have a butterfly release party in May. Social Studies: Students will be working on identifying important events in their life and using the information gathered to create a personal timeline that highlights these important life experiences. Students will also be examining biographies to compare the accomplishments of individuals long ago with their own personal accomplishments. Notes and upcoming events: Picture day is Thursday, April 14th. There will be no school Tuesday, April 26th due to the Primary Election. Sincerely, The Second Grade Team
