First Grade April Newsletter Reading The students will learn the following: use illustrations and details to describe characters, setting, or events make real-life connections between words and their use identify words or phrases in a poem that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses Compare and contrast experiences of characters using resources to produce a good Compare and contrast the experiences and adventures of characters Use root words and inflectional forms of verbs in a unique way Use words that signal simple relationships to distinguish shades of meaning between verbs Distinguish between information provided by illustrations and information provided by the words in a text Identify sources and uses of electricity Explain major differences between texts that tell stories and texts that give information Ask and answer questions about key details in a text Sort words into categories to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent Identify basic similarities and differences between two texts on the same topic Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase Writing Math The 4th marking period includes: Students will continue to: Narrative Writing: The students will recount two or more sequenced events that will include details, temporal words and a sense of closure. Process, Production & Research: The students will be asked to recall information from experiences or to gather information from provided sources to answer a question. Use of Language: The students will write descriptions of people, places, things and events with relevant details, while expending ideas and feelings. The students will clarify ideas, thoughts and feelings. The students will use a variety of personal, possessive and indefinite pronouns and frequently occurring adjectives will be encouraged. The students will continue with spelling conventions and phonemic awareness skills. Work on adding and subtracting 2digit numbers Show their work by using many different strategies and manipulatives. Explain place value and the difference between tens and ones while they are working with the 2-digit numbers and their equations. Dates: Social Studies Science -Earth and Space Economics: The students will learn the following: identify natural and human resources and how they are used in production give examples of human and natural resources used in a production process give examples of human, natural, and capital resources used to produce a good describe how different resources are used to make a good create a ‘good’ made from natural resources and recyclable materials describe how a resource is used in the production of goods give examples of resources used in the production of pancakes Identify how natural resources are gathered and used identify how communities provide ‘goods’ and ‘services’ describe how tools and products affect the way people, live, work and play identify how technology has changed the way we live, work, and play identify and describe the economic choices people make about ‘goods’ identify people who provide health care services available in schools locate, identify, and describe health care services provided in school describe the goods and services provided by a single business in the community select and describe a good or service to add to their community design identify how technology affects the way people work -Electricity We will focus on: How do human actions help/harm the environment? Students will recognize that caring about the environment is an important human activity. Students will learn how do humans use natural resources in daily life. Students will list what happens to trash when we throw it away. The class will be asked to identify and list the sources and uses of electricity in daily life. Students will create an original graphic organizer to record facts about electricity. 4/8 – End of marking period 3 4/19 – Science Expo 6:45 PM 4/20 – Science Expo 9:00 AM 4/22 – Report cards go home 4/25 - First grade parent night – please bring your child. 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM 4/26 – Holiday 4/28 – Take Your Child To Work Day
