Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are into our third marking period as we begin February! Some excit-
ing things are happening this month in 4th grade!
We are requesting that each student donate $5 to the party-fund so
that we can provide snacks, juice, prizes, and crafts for the Valentine’s Day
party. You should have received a list of all without excluding anyone.

Reading
During the month of February, we will be exploring the genre
of drama and plays. Students will explore the elements of plays while
they read and act out several works of drama in the classroom. After
we finish drama, we will explore the William & Mary texts and discuss
the concept of change. This gives students an opportunity to explore a
more intriguing type of literature and to discuss an important universal
theme.
In late February, we will begin studying biographies and autobiographies. While students explore the structure and important elements of these texts they will also learn about influential AfricanAmericans in observance of Black History Month.
Writing
Third quarter focuses on writing to persuade. In
February we will begin our study of writing to persuade. Students will have an opportunity to practice
persuasive writing in many different contexts.
Social Studies
In Social Studies students will use a timeline
to show United States history in terms of the four waves of immigration.
Students will compare each of the four waves by discussing where immigrants came from and why they chose to come to the United States. Students will record social, economic, and political factors in migrating and
determine how those factors affected the culture development of migrants.
Science
In Science we will be identifying and studying the three
states of matter; solid, liquid, and gas. We will explore the characteristics of
each type of matter, as well as how matter is able to change from one state to
another state and back again. Ask your child to explain how this change occurs.
4th Grade Math
We are almost finished with our study of Unit 3! Students will be assessed on their knowledge of common fractions, decimal fractions, and probability in mid-February. Keep an eye out for a review packet that you could use
to help your child in preparation!
Once we begin Unit 4, we will be diving into two– or three-digit multiplication, division with remainders, and elapsed time. One way to help your student get a head start on this is to help them learn how to read an analog
clock and ask questions like “How much time has passed since we

5th Grade Math
We are completing Unit 3 in the next two weeks. The Unit Assessment will cover
multiplication and division of whole numbers. Students will also demonstrate their
knowledge of fractions, percent, and decimals, and how they are related to each other.
Unit 4 covers data and statistics. The students will be learning various ways to collect
and organize data. They will be creating line graphs, and choosing appropriate graphs
for given situations. We will also be learning about Measures of Central Tendency.
