Welcome to Third Grade at Waters Landing Elementary School! We hope you
had a wonderful summer! The 3rd grade team is very excited to have you back for another wonderful year!
Each month you will be receiving a newsletter in which the third grade team will inform you of important dates
and upcoming events. We will also give you a summary of what your child will be learning in each subject during the
month. Attached to the back of each newsletter you will also find an overview of instruction in each subject area for
the quarter. This overview comes directly from our curriculum and gives a weekly description of what we will be studying in class.
This year, your children will continue to be instructed using Curriculum 2.0, the same curriculum used last year
in 2nd grade. We are excited to be using this curriculum, as concepts are more intertwined across subject areas, and
there is a greater opportunity to dive deeper into concepts to enhance student understanding. We hope you will
attend Back to School Night on September 10th for more information.
Standards Based Grading Reminders
Here is a reminder of our standards based grading rubric:
ES: Exceeds Standard: The student demonstrates an exceptional
understanding of on-grade-level content.
P: Proficient: The student demonstrates proficiency of the content
of processes
I: In Progress: The student is in progress towards meeting the
standard
N: Not Yet: The student is not yet making progress or is making minimal progress towards meeting the standard.
Students will also be assessed on the two Thinking and Academic
Success Skills (TASS) that are addressed each quarter. During the
first quarter, we will be focusing on the skills of collaboration
(working in a group in a positive manner to achieve a goal) and
analysis (breaking down a whole into parts that may not be immediately obvious and examining the parts so that the structure
of the whole is understood). Look for more information to come
about this process during Back to School Night!

Science and Social Studies
In science, we will
be describing the position and movement of several different objects. Students
will collaborate to analyze the factors that affect motion and will begin to explore the basics of the engineering design process.
In social studies, we will explore what it
means to be a good citizen. Then, we will explore the role individuals
and groups have in contributing to the common good. Students will
also have an opportunity to explore the role of the government and
begin studying the foundations of democracy in the Roman Republic.
Writing
In writing, students will be working on composing a personal narrative about a time that they helped others. They will have an opportunity
to develop this text and then share it with their peers. Toward the end of
the month, students will begin learning the research process for composing an informative text about how other people contribute to the common
good.
