Math and Science with Ms. Lentz and Mr. Poole
In Math, we are working on this Essential Question, “How does understanding
place value help in rounding multi-digit whole numbers?” Students are using individually-generated number lines to assist them in rounding multi-digit numbers
to the tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, and hundred-thousands place.
If you would like to know more about this strategy, please contact one of us, we’ll
be happy to show you how it’s done. Beginning sometime next week, we’ll begin
building fluency with the standard algorithms in addition and subtraction in the
context of solving multi-step word problems. Our unit will end with an exploration of word problems that use multiplicative comparisons. Please review the
Fourth Grade Mathematics Newsletter, Marking Period 1, Part 2 for additional
information.
In Science, our eco-columns are constructed and we are continuing to have hands
-on experience with classification of organisms by observable features and
behaviors. Your children will start using terms such as producer, consumer, and decomposer as they investigate the interactions between various organisms and identify sources of energy required by these organisms to grow and survive.
Data Binders and Halloween
Halloween is now less than one month away! We are looking for volunteers to serve as Room
Parents to organize activities for the afternoon classroom parties in each classroom. If you
would like to make a donation toward refreshments for the party, we are suggesting a two-dollar
donation. Teachers will survey students and use their input to purchase snacks for the party.
Contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you are interested in helping out with the party. Of
course, everyone is welcome to visit!
Data binders are still in the construction phase, and will be even more complete by ParentTeacher conferences. This week however, Student Progress Reports and a guide to reading
them are included in the front of the binder. Please review the interim and sign it so indicate
that its been reviewed. Of course, if you have any questions, please contact us! We look forward to using these resources in our meetings with you in November!

Reading and Social Studies with Mrs. Beard &
Students are reading about Native American societies in Maryland before
the establishment of the 13 colonies. They are comparing the ways the various groups used the natural environment for food, shelter and clothing.
Students are using common, grade-appropriate affixes and roots as clues to
the meanings of words. They are learning to paraphrase portions of a text
read aloud or information presented in diverse media including visually and
orally. Students are still reading historical fiction in their reading groups in
class. Remind your child to do his/her “Read At Home” each night and
bring in the character analysis form on Mondays. Starting in October, students will participate in a Pizza Hut reading contest. Each month that they
do all of the “Read At Homes”, they will receive a coupon for a personal
pan pizza. Very exciting!!
Parent-Teacher Conferences November 11th and November 12th
It’s seems hard to believe but Parent –Teacher Conferences are right around the corner.
Although they are scheduled for Nov. 11th & 12th, they may be scheduled for other days
and times that better fit your schedule. So if you have not already signed up for a time,
or if the time you requested is no longer possible, please contact your child’s homeroom
teacher. We are eager to meet you and discuss your child’s progress this year.
