May June

Fifth Grade Times
PARCC Testing
Students will be taking the PARCC assessment in May. They
have 3 days of reading testing and 4 days of math testing.
Please help students be successful on these important assessments by encouraging your child to take it seriously and use
his/her BEST effort, encourage him/her to get a good night’s
sleep each evening, and arrive at school by 9:25. Thank you!
Upcoming Events!!!
The end of the year is a busy time for 5th grade. We will continue learning important academic content and participate in
many fun events. Please see the “Important Dates” section for
further information! We will also be helping students prepare
for middle school by setting firm expectations for homework
and classwork completion, and behavior. Please support the
school by ensuring that your child completes all of their work
satisfactorily, and is meeting Goshen’s behavior expectations!

Curriculum 2.0 Skills
Students will focus on evaluation (weighing evidence, examining claims, and questioning facts to
make judgments) and effort/motivation/persistence (working diligently and applying effective
strategies to achieve a goal or solve a problem and continuing in the face of obstacles). The
ability to use effort and self-motivation to complete work, and persistence to complete tasks
despite challenges, are key skills to practice before middle school.
Inquiry Project and Information Literacy (Media)
Grade 5 students have been recording information that answers the two inquiry driving questions: Which factors will have the strongest impact on determining the occupations that will
exist in 15 – 20 years? In what ways does the ability to apply thinking and academic success
skills determine the success of workers in 15-20 years? They have used websites and information from guest speakers within chosen career fields to evaluate how careers may change in
the future. Students will then create a multi media presentation showcasing what they have
learned about their chosen occupation.
Science
Students will continue to study cells as part of our
life science unit. They will study heredity and
DNA, and determine how traits are passed from
parents to children in animals and plants. In addition, students will examine how plants can be genetically modified to produce a different result,
and how humans have influenced these changes
with both positive and negative results.
Writing
Students will draft an opinion piece explaining
their selected career, and why they believe that
career will or will not be in existence in 15-20
years. They will then write a letter of advice
about their time in 5th grade. They will detail
when they need to use effort, motivation, and persistence to accomplish goals. This reflection will
help the students get ready for their promotion,
and their transition to middle school.
Social Studies
Students will continue to study financial decisions.
They will determine the advantages of saving and
investing and evaluate the positives and negatives
of loans and credit. They will then discover the
realities of financial obligations and how to use
money wisely, including donations to charitable organizations.
Instrumental Music
Our spring concert is Tuesday, May 24th The
concert will be held at Goshen ES in the gym at
7:00 pm. This concert will feature our beginning
and advanced band and string players, and our Chorus. All performing students should arrive by 6:40
pm wearing their concert black and white. We
have been working very hard for this concert and
hope you will attend!
PE
In Physical Education, students have just finished
learning the forehand and backhand stroke. To
end the year they will learn the fundamentals of a
golf swing. Additionally, they will learn the four
key components of the FITT principle which include frequency, intensity, time and type of exercise.
Reading
Students will continue to read informational texts on bats for the beginning of
May. They will integrate information from
several sources to answer questions about
bats. Students will then begin to study
literature, specifically plays, and will summarize and determine the point of view of
the characters. Students will end the
marking period by reading and analyzing
poetry. In addition to these lessons, students will be responsible for reading a
novel at their level, and answering questions about that novel in literature circles.
Math
Students will study geometry for the remainder of the marking period. They will
graph points on a coordinate grid, complete patterns and examine relationships
between patterns, classify and sort polygons, particularly quadrilaterals, by their
attributes, and think critically about how
geometric concepts can help solve problems.
Art
In May, Fifth graders will begin a new
sculpture project! We will be using plaster and face molds to create a mask,
which we will paint following a chosen
theme. We will also work on a painting
project using lines, shapes, and colors to
create a non-objective symmetrical painting. Hope to see you at our Art Show on
May 19th!
Music
Fifth Grade students have been working
on composing their own music. We will also continue to work on using solfege to
read music.
