Fall Festival Week
This year we will again be celebrating Fall Harvest for an entire week!
The events will include spirit days where students will dress in a different color every day, and participate in activities such as listening
to a fall themed book, creating a piece of work to be displayed on the
bulletin board, taking a gallery walk to view other bulletin boards in
the school, buddy reading with other students in 5th grade, and participating in a Fall Festival party.
Curriculum 2.0
The 5th grade students will continue working on the skills of
flexibility and collaboration for the remainder of this Marking Period.
Please encourage your child to use flexible thinking by being willing to
change their ideas and show what they know in multiple ways, particularly when they are collaborating with other students in the class.
Homework
Students will continue to receive homework nightly. They are
expected to read 30 minutes per night and collect a parent’s signature, complete 6 spelling activities in 2 weeks, and complete math
homework as it is assigned. Students should also be practicing their
basic facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) each
evening. Please encourage your child to memorize all of their facts!
Thank you for your support!

Inquiry Project
Students will complete their
analysis of an energy source.
They will then determine
which energy source is the
most efficient, and justify
their decision. Each student
will create an original PowerPoint presentation on the
computer sharing knowledge
about an energy source. They
will also take what they have
learned in science about
force and motion, and collaboratively design an original
amusement park ride. Ask
your child about this project
as they develop
their ideas!
Math
Reading
In October, students will work with decimals. They will read decimals appropriately, write
decimals in expanded form, recognize relationships between place values within decimals as
powers of 10, compare and order decimals, and
add and subtract decimals. They will also begin
working with division at the end of the month,
and will be encouraged to use multiple strategies
to divide large numbers.
Students will continue to look at figurative language
in tall tales and further their study of literature by
reading a novel and discussing aspects of the novel
in literature circles. Students will begin analyzing
informational texts by finding key details, summarizing, and making inferences. They also work with
content vocabulary words by using strategies to
make meaning from the word.

Information Literacy (Media)
Students will use the information they have
gathered during the note taking process to produce a PowerPoint presentation. The presentation will include information about the cost, availability, and logistics of their energy source, and
it’s impact on the environment. The presentation
will also include graphics, and citations to show
where students found their visual representations.
Music
Fifth grade is learning about the blues in preparation for our field trip to Strathmore. We will also
focus on appropriate audience behavior. In the next
few weeks students will be writing their own blues
lyrics and putting them to music. Students will continue to work on creating chords to accompany songs
and will begin to work on conducting.
