Welcome Back to School!



We will start our year off reading literary text.
Students will work together to ask and answer
questions about what they have read. We will
work on identifying story elements such as:
character, setting, story events, problem and
solution. We will practice speaking and listening
to enhance our collaborative skills.
What a delightful and hardworking bunch
of second graders we have this year! It
was nice to meet so many of our second
grade families at Back to School Night!
Soon we will start our MClass testing. We will be
testing individual students on reading and
comprehension to be able to teach them on their
appropriate reading level.
Each month you will receive a Newsletter
to inform you of upcoming events,
projects, and units of study that will be
going on in our classrooms. Please see
below for our unifying question as we
begin to work our way through Curriculum
2.0.
After our testing wraps up we will begin our
guided reading groups! Have your child tell you
about what they are reading in school! And
please remember to have your child read, read,
READ at home! 
Reminders

READING
Please make sure to return Emergency
Contact forms as well as any other forms
that were sent home the first week of
school.
Your child should be reading for 15
minutes each night. Books may be reread
to increase fluency and reinforce key
vocabulary.
For extra practice in writing, have your
child start a journal. Set aside a time
before bed to have your child write about
the events of the day. Be sure to remind
your child to add details and edit their
writing. An added challenge would be to
revise for new and interesting beginnings
and words.
If you send lunch money, please put it in
an envelope with the child’s name and
pin #.
Writing
Students are working on their first personal
narrative which is a story that tells about an event
in their own personal life. Our students have
chosen a topic and have begun writing. We will
be going through the writing process (please see
steps below) in order to create detailed
paragraphs.
The Writing Process includes…
prewriting/planning
drafting
revising
editing
publishing
presenting
You can help at home by discussing how “good
writers” continually revise their writing to make it
better.
Math
We will start math building a strong number
sense by extending counting patterns with
numbers 1-1,000. We will use manipulatives
such as base ten blocks to compose 2-digit and
3-digit numbers. We will compare numbers, digit
position and value, word name representation
and expanded notation.

To support your child’s learning of place value
at home, please use the website
www.abcya.com ! When on the website select
second grade, then scroll down to the place
value games. There are many to choose from!
We also need assistance in helping your child
practice addition and subtractions basic facts.
We will be sending home flash card packets
assist in practicing facts at home. A good
website to support the fluency of basic facts is
www.mathisfun.com.
Science
In Marking Period 1, we will investigate the
Earth’s natural resources starting with properties
of rocks and soil. We will later go on to study the
make-up of the Earth’s surface and properties
of water.

Social Studies
First we will be begin our study of Civic
Responsibilities. We will start by setting up a
classroom culture where students and teachers
work together to write a mission statement
based on who we are and why we are here,
what we will have to do well together, and how
we will make that happen. We will determine
and agree upon Ground Rules to help us know
how we can meet those expectations.
UNIFYING QUESTION: How does
demonstrating effective teamwork
help you learn?
Thank you……
We really appreciate all that you are
doing for our students and are looking
forward to a wonderful school year!
