THE FIRST GRADE SCOOP September 21-25, 2015 First Grade’s Weekly Newsletter Reading We will listen to a Junior Great Book story Chestnut Pudding and ask and answer questions about key details. This story is an Iroquois folktale that provides many opportunities for discussion. Writing We will add detailed drawings to our stories and include an ending sentence to provide closure. We will discuss nouns and identify proper nouns by using capital letters. Math Students will continue our study of place value by looking at patterns on a 120 chart. We will work on 10 more, ten less and comparing numbers. Riddles will help making identifying numbers a challenge! Social Studies We will be learning about leaders and their role in our families, our school and our community. Science We will discuss how living things have specific features and behaviors that help them survive. Teacher’s Corner Our reading groups will be starting (two started on Friday!) and books will be sent home with the response journal. You may look at the word work or read the question your child has answered in their journal. All work in the journal will be done at school. Remember the zip lock with the book and journal must come to school each day even if you have not had time to read it. We work in it most days. (On Mondays, we do our word sort work.) Students who meet with Mrs. Bencal have a reading folder that will be coming home. Other reminders: Remember to send in a snack! Check your child’s behavior calendar each day. Please reinforce our behavior rules. Blues and greens are great! Yellow is a warning. Please remind your child to bring his/her green folder back each day.
