#HRONICLEåOFå3CHOLARLYå!CTIVITY Mission Statement The mission of Campbell University is to graduate students with exemplary academic and professional skills who are prepared for purposeful lives and meaningful service. The University is informed and inspired by its Baptist heritage and three basic theological and biblical presuppositions: learning is appointed and conserved by God as essential to the fulfillment of human destiny; in Christ all things consist and find ultimate unity; and the Kingdom of God in this world is rooted and grounded in Christian community. The University embraces the conviction that there is no conflict between the life of faith and the life of inquiry. To fulfill its mission, the University: • presents a worldview informed by Christian principles and perspectives; • affirms that truth is revelatory and transcendent as well as empirical and rational, and that all truth finds its unity in Jesus Christ; • influences development of moral courage, social sensitivity, and ethical responsibility; • gathers a diverse community of learners; • delivers academic instruction in the liberal arts and sciences and professional preparation at both undergraduate and graduate levels; • transfers to students the vast body of knowledge and values accumulated over the ages; • encourages students to think critically and creatively; • fosters the development of intellectual vitality, physical wellness, and aesthetic sensibility; • forges a community of learning that is committed to the pursuit, discovery, and dissemination of knowledge; • provides students with servant leadership opportunities; • cooperates with other educational institutions to expand learning opportunities for students; • offers service and other opportunities to the greater community through athletics, continuing education, cultural enrichment programming, and extended-campus education. Jerry M. Wallace President Campbell Produces Clinical Research Materials By Susan Welch, Staff Writer t has taken some time, but Campbell University’s I Pharmaceutical Sciences Institute (CUPSI) housed in the School of Pharmacy Research Facility is now qualified to produce clinical trial materials for clinical investigations. Dr. William Stagner, director of CUPSI, announced that Duke University was the first client for CUPSI to manufacture material for use in human subjects. “To be able to work with such a reputable and distinguished organization as Duke University Medical Center our first time out just reinforces Campbell’s credibility and place in the Pharmaceutical Sciences community,” Stagner said. “It is an outstanding recognition of our program and what we are trying to accomplish.” education and research for the Pharmacy School and the greater university and potentially the community. The School of Pharmacy Research Facility and CUPSI at Campbell were the vision of Dr. Emanuel Diliberto, professor and chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. “Dr. Diliberto was keenly aware of the shortage of personnel in the health care industry and pushed for the creation of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Clinical Research programs at Campbell,” Stagner said. “Thanks to his vision and the support of Dean Ronald Maddox, we now have two uniquely positioned academic programs and GMP capabilities that support the drug development process. The Pharmacy Research Facility was dedicated on November 9, 2001. This facility was built to provide an interface between industry and academia for the enhancement of the School of Pharmacy’s unique educational programs, the development of its faculty, and to be a valuable resource for pharmaceutical development. Campbell began seeking FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approval to develop drug delivery systems and to manufacture supplies for human clinical studies soon after the construction of the state-of-the-art 7,000 square-foot facility. In 2005, Dr. Stagner and Dr. Mali Gupta, associate professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, were hired to join the CUPSI Management Team and begin in earnest the FDA qualification process for CUSPI and the research facility. “It’s been a very arduous process, but we have recently qualified the Institute for the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements that are regulated through the FDA,” Stagner said. “Being GMP qualified allows us to make oral liquids, tablets, capsules, topical creams and ointments to be used in research studies.” GMP qualification also opens up a whole new avenue of economic possibilities for Campbell. In addition to being an education resource for students, CUPSI will build a client base with revenue income to support From left, Drs. Mali Gupta and William Stagner work with students in the Good Manufacturing Practice area of Campbell University Pharmaceutical Science Institute. Barge enjoyed a rich professional life. His performance as dean was especially marked by his vast experience and knowledge. To honor Barge’s distinguished contribution to the College of Arts and Sciences, the Campbell University Honors program, which he created, established the Walter S. Barge Honors Colloquium student lecture series. The Colloquium featured student presentations on research projects initiated during the fall semester. The presentations were interdisciplinary and included analysis and exploration of a variety of subject matter—from the character of Faith Lehane in the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”—to the mortality and vaccination rates in Camaroon and Nigeria. Each honor student received guidance and instruction on his or her project from a faculty mentor. Dr. Barge himself served as a mentor to student Luke Morales’ “Video Project: Indonesia.” included service in Vietnam, nine years as a professor in undergraduate level history at the U.S. Military Academy and service as the executive officer of a nuclear missile site in the Seattle Air Defense sector. Upon his retirement from the military, Barge served as founding headmaster of a private Christian school. He became dean of Campbell’s College of Arts and Sciences in 1984 and retired from that position in 2001. A native of Durham, North Carolina, Barge was the recipient of two Bronze Stars, the Vietnamese Police Medal of Honor and the Legion of Merit. He was also a member of the honor societies Phi Alpha Theta, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Gamma Mu. Dr. Walter Barge passed away June 7, 2009. “The Colloquium is academically valuable from several perspectives,” said foreign language professor Dr. Ann Ortiz, who coordinates the Honors program with Professor Bert Wallace of the Department of Theatre Arts. “It is interdisciplinary, and it also provides opportunities to integrate faith and learning and service learning, two of the prongs of Campbell’s mission statement.” The Colloquium received a very positive response from students, faculty and the community, Ortiz added. “Everyone is pleased with the depth and breadth of its content as well as its homage to Dr. Barge, who is widely admired and respected.” Dr. Walter S. Barge graduated magna cum laude from Wake Forest University in 1957. He went on to obtain a Master of Arts in European history from Columbia University in New York and received a Ph.D. in European history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Barge retired from the U.S. Army in 1979 after 21 years of active service, which Left: Kimberly McBrayer presented at the Barge Colloquium. Born in 1894 in Corydon, Kentucky, Powell was stricken in childhood with a spinal ailment, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. She battled illnesses but received her degree. For the next 43 years, the “classroom miracle worker,” as she was dubbed by former students, remained an energetic force at Campbell, dedicated to her students and the campus community, until her retirement in 1967. Dr. Gina Peterman Ora Carr Cansler Chair of English In 1973, Ora Carr Cansler, a former English instructor at Campbell Junior College, donated to Campbell College the funds needed for the establishment of the Ora Carr Cansler Professorship of English. Cansler joined the Campbell faculty in 1946, after 20 years as a teacher in the Durham Public School system. At one time dean of women, she taught Latin and Bible and finished her career in the dual role of teacher of English in Campbell’s Academy division and adviser to the Baptist Student Union. For several years, she also planned the daily chapel programs. As an instructor, he has helped students in the conduct stronger theological research, thus strengthening the teaching of the entire Divinity School faculty.” A summa cum laude graduate of Samford University, Hogan holds a Master of Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School (magna cum laude) and a Ph.D. in New Testament from Baylor University. He is considered a respected New Testament scholar and teacher. 42 Deans’ Awards Dean’s Excellence In Teaching Award School of Education Dr. Janet Powell Dr. Janet Powell, of the School of Education, is a 2009 recipient of the Campbell University Dean’s Excellence in Teaching award. Her positive outlook has led to creative changes that will take Campbell’s education programs into the 21st century.” Powell holds a Bachelor of Science degree from William Jewell College, a master’s in education from the University of Texas at El Paso and a Ph.D. from Kansas State University. She was named Omicron Delta Kappa Professor of the Year in 1996. 44 Deans’ Awards Dean’s Excellence In Research Award Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law Professor William Woodruff Professor William “Woody” Woodruff, of Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, is the recipient of a 2009 Dean’s Excellence in Teaching award. Woodruff’s law career officially began when, as an army field artillery officer, he was selected by the Judge Advocate General to attend law school at the Army’s expense. He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law and served as an Army Judge Advocate. After reaching the rank of colonel, Woodruff retired from the Army in 1992 and became a faculty member of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. “In one sense, Woody has always been a teacher,” said Melissa Essary, dean of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. “As a combat arms officer, he taught his soldiers the tactics, skills and techniques necessary to survive on the battlefield and successfully accomplish their mission. As an Army lawyer, he mentored young attorneys in their roles as soldier-lawyers and taught graduate level legal education courses to military attorneys as a member of the faculty of the Judge Advocate General’s School and the Department of Justice.” Woodruff, who teaches trial advocacy at Campbell, spends extracurricular hours with trial teams engaged in competition. His work with the law faculty of Wismar University in Germany to develop clinical education courses in the primarily lecture- dominated German law curriculum led to two recent articles, one in the English language version of the “German Law Journal” and another in the leading German language legal periodical, “Juristen Zeitung.” Deans’ Awards 45 Dean’s Excellence In Teaching Award Lundy-Fetterman School of Business Dr. Mark Steckbeck Dr. Mark Steckbeck of the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business, is the recipient of Campbell University’s 2009 Dean’s Excellence in Teaching award.
