Chronicle of Scholarly Activity 2011
Campbell Accolades - 1
In 1926, Buies Creek Academy became
Campbell Junior College. Responding
to the needs and demands of a growing
student population, Campbell Junior
College became Campbell College
in 1961. In 1979, Campbell College
became Campbell University and has
since developed into a major regional
educational institution enrolling over
6,500 students both within the United
Sates and around the world.
125 years
of Excellence
On January 5, 1887, Campbell
University’s journey began. On
that cold, blustery winter day, the
University’s founder, Dr. James
Archibald Campbell, could not
have fully comprehended the
significance of the enterprise
he was launching. However,
Dr. Campbell was fully
persuaded that his vision and
the establishment of Buies Creek
Academy were “of God.” The
passage of time has affirmed
Dr. Campbell’s conviction.
The Civil War’s destruction
across North Carolina was severe.
Once considered one of the most
2 - Chronicle of Scholarly Activity 2011
progressive states in education, in the
aftermath of the war North Carolina’s
3,000 schools lay prostrate like its
businesses and farmland. In this
educational vacuum, Buies Creek
Academy opened its doors with an
enrollment of sixteen students. The
educational needs of the region were
so great and the school’s reputation
so positive that by the end of the first
term enrollment grew to 92 students.
During the early years of Campbell
University’s history, the educational
demands were so great and the
student population was growing so
quickly, it was only natural for the
Academy to seek junior college status.
Established as a liberal arts college,
the academic program of Campbell
University was greatly expanded in 1976
when the Board of Trustees authorized
the establishment of graduate programs
in education and business and the
awarding of the Master of Education
and Master of Business Administration
degrees. At that juncture the Board of
Trustees also approved the Juris Doctor
degree and the establishment of the
School of Law, the charter class of which
was to graduate in 1979. The Doctor of
Pharmacy degree was approved in 1985
with the establishment of the School of
Pharmacy. The University’s sixth, and
newest, school, the Divinity School, was
established in 1995.
Campbell University is committed to
its purpose of presenting Christian
principles to students and fostering their
application to daily life.The university
sees the human vocation as living by
faith under grace, with no conflict
between the life of faith and the life of
inquiry.
Throughout its 125-year history,
the university has been led by four
presidents: James A. Campbell, Leslie H.
Campbell, Norman Adrian Wiggins and
the current president, Jerry M. Wallace.

President’s Message
For 125 years, Campbell University
has been an institution committed
to excellence in teaching through
intellectual inquiry. The 2011 edition
of Accolades celebrates the scholarly
activities of our distinguished faculty.
The University is justifiably proud
of the scholarly attainments of its
faculty. But the particular basis of
that pride is the knowledge that
faculty scholarship at Campbell is in
the service of student learning. The
efforts that are reflected through the
specific entries of this chronicle suggest a vitality
that yields tremendous dividends for the learning
of students. It is that on-going energy in the
wedding of careful scholarship and its appropriate
dissemination that enriches the academic enterprise
so wonderfully.

For the love
of research
When asked what a person likes about
Campbell University a variety of answers
will ensue. But one is always said more than
others-- “it feels like a family.” Even though
Dr. Tina Tseng has only been teaching at the
university for two years, she already says it feels
like a family to her. But her reason might be a
little different then most.
University, a Master of Science in Public
Health at Emory and a PhD in integrated
biomedical science at Ohio State University
where she received significant grant funding
from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
to conduct original and ground-breaking
research on the effects of methamphetamines
on the brain.
Tseng works in the College of Pharmacy
and Health Sciences in the Clinical Research
Department. She received
her undergraduate
degree from Johns
Hopkins
But before she was able to accomplish this,
she and her family had to overcome some
significant obstacles. About a year after Tseng
was born in 1978, her family escaped from
Vietnam to Malaysia, becoming refugees,
eventually coming to the United States.
“My father's family had political ties to the
South Vietnamese government (actually my
grandfather was a judge for the South
Vietnamese government)- so
it became a very
6 - Chronicle of Scholarly Activity 2011
difficult situation for his family once the North
Vietnamese or communists took over the
country,” said Tseng. “They actually sent my
grandfather to a re-education camp where he
was killed so this is the main reason my dad
decided to escape Vietnam.”
While the family was in Malaysia, they were
sponsored by a Baptist Church in America
within the first six months of being in Malaysia.
“I have always been very grateful to the church
for all that they did for us- including helping us
find a place to live, giving us clothes and they
actually gave me toys too.,” she said. “They also
helped my father take English classes which was
key for him to able to return to medicine and
become a psychiatrist in the US.”
While growing up Tseng wanted to be a
therapist, but in college she became involved
in scientific research and there was no
turning back.
“I like the fact that you are the first one to
find something out,” she said. “The result is
uncharted territory. You aren’t just memorizing
information you are reading, but actually
discovering something.”
After she completed her PhD,
she moved to Chapel Hill
with her husband, Dr. Ray
Tseng, and she worked
for NC State and PPD as
a Clinical Research Study
Coordinator before joining
Campbell in the Department
of Clinical Research. Her
current research interests
include epidemiological and
pharmaco-epidemiological
studies that focus on
psychiatric disorders and the
medications used to treat
those disorders.
She teaches
epidemiology, advanced data
management and advises masters
students’ research projects. She is
assigned one to three students. She
tries to come up with research
projects that are both exciting and
available to the students.
Over the last two academic
years Dr. Tseng and her Masters
Research students have presented
at several national meetings where
their research has been very well
received by pharmacists and
public health specialists.
“This is a great career
development for them,” said
Tseng. “The students are able
to share what they learned
with professionals who really want to know
this information.”
“Dr. Tseng is passionate about her research
interests and is an excellent research adviser
- producing more accepted posters, abstracts
and publications with her student groups than
any other faculty member in the department,”
said Dr. Wes Rich, asst. professor of Clinical
Research, Director of Assessment.
Dr. Tseng keeps in touch with former
students, as well. They like to call her when
they accomplish a major milestone. Dr. Tseng
loves the energy students possess.
“I never go to work and have the same day
twice,” she said. “I feel very fortunate to teach
at Campbell because I feel like I am part of
that "family" again that helped us so much
when we first came to America,” said Tseng.
“I don't know how but, it just feels right to be
able to be a part of this community and try to
give back to it.”
- Shannon Ryals, Assistant Director
of Publications.

Dr. Andrew
Wakefield
You can call him a Renaissance man- a
man who can be described with a variety
of expertise and interests. Dr. Andrew
Wakefield is involved in researching the
Bible, starting a local church, dabbling
in woodworking and gardening and even
baking homemade bread. His latest endeavor
is becoming the new dean of Campbell’s
Divinity School. His duties began on July
1, 2010.
“This is a huge blessing,”
he said. “I entered into this
situation which already had
such a good foundation. The
Divinity School is strong
and has been blessed with superb
leadership and a wonderful staff, who
aren’t just capable, but committed.”
With inspirational leadership, exceptional
students and support from the administration,
the Divinity school is currently celebrating its
15th year. Dr. Wakefield looks forward to the
school doing even more to be good stewards of
what God is already doing through the school.
This might include partnerships with other
schools in the University to create additional
dual degrees or offering even more programs.
“My vision is for the school to continue
to extend its influence further into the
community,” he said. “We are already a place
where students come from many different
denominational backgrounds to receive
excellent training in ministry. I want us
to reach out even further to build stronger
relationships, both with Baptists and with
other denominations. I also want us to be
8 - Chronicle of Scholarly Activity 2011
seen as a resource for the rest of the campus.”
Those relationships are important to Wakefield.
That is why he chose to continue to teach at
least one class a semester. He couldn’t pick just
one class as his favorite class to teach, but did
say he particularly enjoys basic introductory
classes like New Testament I and II and Greek.
“It’s exciting to see students digging into
Scripture,” he said. “They not only discover
what the text says, but even more how we live
what we have read. It’s also wonderful to share
insight on what we find and to have ‘a ha’
moments. Sometimes I hear something I have
never heard before which is very powerful.”
Wakefield was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., but
spent his childhood in Southeast Asia as the son
of missionary parents. Those early years indelibly
imprinted on him a commitment to church,
missions and ministry. Most recently he has been
serving as coordinator for Baptist Fellowship of
Angier, a mission church focused on ministry
with children and families from economically
depressed areas. This also allows him to stay
connected with undergraduate and Divinity
students who are involved with this project.
“This is right in our own backyard,” said
Wakefield. “The college students are plugged
in and are excited to be part of a hands-on
ministry. They are not just talking about
doing ministry, or being told they should do
ministry; they are doing ministry now.”
Wakefield believes strongly in being part of
real world experiences so that when he teaches
a particular subject in the classroom he can
back it up with examples. He has served in
numerous churches which allow his teaching
to be grounded by example. He also involves
himself in research projects.
His dissertation, “Where to Live: The
Hermeneutical Significance of Paul’s Citations
of Scripture in Galatians 3:10-14,” was
published by Brill Academic Publishers and the
Society of Biblical Literature. More
recently, in addition to numerous
scholarly articles, he has produced
a finished manuscript for the
teaching of New Testament
Greek, and is well along the way
on a commentary on Galatians.
Wakefield acknowledged the
tremendous opportunity before
him in leading the Divinity
School. He stated, “I am
deeply humbled to have been
selected as dean. Under Dr.
Cogdill’s leadership, this
school has achieved the
highest levels of excellence; I
look forward to maintaining the proven values
that have led to its success. At the same time, I
look forward to the challenges that lie ahead as
we respond to the rapidly changing landscape
of the church and of theological education.
My desire is that we will always continue
growing and stretching, so that Campbell
University Divinity School students will
always be at the forefront of leading the
church to meet the challenges of a postmodern world.”
Dr. Wakefield is a 1983 summa cum laude
graduate of Wake Forest University. He went
on to earn the Master of Divinity degree
from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
in Louisville, Kentucky, then earned his
Ph.D. in New Testament from Duke
University in 2000. Wakefield has served
on the faculty of the Divinity School since
1997, and currently holds the Lewis Edward
and Martha Barnes Tyner Chair of Bible. He
and his wife, Olivia, reside in Lillington with
their two daughters, Natalie and Allison.
They are members of Baptist Fellowship of
Angier.

of Publications.

Dr. Meredith T. Williams
Dr. Tony Cartledge
Assistant Professor of Mathematics,
Chair, Department of Math/ITS
Associate Professor of Old Testament
Dr. Meredith Williams, of Lillington, N.C., earned an undergraduate
degree from Furman University, a Master of Science in mathematical
sciences from Clemson University and a Ph.D. in statistics from the
University of South Carolina. Williams joined the Campbell faculty in
2005.
“No matter how you count the pieces, it all adds up—Meredith is a hugely
popular and effective teacher of mathematics,” said Dr. Mark Hammond,
dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Whether it’s a sizable statistics
class, or a one-on-one independent study in calculus, she connects with
her pupils in a manner that results in student success.”
Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award
College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences
Dr. Michael L. Adams
Director of Science Education Outreach,
Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Dr. Michael Adams Adams joined Campbell University in 2005 as
assistant professor of Medicinal Chemistry in the Pharmaceutical Sciences
Department. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Campbell
in 1996 and his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of
Washington School of Pharmacy in Seattle Washington. Adams went
on to pursue a post doctoral fellowship at the National Heart, Lung and
Blood Institute in molecular immunology.
“This educational background and research experience gave Dr. Adams a
special perspective and ability to excel in teaching Medicinal Chemistry
at Campbell,” said Dr. Ronald Maddox, dean of the College of Pharmacy
& Health Sciences. “He presents challenging material while instilling a strong work ethic, honesty and
integrity in his students.”
In addition to teaching pharmacology and medicinal chemistry, Adams also teaches Substance Abuse,
General Toxicology, Essentials of Toxicology and Introduction to Pharmacology.
A Divinity School faculty member since 2007, Cartledge is the past
editor of the Biblical Recorder, a state-wide publication of the Baptist
State Convention of North Carolina. He is the author of many books and
numerous articles, including a two-volume commentary on the Gospels
of Samuel, Books I and II. He has also been instrumental in revitalizing
Campbell’s Bible Lands Study tours to Israel for which he serves as a lead
guide and teacher.
“Dr. Cartledge has excelled in his work as a scholar in Old Testament
studies at the Divinity School and as a valuable member of the Divinity
School faculty,” said Dr. Andrew Wakefield, dean of the Campbell
Divinity School. “His in-depth knowledge of the Old Testament, his years of preaching in the local
church, and his skill in writing have greatly enhanced the learning opportunities for our students.”
Cartledge is a 1973 graduate of the University of Georgia and holds a Master of Divinity with languages
from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in Old Testament from Duke University.
He was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Theology from Campbell University in 2005. Cartledge
frequently serves the local church in the areas of interim pastor and pulpit supply speaker.

Mr. Patrick Hetrick
Law Professor
A law professor for over four decades, Pat Hetrick began his teaching
career at Marquette University where he served as law professor and
associate university legal counsel. He joined the Campbell law faculty in
1978, two years after the school was founded and served as dean of the law
school from 1987-1998.
“In all, Hetrick has taught over 4,000 law graduates, including a vast
majority of Campbell lawyers,” said Melissa Essary, current dean of the
Campbell Law School. “His zany and unorthodox teaching methods,
including using a platoon of hand puppets, wearing costumes to
class and weaving an offbeat sense of humor into daily lessons have
definitely resulted in student success. He is constantly innovating and emphasizing the role and serious
responsibility of the student as a self-motivated expert learner and future member of the bar.”
Hetrick pioneered as one of the first professors to teach a clinical course, Fair Employment Law. He
has taught labor and education and advanced real property, areas in which he is considered a leading
expert. Hetrick also developed and teaches the first completely online course at the law school, a series of
lectures and problems in advanced real property law.

Dr. Jutta Street
Associate Professor of Psychology
“A native of Germany, Street understands the difficulties students face
as they move away from home and experience new adventures,” said
Dr. Karen Nery, dean of the School of Education. “Her expectations
for students are high. She isn’t willing to accept just passable work, but
demands that students always do their best.”
Street, who resides in Raleigh, N.C., doesn’t just connect with students
in the classroom, Nery said. She also supports them in extracurricular
activities including the Psychology Club and the psychology honor society
Psi Chi. Each year, Street takes students to regional, state and national
conferences to present their own research and compete in academic
