"Humanism and Politics in Machiavelli's
Florence"
I will discuss the humanist view of morality and public life as a context for understanding
Machiavelli's
withering critique of official morality.
I will begin with Francesco Petrarca and
the ideas of humanistic
liberal education and discuss briefly the Florentine
civic humanists and
then offer some suggestions
for how we can best understand
Machiavelli.

in Renaissance
Italy
Using key example of portraiture
in bronze, marble and paint, we will consider the birth of the
portrait in the Renaissance,
concentrating
on the period from ca. 1420-1520.
Besides discussing
style (or appearance),
these portraits will also be the means by which we can address both the
public and private life of the individual
in the Renaissance.
