Assets for Independence (AFI) is a Federal program through the United States Department of Health and Human Services that provides funds for Individual Development Account (IDA) Projects. Participants are required to save on a regular basis and make deposits from earned income. What are IDA’s? An Individual Development Account, or IDA, is a special matched savings account for people with low-to-moderate incomes. These accounts are designed to help individuals and families establish a pattern of regular saving and ultimately purchase an asset. Assets provide financial security for the future. For every $1 saved in the IDA account , we match $3 towards your asset purchase. What Programs are Offered? Homeownership: For those who have never owned a home or have not owned a home in 3 years. We offer evening and weekend classes for FREE!! We offer FREE credit counseling and homeownership counseling. Eligible clients can receive up to $3,000 in down-payment assistance through the homeownership IDA. Education: For those who are preparing to enter a college, university, technical or vocational school we have assistance available. Participants or their parents can save $250 to $1,000 and receive funds for tuition, books, supplies, fees, etc. paid to the educational institution through the education IDA. High school juniors, seniors, GED and non-traditional students can apply. Call for more details. What Training is Required? Homeownership: 8 hours of financial education 8 hours of homeownership class training One-on-one credit counseling Ongoing homeownership education(6 hours) Education: 8 hours of financial education 10 hours of PREP training Budget & credit counseling Both programs require participants to be enrolled for a minimum of 6 months to receive matching funds Which Areas Are Included? 19 Parishes in N. Louisiana*: Caddo, Bossier, Desoto, Red River, Bienville, Webster, Claiborne, Lincoln, Union, Jackson, Morehouse, Ouachita, Caldwell, Richland, West Carroll, Franklin, East Carroll, Madison, and Tensas *Some restrictions may apply
