PrincipalInvestigatorsareresponsibleforthescientiϐicandtechnicalaspectsofagrantawardand
mustensurecompliancewithPublicHealthService(PHS)PolicyonHumaneCareandUseof
LaboratoryAnimals(Policy)whenusinglivevertebrateanimals.PHSPolicyincorporatesthe U.S.
GovernmentPrinciplesfortheUtilizationandCareofVertebrateAnimalsUsedinTesting,Research,
andTraining,theGuidefortheCareandUseofLaboratoryAnimals,andtheAmericanVeterinary
MedicalAssociation(AVMA)GuidelinesfortheEuthanasiaofAnimals.Vertebrate animalsinclude
traditionallaboratoryanimals,farmanimals,wildlife,andaquaticanimals.Animaluseencompasses
research,teaching,ortesting.Generationofcustomantibodies isconsideredanactivityinvolving
vertebrate animals.

Investigatorsareaccountablefortheprotectionofthe

protocolform.Mostanimal‐useprotocolsrequirea
descriptionofthefollowing elements:
