2) School-Wide Environmental Behavior Changes The school sprinkler systems are set on timers and are manually turned during periods of rainy weather. All staff are required to immediately report leaky faucets to minimize water waste. Thus expedient repairs can be made . The school grows native plants for landscaping from seed in the school’s greenhouse. The building services manager turns off the boilers and HVAC systems when outside air temperature is approximately 60 ᵒF to save energy. The school has requested that the air handler system be overhauled to ensure correct air flow production and reduce energy consumption. The school has adopted an electronic weekly bulletin and electronic staff memos. Staff has been instructed to print double-sided copies when possible. Teachers have students turn in large assignments electronically to the school’s hand-in folder and into Turnitin.com to limit the use of paper. Teachers upload assignments and reference materials to Edline instead of providing printed handouts whenever possible. All computer labs and some classrooms have torch lamps to limit the use of overhead lighting. The school is in the process of purchasing task lamps for classrooms. The school participates in the county wide SERT shut down initiative on long weekends and holidays to conserve energy when the classrooms are not being used. The school principal shares SERT team contributions and efforts during the school-wide weekly recognition. Science staff share SERT team contributions at monthly department meetings. The school uses its website and social media (Twitter) to promote Earth Day and Earth Hour. The school sends out SERT tip emails to encourage energy awareness and recycling. The school staff removed all old heat producing devices from classrooms and any replacements use green technology and energy star certification. Building services shuts down lights in classrooms and hallways after hours and also checks for any open windows. The school purchased aluminum barriers and recycling advertising was developed to place on the barriers for athletic events in the NWHS stadium. This encourages and reminds parents, students and visitors to recycle. The school sponsors a prom dress donation every year in which unwanted prom dresses are donated to students to use in order to prevent wasteful purchasing and disposal.
