February is Black History Month
+
by Asha Burtin
As you may already know, Black
History Month is now in full swing. It
has been a national celebration since
1976. One of the many people who
caused this month is Rosa Parks. She
was an African American woman
who refused to give up her seat to a
white person on the bus, even
though that was the law in
Montgomery, Alabama in 1955.
Segregation was wrong to her and
she decided to protest it. After that
there was a bus boycott so African
Americans would not ride the buses
in Montgomery. They walked. Many
people thought segregation was
wrong. Thanks to their protests
during the Civil Rights Movement
there is no longer segregation in the
United States.
What do you think caused us to have
Black History Month? A lot of people
think it was just a few people like
Martin Luther King and Malcolm X
and Rosa Parks but it was way more
people than that. Think about
Harriet Tubman and Frederick
Douglass and Jackie Robinson,
Arthur Ashe and Oprah Winfrey and
Barak Obama, and so many other
people. Having the month to
celebrate the achievements of
African Americans started as “Black
History Week,” because of a
historian named Carter G. Woodson
in 1926. He wanted the celebration
to be at the time of the birthdays of
Abraham Lincoln and Frederick
Douglass.
I encourage you to find out more
about African Americans who
contributed to our country and
helped to make a Black History
Month. I think it is cool to dig deeper
and learn more and that is what I
plan to do. You can find out more by

Step Team
by Shannon Thorne
Step Team is fun! We learn a new step to make
the step sound good to rock the crowd. There
are fifteen girls on the team. We are in all
three grades. On December 17, 2013 we had
our first performance at the girls’ basketball
game and everyone love it. We were all very
nervous at the beginning. We did a lot of
moves where we had to move exactly in a
certain direction. And at the end we all
shouted Loiederman Step Team altogether.
And then we walked out the door cheering.
Then we was so happy.

The Deets on Ms. P
By Asha Burtin
I interviewed Ms. Paley, the new theatre teacher here at Loiederman. The answers she gave me
were pretty interesting if you ask me.
QUESTIONS:
WHEN DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN THEATRE?
Answer: When Ms.Paley was three years old her parents took her to see Annie, a famous play.
From then on she said she would walk around the house singing the song “Tomorrow” from the
play very loudly.
WHO INSPIRED YOU TO DO THEATRE?
Answer: Ms. Paley said that her high school theatre teacher,
Mr. Schwartzman inspired her to do theatre. He told her though that she would have to give up a
lot like family and friends in order to become an actress, but Ms. Paley didn’t want to do that so as
you can see that she became a theatre teacher.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE HERE AT LOIEDERMAN SO FAR AS
A THEATRE TEACHER?
Answer: Ms. Paley said that her favorite experiences have been when her entire cast and crew
sang her happy birthday at the last showing of the play on Saturday, 11/16/13. She also said that
her favorite experience has been when her entire cast and crew gave her
a group hug on Sunday, 11/17/13.

Dear Nini
Dear Nini,
LMS Times Advice Column
I’ve been having trouble in school. The girls here hate
me. I also don’t have the best grades.
-A friend in need
Dear Nini,
I do an after school activity that I’ve done for a few
years and I love it. Now my younger brother (1 year
younger) is joining, and I’m worried that he will
embarrass me.
What should I do?
-Tomkins
Dear Tomkins,
If you have groups at your after school club, since
he is younger he might not be in your group. Your
brother will also probably make friends and not
hang around you. I wouldn’t worry he might bother
you from time to time but not a lot. Stick to having
fun and loving it.
-Nini
Dear Nini,
Who is Nini?
Reby
Dear Reby,
That is something I will never tell.
But it is a code name.
-
Dear A friend in Need,
There has to be a reason these girls bother you.
Hold your head high, be positive and friendly to
everyone else, try responding with things like
“Grow up.” Make sure you walk with confidence or
else you’re an easy target. For your grades, walk
into school with a positive attitude. It also helps to
take notes, and in things like math it helps to write
down steps. Also talk to your teachers and get
some extra help; don’t think its geeky. School sets
up the rest of your life so at least try.

WHY WE SHOULDN’T COMPARE OURSELVES
By Melody Vitek
I’m sure at one point
or another you’ve
compared yourself to
someone on TV, or
online, or on a
magazine, or even in
just some music video.
At the time you
probably wanted to
know, and or be like
them, you must have
thought that they had
the best lives in the
world but you’d be
surprised
how
wonderful you and
your life really are if
you gave it another
look. One example of
something
you
shouldn’t
compare
yourself to is models in
a
magazine. The
reason is that their
lives
aren’t
as
glamorous as they
appear. If you want to
learn the truth then
you better read on,
but I must warn you
the facts you’re about
to learn are very
shocking. First is
money. Most models
can’t afford a mansion
or a speed boat; some
can barely afford an
apartment. Second is
health. They have a
lot of problems with
their health due to
lack of food and sleep.
Yup, some of their
ideas of a meal is
cigarettes and coffee.
Third, most magazines
make them flaunt
their bodies to total
strangers. Last but not
least a lot of the
perfect faces you see
aren’t even real. It’s
just a lot of makeup,
camera tricks and
computer
retouch.
Pretty freaky huh? Bet
you never knew all of
those facts before I
wrote this. So next
time you think all of
these TV stars have
such amazing lives,
think about what goes
on behind the camera.
That’s all for
now, make sure to
tune in next time for
some more inside
information with your
friend Melody Vitek.
