THE CAMPBELL PROGRAM
THE CAMPBELL STUDENT
Campbell’s English program is very traditional with its historical
basis. It includes a two-year rotation of classes that ensures students
will be well-grounded in both British and American literature. At the
same time, the department is flexible and innovative. We often run
seminars on varying topics; if you have a specific interest, professors
are willing to create independent studies that challenge and excite
you.
English is a rigorous liberal arts major. It requires that you have a
passion to read and think. English students are thoughtful, bright and
independent-minded; they also garner much more than their share of
academic honors.
There are three concentrations available in the English program, the
first of which is a straight English degree. The second degree track is
English w/ Teacher Licensure; this option allows you to immediately
start teaching at the high school level upon graduation. The third
degree is English/Pre-Law; this concentration focuses heavily on
writing–an essential skill for Law School.
THE CAMPBELL APPROACH
One of the key strengths of being an English major is that classes
typically average eight to ten students. Within the small classroom
settings of the English department, students are able to receive the
hands-on education they need to succeed. Our faculty’s goal is to
graduate individuals with strong, flexible skills, a wide range of ideas,
a solid sense of themselves and a good moral character.
THE CAMPBELL FACULTY
In a world in which employers worry that graduates will not (or cannot)
think, this major requires that you see the importance of ideas to society
and your own life. Our curriculum insists that you make judgments,
explore those judgments, are able to articulate them and convince others
of your reasoning through this articulation.
To accomplish these ends, we have a variety of required and elective
courses designed to give you the breadth and depth you need. We also
offer a number of profession-related opportunities that contribute to
several aspects of achievement. For example, the Mabel Powell English
Club is far more than a social club; it provides another meeting-ground
for students and professors to discuss their ideas and interests in an
informal setting.
We also support The Lyricist magazine (our student-run creative writing
publication), the Byrd Creative Writing Award, Sigma Tau Delta
(English Honor Society) and much more.
literature and writing as ends in themselves, to gaining solid preprofessional preparation.
Our teachers come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have
an equally diverse array of interests. The professors all consider
themselves generalists, though each has a specific area in which he
or she specializes.
All department members teach freshmen and sophomore courses and
you will never have teaching assistants conducting a class. Moreover,
faculty members pride themselves on how much time they spend out
of class with students.
