AP ART An informational meeting for parents of all AP art students The Whitman HS Art Department is proud to announce our 12th Annual Art School Forum. This college visitation program is designed to provide Walt Whitman students and parents the opportunity to meet with representatives from schools offering specialized art programs in the visual arts. Representatives will review portfolios and explain the application process. Our Art School Forum continues to grow. Last year, approximately, 30+ colleges and universities participated. If your son or daughter is interested in a particular school, please have them ask their art teacher to send the school an invitation. New in Ceramics: Glass Fusing Thanks to a grant from Whitman’s Education Foundation, Ceramics & Sculpture II, III, and Adv. will be adding a glass fusing unit to its course of instruction. Fusible glass, or ‘warm glass’, is the art of joining and shaping colored glass into decorative and functional works of art. Students will be introduced to many of the materials, tools, and supplies needed to learn the basic methods of fusing. The scope of the projects will vary as we develop our skills. FOUR YEARS OF ART? Students at Whitman can take art all 4 years and meet graduation requirements. Many students complete the majority of required credits by end of junior year and often have scheduling holes in senior year. It’s easy to keep art courses straight through HS by spreading electives out over all 8 semesters. Advanced placement (AP) courses are available in Studio Art, isCeramics not &what you see, and but what you Sculpture, Photography Commercial Art in senior year. Colleges like to admit creative innovative thinkers who have multiple talents and diverse perspectives in addition to good grades. We advise students to upload digital photos of their work to supplement their applications. According to College Board data “The study of art develops visual literacy and reinforces historical, scientific, mathematic, and literary concepts. Students who received can 4 or more years of arts instruction scored an average of 57 points higher on the verbal section of the SAT test and 43 points higher on the math portion.”
